Canon Patent - EF-S 55-200mm f/4-6.3 IS STM Lens

The Japanese photography blog Egami has uncovered another new Canon patent for the EF-S 55-200mm f/4-6.3 STM lens. Although Image Stabilization was not mentioned, I am certain it is in the patent and may have been overlooked. The STM line of lens are very flexible and are great for taking still photos as well as videos.

It is important to note not all patents make it to the market place but there will be more EF, EF-S and EF-M lenses announcement in 2016.

More Canon EF Lenses Coming In 2016

Canon recently announced the long awaited EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. The lens has just started shipping and you can see sample images by clicking on the link above. But there will be more announcements to come in the new few quarters, leading all the way through 2016.

One of my favorite wide zooms is the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II and it will be in line for an upgrade in 2016. Canon is also working on the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS and we may eventually see this glass come on the market in a year or two. Other non 'L' lenses will include EF-S and EF-M as alluded by Masaya Maeda of Canon during a recent interview at the Canon EXPO 2015 in New York City.

Canon has now perfected the Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics technology. This new optical element will find its way into many of the upcoming lens and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III will be a prime candidate. In addition, the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS III lens is expected to be announced in the near future as well, together with some specialty lenses. The one lens I am most eager to get my hands on is the EF 600mm f/4 DO BR. It will be another great wildlife photography lens in my equipment bag.

Canon will have a busy schedule in the next 6 months or so. The EOS-1D X II and EOS-5D Mk IV are expected to be announced. Keep checking back for the latest news and development.

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II and EF-M 15-45mm IS STM Coming

Canon is expected to announce the Rebel SL2 camera and two lenses on August 14, 2015. Canon is also expected to announce the EOS-5D Mk IV and EOS-1D X Mk II cameras later this year or early 2016, but most probably after Nikon announces their D5 camera first.

The EF-35mm f/1.4L II seems to be the most likely candidate with a possible list price of $1,699. The other lens may be the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. Keep checking back for the latest news and development.

Canon vs. Nikon Debate - Not Again

                                 * * *  Canon EOS-7D Mk II camera announced  * * *

To be honest, I have never heard of this presenter in the video before but once again the debate of Canon vs. Nikon brings people like him in front of cameras to pontificate and explain. I suspect we all know the reason why so many people like this discussion and rivalry to continue forever.

My own view is simple. There are many good equipment out there. Canon and Nikon are both fine companies, like General Motors and Ford. It is just a matter of choice and preference. No camera line from any company is consistently better than its rivals but particular models may.

I have been a wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for 25 years. Canon provides me with the broadest line of equipment to choose from and gives me very good customer service. I have little time for stats, charts, graphs and side by side comparisons. My field encounters and experience dictate my equipment needs and so far they are met so I stick with Canon. It is a very practical and logical decision for me. You can see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com and read my Canon equipment recommendation.

Canon EF-S 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM in development

Canon is rumored to be developing a replacement to the less than stellar EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. The new lens will have the same STM motor as the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and EF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM lenses. Anytime a lens has a ratio of more than 1:10 zoom, there will be a compromise between versatility and peak performance.  The EF 28-300mm L IS lens is a prime example. One either loves it for its great focal lengths or loathes it for its monstrous weight and less than ideal IQ.  The new EF-S 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens may be available some time in the middle of 2013.
