Adobe Lightroom CC, 6.7 and DNG Converter 9.7 Support Canon EOS-5D Mark IV

Canon EOS-5D Mark IV with EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens

Lightroom CC (2015.7) and Lightroom 6.7 are now available.  The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support and lens profile support, and to address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.

Please note that this version of Lightroom contains compatibility fixes for macOS 10.12 (Sierra) and also requires macOS 10.10 and greater. We recommend you update to Lightroom CC (2015.7) and Lightroom 6.7 prior to updating to macOS 10.12 (Sierra).

Publish to Adobe Stock Contributor Site

You can now submit images directly from Lightroom CC to the brand new Adobe Stock Contributor Site using the included Adobe Stock Publish Service.  By contributing to Adobe Stock, you have the opportunity to showcase your work to millions of customers directly inside Creative Cloud applications.

Updates to “All Synced Photos”

We’ve made it easier to access your Lightroom CC images on the go with Lightroom for mobile and Lightroom for web.

You can now drag images directly to the “All Synced Photographs” collection in the Catalog panel.  By doing so, the image syncs with the Creative Cloud, and ensures that you’ll be able to edit, organize, or share the photo on the go with Lightroom across your devices.

Smart Previews for Faster Performance

You’ve always been able to use Smart Previews in the Develop Module as a way to edit photos without having access to the original images on disk.  Astute customers reported faster performance in the Develop Module when using Smart Previews and keeping their original images disconnected from their computer.  Now, you can set a Preference in the Performance tab so that Lightroom will always use Smart Previews in the Develop Module, if they are available, even when the original files are also available.

To do so,
  • Choose Edit > Preferences.
  • In the Preferences dialog, select the Performance tab.
  • In the Develop section, select Use Smart Previews Instead Of Originals For Image Editing.
  • Click OK and then restart Lightroom.

New Camera Support in Lightroom CC (2015.7) / 6.7

  • Apple iPad Pro 9.7″ (wifi and cellular)
  • Apple iPhone 6s Plus
  • Apple iPhone 6s

  • Panasonic DMC-LX9 (DMC-LX10, DMC-LX15)

Installation Instructions

Please select Help > Updates to use the update mechanism in the Creative Cloud app.

This update contains the Adobe DNG Converter 9.7.

The Adobe DNG Converter is a free utility that enables you to easily convert camera-specific raw files from more than 600 cameras to the more universal DNG raw format.

Digital Negative was developed to address the lack of an open standard for the proprietary and unique raw files created by each digital camera. DNG allows photographers to archive their raw camera files in a single format for easy cataloging and access in the future. With the format specification freely available, any developer can build software that supports and takes advantage of DNG. For more information, visit the Digital Negative page.

Support for many new cameras has been added. Visit the Camera Raw page for a complete list of supported cameras, including the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS-5D Mark IV cameras.

Canon Registers EOS-5D Mark IV Camera With Indonesian Certification Authority

Canon EOS-5D Mark IV full frame camera

In May, I reported the EOS-5D Mark IV pre-production camera was out on field tests with photographers who have signed Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with Canon. The EOS-5D Mark IV is Canon's most anticipated camera after the EOS-1D X Mark II because it promises a continuation of the highly successful EOS-5D line into a new decade.

Digicame-Info reported Canon has registered a new camera with the Indonesian Certification Authority. My sources in Asia has confirmed Model name DS126601 is indeed the EOS-5D Mark IV.

Equipment : Digital camera
Model name : Canon DS126601
Manufacturing : Japan
Date : July 1, 2016

Canon will be announcing the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II lens with the new camera. This is my favorite Canon 'wide to short' zoom 'L' lens and it can really take advantage of an upgrade. Looks like Canon has decided to offer the new camera and lens as a kit. I have not decided whether to buy the EOS-5D Mark IV when it comes out. I view the new camera as a little brother to the EOS-1D X Mark II and a more agile cousin to the EOS-5Ds. However, I will definitely buy the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS Series II lens.

Below is the latest information I have on the new camera right now.  The EOS-5D Mark IV will most probably be announced in Q3, in time for the Photokina Show in Cologne, Germany on September 20. Keep checking back. I will be able to confirm more specs later . . . . .

  • New 26 to 28MP Sensor. Will be below 30MP.
  • DIGIC 7 Processor. Dual DIGIC 6 Processors also possible
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology
  • ISO 100 - 51200 with expanded capability to 204800
  • 61 point AF system (same as EOS-1D X Mark II)
  • Red AF points in AI Servo (same as EOS-1D X Mark II)
  • Burst rate of 8 to 10 fps. Most probably 9 fps
  • Comes with WiFi and GPS
  • Canon Log and Wide DR gamut
  • Equipped with SDXC UHS-II and CFast memory slots
  • Improved material and ergonomics. Slightly lighter
  • May come with tilting touchscreen LCD
  • 4K video, slightly exceeding EOS-1D X Mark II's capability
  • New Battery Grip - BG-E20
  • New Battery - LP-E20
  • EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II offered as a kit with camera
  • Announcement date - Q3 (August), 2016.
  • List price - around $3,500 in the U.S.

Live View Comparison - Hasselblad vs Phase One

Capture Integration did a quick side by side, Live View comparison between the Hasselblad and Phase One 50MP Digital Backs. From the video below, it appears Phase One has the advantage. Of particular interest is Phase One's superior refresh arte, dynamic range and contrast.

My readers know after much deliberation, I have finally replaced my venerable EOS-1Ds Mark III with the full frame, 61-point AF, 50 megapixel Canon EOS-5Ds camera. The 5Ds will be used primarily for nature and travel photography but also for wildlife when the animals don't move too much. The resolution of its impressive sensor,  the ability to crop the image to 1.3x and 1.6x right in the camera are great advantages for me when it comes to wildlife photography, offsetting its main disadvantage - the slow 5 fps burst rate. I will be taking this camera on many worldwide photo shoots in 2016 and writing a comprehensive review on it in the next few months. You can see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras

The Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are widely available now. DxOMark recently came out with their sensor score on the camera. I have written posts comparing them to the Nikon D810Sony a7R II and EOS-5D Mk III for those who are contemplating buying either camera or upgrading to one.

There is a highly-rated merchant on eBay selling the Canon EOS-5DsR camera for $2,924 including free shipping. The list price is $3,599. If you are interested in buying one, don't delay too much longer. Canon recently put out a list of recommended lens with this camera.

Sony a7R II vs Canon EOS-5DsR Camera Comparison

Sony a7R II vs Canon EOS-5DsR camera comparison
My readers know, I have been a Canon user for over 25 years. Through the decades, I have used almost all of Canon's cropped and full frame, film and digital cameras, plus the EF and EF-S lenses. You can see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

The recently released Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are descendants of the original EOS-5D, released in 2005. It was the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera and the official list price was roughly the same as the current list price of the EOS-5Ds. Considering inflation and the monumental advancement in technology packed into the new camera, I must say it is a very good deal, indeed.

The Sony a7R II camera was released in June 2015. The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to upgrade or keep their present Canon or Sony bodies.

EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR DSLR cameras :
  • 50.6 MP full frame sensor
  • Powered by dual DIGIC 6 processors
  • Optical low pass filter on EOS-5Ds. Self cancelling on EOS-5DsR
  • 1.3x (30.5MP) plus 1.6x (19.6MP) with 1:1 ratio crop mode
  • 3.2 inch, 1040K dot LCD screen.
  • Dual card slots, one CF, one SD
  • Burst rate 5 fps. Burst depth, up to 510 JPEG and 14 RAW files
  • ISO range from 100 - 6400, 50 - 12800 with expansion
  • 61-point High Density Reticular AF, 41 cross type points, 5 double cross type
  • 150,000 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, 252 zone
  • Custom Functions - 16, USB 3.0
  • Number of cross-points depends on the speed of the lens used.
  • 59 ms. shutter lag, 150,000 cycle shutter and .71x viewfinder.
  • DxOMark overall sensor score - 87
  • Low light ISO - 2381 ISO

Sony a7R II mirrorless camera :
  • 42.2MP BSI Full-frame CMOS sensor
  • ISO 50-102400 expanded
  • 5 axis built in IS
  • 399 Phase Detection AF system
  • Max 5 fps shooting
  • 3.0 inch 1229K dot LCD screen
  • Shoots video in 4K
  • Shutter rated at 500,000
  • Low light ISO - 3434 (no surprise here)
  • WiFi / NFC
  • 2.36m dot Electronic Viewfinder
  • Battery life 340 shots
  • SD card slot and Memory Stick
  • Mic and Headphone sockets

The first thing that stands out is the Canon EOS-5Ds is a 'bigger and heavier' camera. That in itself means little since both cameras can produce excellent photos that can be printed in very large size. If one needs to print super large sized photos, the EOS-5Ds has a slight edge.

The Sony a7R II does have the advantage over the Canon EOS-5Ds, with an expanded ISO of 102400 vs 6400. Both cameras shoot at a maximum of 5 fps and there are of course, differences with proprietary processors, video speed, AF system, etc. but suffice to say, they are differences without much distinction. The final stand out point is the Canon EOS-5Ds has better battery management capability and claims to shoot 700 vs Sony's 340 shots on a fully charged battery.

In conclusion, both cameras are great for full frame photography, capable of producing sharp, extremely huge prints. The Canon EOS-5Ds is a full frame DSLR while the Sony a7R II has a full frame mirrorless design. The Sony a7R II is superior to the older a7R in all aspects.

More importantly, to me, the difference between a DSLR and mirrorless camera's design is the real issue. The EOS-5Ds (in particular the EOS-1D X) feels like a real camera with excellent grip and ergonomics. It is designed as a more rugged body and goes with a full complement of EF lens, from 8mm to 1200mm. The Sony is designed as a 'lighter, compact all-in-one package' stuffed with 'fluffy' technology and works with a smaller complement of lens, although one can buy an adapter and use it with some Canon's EF lens.

For the photographer who prefers to travel light and take mostly landscape/nature/portrait/wedding photos and videos, the Sony a7II R is a good choice. As a wildlife photographer, neither the Canon EOS-5Ds nor the Sony a7R II camera is a good alternative for wildlife photography, in my opinion. I am waiting for the EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS-5D Mk IV to debut later this year or early next year for my next DSLR purchase.

Whether one wants to upgrade from their present camera depends entirely on whether one needs a camera capable of producing mega prints. For Canon users thinking of upgrading from the EOS-5D Mk III to the EOS-5Ds, read my comparison here. For a comparison between the Nikon D810 and the Canon EOS-5Ds, read this post.

Canon Demonstrates 250MP Sensor Turbulence Removal Feature

At the EXPO 2015 was in New York and Paris, Canon played a video demonstration of their 250MP sensor. They described it as 'Turbulence Removal', which helps reduce environmental fluctuations that can show up in telephoto images.

The experimental 250MP is still a work-in-progress for a few years to come. The EOS-5Ds and EOS-5Ds R will be Canon's highest megapixel camera for the foreseeable future.

Canon EOS-5Ds vs Nikon D810 Comparison

Canon EOS-5Ds vs Nikon D810 comparison

My readers know, I have been a Canon user for about 25 years. Through the decades, I have used almost all of Canon's cropped and full frame, film and digital cameras, plus the EF and EF-S lenses. You can see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

It was the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera and the official list price was roughly the same as the current list price of the EOS-5Ds. Considering inflation and the monumental advancement in technology packed into the new camera, I must say it is a very good deal, indeed.

The Nikon D810 camera was released in March 2015. Until the announcement of the Canon EOS-5Ds, this was the only mega pixel DSLR camera on the market.

The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of DSLR cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to upgrade or keep their present Canon or Nikon bodies.

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR 50MP full frame cameras

EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR full frame cameras :
  • 50.6 MP sensor powered by dual DIGIC 6 processors
  • Optical low pass filter on EOS-5Ds. Self cancelling on EOS-5DsR
  • 1.3x (30.5MP) plus 1.6x (19.6MP) with 1:1 ratio crop mode
  • 3.2 inch, 1040K dot LCD screen.
  • Dual card slots, one CF, one SD

  • 59 ms. shutter lag, 150,000 cycle shutter and .71x viewfinder.
  • DxOMark overall sensor score - 87
  • Low light ISO - 2381 ISO

Nikon D810 36MP full frame camera

Nikon D810 full frame camera :
  • 36.3MP Full-frame CMOS sensor (no AA filter)
  • ISO 64-12,800 (expands to ISO 32-51,200)
  • Electronic first-curtain shutter and redesigned mirror mechanism
  • New 'RAW Size S' 9MP Raw mode
  • Expeed 4 engine
  • Max 5 fps shooting in FX mode, 7 fps in DX (with battery grip + EN-EL18)
  • 3.2in 1,229k-dot RGBW LCD screen with customizable color
  • OLED viewfinder information display
  • Improved Scene Recognition System allows face detection in OVF mode
  • 'Split screen zoom' display in live view allows horizons/lines to be leveled precisely
  • 51-point AF system with new 'Group Area AF' mode (inherited from D4S)
  • New 'flat' Picture Control mode (intended to appeal to videographers)
  • Auto ISO available in manual exposure mode
  • Zebra strips for exposure checking in video mode
  • Uncompressed HDMI output with simultaneous recording to memory card
  • Built-in stereo microphone

The first thing that stands out in many people's mind is the Canon EOS-5Ds has a much higher pixel sensor. That in itself means little since both cameras can produce excellent photos that can be printed out in fairly large size. If one needs to print super large sized photos, then the EOS-5Ds has a slight edge.

The Nikon D810 does have the advantage over the Canon EOS-5Ds, with a native ISO of 12,800 vs 6,400. The EOS-5Ds edges out the D810 in terms of AF points, 61 vs 51. Both cameras shoot at a maximum of 5 fps and Canon maxes out at 14 RAW and 510 JPEG vs Nikon's 23 RAW and 100 JPEG.

Both cameras have cropped modes, in addition to the full frame capability. Canon's 1.3x and 1.6x vs Nikon's 1.2x and 1.5x

There are of course other differences with proprietary processors, video speed, etc. but suffice to say, they are differences without much distinction. The final stand out point is the Nikon D810 has better battery management capability and claims to shoot 1,200 vs Canon's 700 shots on a fully charged battery.

In conclusion, both cameras are great full frame DSLRs, capable of producing sharp, extremely huge prints but they are unsuitable for wildlife photography, in my opinion. Whether one wants to upgrade from their present camera depends entirely on whether one needs a camera capable of producing mega prints. Canon EOS-5DsR 50MP Camera In Africa

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR 50MP full frame cameras

The Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are available everywhere now. DxOMark recently came out with their sensor score on the camera and compared it to the Nikon D810 and Sony a7R.
I have compared the EOS-5D Mk III to the EOS-5Ds for those who are contemplating buying either camera or upgrading to one. The current 5D3 is an excellent camera and my pick as the best value in full frame photography.

I am not buying the new 5D. My attention is focused on later this year when Canon plans a second round of upgrade to their full frame camera lineup by announcing the EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS-5D Mk IV. Both cameras are expected to have new sensors and processors with unmatched dynamic range and high ISO performance. The EOS-1D X Mk II is expected to be announced first, perhaps in Q4 with an end of year to Q1 2016 delivery date.

The video below from Abraham Joffe was shot in Botswana. He uses his new camera for still wildlife shots but I feel the EOS-5D Mk III is sufficient for that purpose. My main camera for wildlife photography are the EOS-1D X and EOS-7D Mk II.

Canon EOS-5Ds vs EOS-5D Mk III Camera Comparison

My readers know, I have been a Canon user for about 25 years. Through the decades, I have used almost all of Canon's cropped and full frame, film and digital cameras, plus the EF and EF-S lenses. You can see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com

The recently released Canon EOS-5Ds and the EOS-5D Mk III are descendants of the original EOS-5D, released in 2005. It was the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera and the official list price was roughly the same as the current list price of the EOS-5Ds. Considering inflation and the monumental advancement in technology packed into the new camera, I must say it is a very good deal, indeed.

The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of Canon cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to buy or keep their present EOS-5D Mk III or upgrade to the new EOS-5Ds or EOS-5DsR.

EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR full frame cameras :

  • 50.6 MP sensor powered by dual DIGIC 6 processors
  • Optical low pass filter on EOS-5Ds. Self cancelling on EOS-5DsR
  • 1.3x (30.5MP) plus 1.6x (19.6MP) with 1:1 ratio crop mode
  • 3.2 inch, 1040K dot LCD screen.
  • Dual card slots, one CF, one SD
  • Burst rate 5 fps. Burst depth, up to 510 JPEG and 14 RAW files
  • ISO range from 100 - 6400, 50 - 12800 with expansion
  • 61-point High Density Reticular AF, 41 cross type points, 5 double cross type
  • 150,000 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, 252 zone
  • Custom Functions - 16, USB 3.0
  • Number of cross-points depends on the speed of the lens used.
  • 59 ms. shutter lag, 150,000 cycle shutter and .71x viewfinder.
  • DxOMark overall sensor score - 87
  • Low light ISO - 2381 ISO

EOS-5D Mk III full frame camera :

  • 22.3 MP sensor powered by dual DIGIC 5+ processors
  • Optical low pass filter
  • 3.2 inch, 1040K dot LCD screen
  • Dual card slots, one CF and one SD
  • Burst rate 6 fps. Burst depth, up to 16270 JPEG and 18 RAW files
  • ISO range from 100 - 12800, 50 - 102400 with expansion.
  • 61-point High Density Reticular AF, 41 cross type points, 5 double cross type
  • iFCL metering sensor, 63 zone
  • Custom Functions 13, USB 2.0
  • Number of cross-points depends on the speed of the lens used
  • 59 ms. shutter lag, 150,000 cycle shutter and .71x viewfinder
  • DxOMark overall sensor score - 81
  • Low Light ISO - 2293 ISO

Those who presently own the EOS-5D Mk III will find the two cameras surprising similar in looks, feel, functionality and ergonomics. This is by design because Canon is looking for a 'seamless' transformation and upgrade for users as much as possible. Of course, the big difference is the massive increase in pixel density of the EOS-5Ds, accompanied by a slower burst and depth rate.

The most puzzling and unnecessary feature to me on the EOS-5Ds is the 1.3x and 1.6x crop mode. With a 50MP sensor, there is plenty of pixels available for cropping during post processing. I do not own either camera because as a wildlife photographer, neither camera fits my needs plus I already have a few full frame bodies - EOS-1V, EOS-1Ds Mk III, EOS-5D and EOS-1D X.

For those who are into wedding, portrait and landscape/architectural photography, require massive amount of pixels for large photos and shoot in generally good to medium light conditions, the EOS-5Ds is a good choice. Its megapixel sensor offers resolution approaching those of medium format cameras and the camera is packed with unmatched functions and features.

Photographers who want a full frame camera with a 20+MP sensor, an advance AF system and superior high ISO performance for travel or occasional wildlife photography should consider the EOS-5D Mk III. I am waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and the EOS-1D X Mk II, coming out later this year.

DxOMark Scores Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR Sensors

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR full frame 50MP cameras

I pay little attention to lab results and analysis of cameras. Rather, I let the real world performance of the equipment be my guide. The EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are not suitable for my needs in wildlife photography. I am waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and EOS-1D X Mk II coming out later this year.

For those interested in learning more about the cameras, Canon CPN Europe has put out an extensive technical introduction of the pair of 50MP, full frame DSLRs.

Recently, DxOMark completed their sensor analysis of the new cameras. Below is an except from their findings :

"Boasting an unprecedented 50.6Mp resolution, the EOS 5Ds and 5DsR offer a unique DSLR shooting solution. What’s more, our industry standard tests have shown these are the best sensor results yet for a Canon chip, with the 5Ds cameras offering a small step up for image quality against other full-frame semi-pro models such as the EOS-6D and EOS-5D Mk III. Our measurements show that there’s very little difference between the 5Ds and 5DsR sensors, but we’ve seen both models post better scores in print results compared to those on screen.

As usual, the best scores are recorded at each sensor’s base ISO setting, and here the 5Ds sensors are a little off the pace against the best chips we’ve analyzed (in the Nikon D810 and the Sony A7R). This is particularly true for Dynamic Range, where the Nikon and Sony models boast around a two-stop advantage at base ISO, although the gaps narrows as sensitivity is increased.

With its massive resolution and best results in print, the EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR are great solutions for photographers shooting at low ISO sensitivities for large scale prints."

Canon Videos Celebrate 10th Anniversary of EOS-5D Camera

TOKYO, May 28, 2015 - Canon Inc. announced today the celebration this year of the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the Company’s EOS 5D series of digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras. Launched in September 2005, the EOS 5D enabled advanced-amateur users to take advantage of the impressive high-image-quality performance and photographic expression unique to digital SLR cameras equipped with a 35 mm full-frame sensor, which, at the time, primarily targeted only professional-level users.

At the time of its launch in September 2005, full-frame CMOS sensors were only made available in professional-level models. In addition to being the first advanced-amateur digital SLR camera to incorporate a sensor of this size, the EOS 5D was offered at a competitive price, contributing to the popularization of full-frame-sensor cameras.

Furthermore, in November 2008, Canon launched the second-generation model in the series: the EOS 5D Mark II. The camera, which was the first in the EOS series to include a function enabling the capture of Full HD video, facilitated the widespread adoption of digital SLR cameras as a tool for capturing video. The EOS 5D Mark II made big waves in the motion picture and video production industries by delivering the exceptional image quality and impressive subject background blur unique to SLR cameras, while also allowing users to take advantage of Canon’s rich interchangeable EF lens lineup spanning over 64 models, enabling a wide spectrum of imaging expression possibilities.

In March 2012, Canon introduced the EOS 5D Mark III, featuring dramatic improvements in still-image and video quality as well as enhanced AF precision and a faster maximum continuous shooting speed. Since its launch, the EOS 5D Mark III has garnered high acclaim in the market and, as the Company’s core advanced-amateur digital SLR camera, has come to serve as a driving force for the EOS series.

Canon, through the in-house production of all key parts for its EOS series digital cameras, has made possible a highly robust lineup, ensuring that each and every model within the series, including EOS 5D-series models, is equipped with the optimal sensor. To support the diverse needs of users, Canon will further strengthen its entire EOS-series interchangeable-lens camera lineup, including the EOS 5D series, which enjoys the widespread support of professional and advanced-amateur users alike, with the aim of contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR Camera Reviews

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR 50 MP full frame cameras

The 'gang' at DigitalRev has posted a review on the Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras. Although these are very fine full frame DSLRs and currently hold the megapixel crown, I will not be getting this camera because it is not the best tool for wildlife photography. Waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and the EOS-1D X Mk II, coming the second half of 2015. If you are interested in buying this camera, now is a good time because Canon is doubling the rebate of some 'L' lens when purchased as a companion to the EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR.
