Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art Lens Aiming High

Sigma has been on a roll lately with some highly acclaimed glass introduced last year and two new global lens announced at CES 2014. One of the lens mentioned is the 50mm f/1.4 Art. However, they have brought bravo to a new height by suggesting this new lens' performance will come close to the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 lens, a fast and razor sharp prime costing $4,000 and is aimed at the fashion and advertising market.

The new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens has many more glass added, including 13 elements in 8 groups compared to 8 elements in 6 groups of the current model. The lens feels heavier and solid but will be priced significantly lower than the Zeiss, or even the high end Canon, Nikon and Sony competing models.

Canon PowerShot SX50 Replacement Coming In Spring

Canon PowerShot SX50 super zoom camera

Recently, I have reported Canon has a 100X zoom patent, apparently ready for the next PowerShot super zoom camera. At the CES 2014, Samsung announced their WB2200F, a 60X super zoom camera.

Canon plans to replace the PowerShot SX50 HS camera this Spring with a longer zoom model. Will have to wait to see if it will reach 100X or not. My own guess is it will probably be in the 60 to 80X range. The SX50 is a versatile camera and can be deployed very quickly. Sometimes, the best camera is the one you have on hand to take the photo as the situation arises. I have missed countless shots because it is too cumbersome and slow to get the camera and gear out of my equipment bag.

The Nikon D4s Mouse That Roared

Nikon announced at the CES 2014 the D4s camera is coming. This is probably the worst kept 'secret' in photography news but the 'announcement' has no specs with it, just hype to cash in on the world's media attention.

The Canon EOS-1D X Firmware 2.0.3 was released yesterday and available for immediate download. This is a major upgrade and will make the camera even better. My readers know I have picked the EOS-1D X as the best, full frame wildlife camera two years in a row. With this new Firmware upgrade, the camera will hold its own against the Nikon D4S upon its release later this year, until the Canon replacement comes out in 2015.

In addition, Canon plans to make a big splash this year, most probably around the World Cup, starting in June. This month long event will give Canon worldwide attention and they plan to announce one or two advanced DSLRs, including the replacement to the EOS-7D, some exciting EOS Cinema products and a few EF lenses. This summer should be very exciting and I am eager to place my pre-orders.

CES 2014 - Canon Displays Inner Workings Of Its Lens

Stan Horaczek of Popular Photography shot the above video at the Canon CES 2014 booth. They have a major display showing how their technology work.

There are three displays on how current Canon mechanisms found in their lenses actually work : the quiet STM motor, the electromagnetic technology they use to control the aperture diaphragm, and the image stabilization technology in their EF lenses.

Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Lens Review

.

Sigma has been on a roll in the last couple of years. They have just announced two new Global Vision lenses at the CES 2014. One of their most recent release is the 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM. This lens is newer than the venerable Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, one of the favorite lenses in my equipment bag. The Sigma 24-105mm f/4 is the lens DxOMark said is the new reference standard for professionals. The Phoblographer recently reviewed the lens and the following is an excerpt from their article :

"The Sigma 24-105mm f/4 is extremely well-built. It almost feels like a Zeiss lens. Autofocus is extremely quick throughout the entire range of the lens and image stabilization on this lens work wonders. Not to forget that the image quality of this lens is fantastic and that the lens is absolutely sharp. In the conclusion, the reviewer writes :

If I could only have one lens with me, this would be it. This lens. The Sigma 24-105mm f4. I emerged from testing this lens thinking this just may be the most well-rounded, practical lens I have ever used. It’s not about glitz or glamour. The Sigma 24-105mm f4 is about getting the shot.  This lens is really good. It is civilized and can be put to work everywhere. Sigma put a lot of thought into this lens and it’s appreciated."

Well, I agree with the reviewer that the 24-105mm focal length is a great, well-rounded lens to have on a full frame DSLR but I am not convinced enough to ditch my Canon and rush out to buy the Sigma. Canon introduced the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS in 2005. Although in the subsequent years, there has been coatings and optics advancement, the perceptible difference in marginal improvement is very small, in my opinion. However, an additional one or two stop of IS improvements on the Canon would be greatly appreciated. I have owned the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS for years and am very happy with it. You can see Travel and Wildlife photos taken with the lens worldwide on my website MichaelDanielHo.com

Life is full of memorable moments that are meant to be captured with supreme quality and rich detail. The Nikon D3300 features a high-resolution 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor to help ensure amazing image quality, even in challenging low-light shooting scenarios. The high resolution affords photographers the ability to capture crisp details or crop images with confidence. For increased image fidelity, the sensor has no optical low pass filter (OLPF), boosting resolution and image sharpness to the maximum, while the addition of a new EXPEED 4 image processor helps render true colors and precise detail in every image. EXPEED 4 also offers improved image quality at high ISOs, enhanced auto white balance performance, faster processing speeds and improved battery efficiency. Whether shooting candids of the kids or a weekend getaway at the beach, the Nikon D3300 is ready to deliver beautiful stills and stunning HD video.

The Nikon D3300 is packed with high performance features that make shooting easy and enjoyable, even in difficult shooting situations such as fast action sports and low-light scenes. A wide 100-12,800 (expandable up to 25,600) ISO range helps ensure top-quality photos and video in challenging light while an 11-point Autofocus System is ready to capture fleeting moments while easily keeping pace with even the most active toddler. Nikon’s newest HD-SLR is also capable of high-speed continuous shooting at up to 5 frames-per-second (fps), great for the fast-moving action of a soccer game or dance recital.

Create, Share, Enjoy

Brimming with fun features, the Nikon D3300 is ready to help create and share incredible stories through beautiful images and HD video. With the help of the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter, users can take advantage of Wi-Fi connectivity for instant uploading of images and videos to a smart device for easy sharing through social networks. Users can also remotely control the D3300 using their smart device as a remote “Live View” monitor. Releasing the shutter from a smart device will help make sure no one is left out of the next family photo.

The Nikon D3300 is ready to help each user realize their creative vision with 13 In-Camera Effects and four new effects modes, including Photo Illustration, Super Vivid and Pop. The D3300 is also the first Nikon HD-SLR equipped with the fourth new effects mode, Easy Panorama Mode, enabling the capture of beautiful landscapes and stunning scenic views with ease. When the story is better told with HD video, Nikon’s newest HD-SLR is ready at a moment’s notice to help users create glorious Full 1080p HD video with vivid color and sharp details, up to 60p. Capturing gorgeous HD video is easy with the Nikon D3300 with the assistance of Full-time AF (autofocus) to help keep elusive subjects in focus, and a one-touch recording button so not to miss any moment.

For those new to the benefits of D-SLR photography, Nikon has expanded upon its acclaimed Guide Mode to help users learn and explore new ways to capture great photos and HD video. Guide Mode teaches the basic functions of the camera, but also works to help the user become a better, more knowledgable photographer. When using this mode, users have access to four options: Shoot photos using example images, View/Delete, Setup and Retouch their images in-camera, making it easy for beginners to immediately take their photos to the next level.

Capture On-The-Go

The extremely lightweight and versatile D3300 is the perfect companion for a fast moving, always on the go lifestyle. The camera features a conveniently compact body (4.9” x 3.8” x 2.9”), and is ergonomically designed for a comfortable hold that is easy to take anywhere. Additionally, the camera body is constructed with carbon fiber for lightweight durability. The D3300 is also equipped with an optical viewfinder that helps frame the perfect shot in any lighting condition, whether capturing the school play or a high school graduation.

To complement the Nikon small stature of the D3300, Nikon has also introduced the new, more compact AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II standard zoom lens that inherits a familiar focal length (27-82.5mm, 35mm equivalent) while incorporating a new retractable lens barrel design found in Nikon’s 1 NIKKOR lens series. This design ensures the lens is remarkably smaller than its predecessor, and when paired with the D3300 makes the camera package nearly 30% smaller and 25% lighter. An ideal 3X zoom lens for every on-the-go moment, the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens features up to four stops of VR image stabilization, a silent wave motor to ensure quiet AF operation and auto/manual focusing options.

The 35mm f/1.8: A Versatile FX-Format Prime Ready for Anything

With the latest addition to Nikon’s popular f/1.8 prime series of FX-format lenses, Nikon has announced the new AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G, a versatile fixed lens ready to thrive in any shooting situation. The new 35mm f/1.8G lens rounds out a collection of acclaimed f/1.8 lenses including the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G, AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G and AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G lenses. Sporting the popular 35mm focal length and covering a 63 degree angle of view with a constant f/1.8 aperture, Nikon’s newest FX-format lens delivers outstanding viewfinder clarity and high contrast while providing outstanding low-light performance and depth of field control.

Great for available light environment portraits, landscapes and travel photography as well as for producing beautiful images with soft, natural bokeh, the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is a versatile and valuable addition to any FX-format photographer’s lens arsenal and sports the latest in core NIKKOR technologies that ensure elite performance. Nikon Announces Development Of D4S Camera

Canon EOS-1D X and Nikon D4 cameras

* * * Nikon D4s camera officially announced * * *

At the CES 2014, Nikon has announced their D3300, an entry-level DSLR. This new camera has a 24-megapixel sensor without an optical low pass filter, powered by the new EXPEED 4 image processor and comes with a new small and retractable standard zoom kit lens. Nikon has also announced the development of the D4S, their new flagship DSLR. It will have a new processor, more advanced AF performance, and the camera is on display at the Consumer Electronic Show, currently taking place in Las Vegas.

Frankly, I find this D4S 'announcement' to be a blatant attempt to cash in on the media attention during the CES. Canon has released a Firmware 2.0.3 upgrade to their EOS-1D X camera and it will be able to stand up to the new Nikon D4S, upon its release. I do not expect Canon to release a replacement to the EOS-1D X until 2015.

I have been a Travel and Wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for about 25 years and my readers know I have picked the EOS-1D X to be the best, full frame professional DSLR on the market today. Visit me on MichaelDanielHo.com to see my works.

CES 2014 - Sigma Announces Two New Global Vision Lenses

LAS VEGAS– Jan. 6, 2014 – Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world's most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced the launch of two new Global Vision lenses from the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lens

The improved and redesigned 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM and 50mm F1.4 DG HSM lenses are the latest additions to Sigma’s Global Vision lineup. Both lenses’ availability and pricing have yet to be announced.

“These two lenses are among our most popular, and we’re pleased to reintroduce these products by adding them to our Global Vision lineup,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The 18-200mm, in particular, is an exciting new lens as it now has macro functionality, updated optics and a Global Vision design, making it a fantastic alternative to the kit lens. As has been the case with our recent Global Vision lenses, we expect an array of photographers to gravitate to their technically advanced features and slick new look.”

The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary lens, designed specifically for APS-C DSLRs, is the successor to the 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM, which was launched in 2011. The smaller and lighter lens (15.2 ounces and 2.8x3.4 inches versus 17.3 ounces and 3x3.5 inches) now macro capabilities with a minimum focusing distance of 15.4 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3, as opposed to the lens’ earlier minimum focusing distance of 17.7 inches and max magnification ratio of 1:3.8. Its minimum working distance is 14.7 inches, which makes the lens suitable for close-up shooting with natural light, keeping shadows of the camera and lens out of the image.

The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Macro has also been updated to incorporate Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements that have a high refractive index and can correct chromatic aberration at the telephoto-end. Moreover, aspherical lens elements, including double-sided aspherical lenses, will ensure a compact size and excellent correction of distortion.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens

The new Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art has been reengineered and redesigned to set a new standard of performance in the Art line. A staple focal length, the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art is a pro level performer for full-frame DSLRs great for many different types of photography including portraits, landscapes, studio work and still-life. It has been updated to include SLD glass and optimized for rich peripheral brightness with improved large aperture performance by positioning wide elements into the front groups. Other updates include an optimized autofocus algorithm for smoother focusing and a floating focusing system to reduce lens movement while focusing. Under the Global Vision line, it features a new matte finish, improved AF on/off switch and guarantees every lens is tested with Sigma’s proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system before being shipped. Now with 13 elements in 8 groups compared to the previous 8 elements in 6 groups, it also has improved close focusing at 15.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.6

Both lenses incorporate Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) system to produce quiet, high-speed auto focus. In addition, they include Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, and to ensure high-quality images throughout the entire zoom range. The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM and 50mm F1.4 DG HSM lenses are also compatible with Sigma’s USB dock and the company’s Mount Conversion Service.

Other recently announced lenses and accessories such as the 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM lens, 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | ART and USB Dock will be on display at Sigma’s CES booth. Visit Sigma at CES 2014 at booth 10431in Central Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Jan. 7 to 10.

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 6, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of a new concept camera to its PowerShot lineup: the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Featuring a new body style and unique, new creative options, the PowerShot N100 camera helps users create and tell their visual stories by allowing the photographer to become part of the image being captured. With the innovative and new Dual Capture mode, users can simultaneously capture special moments using the Main Camera, while the Story Camera, a rear facing sub-camera, will embed a picture of them onto the main image.

To help people create unique images that tell a story, the PowerShot N100 camera offers the new Story Highlights mode. Story Highlights mode intuitively creates a highlight reel of images and video* to create a customized movie that tells a story as seen through the photographer’s eyes – all done within the camera. No longer will a photographer need to use additional software to assemble this footage.

“Canon is continually working to discover new ways for end-users to combine high-image quality and creativity in a technologically advanced compact camera,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The new PowerShot N100 is a unique digital camera designed to not only create high-quality images and video, but also capture the feelings of the photographer at the moment they take a picture.”

Become Part of the Story

Remembering a child’s first birthday and the parents’ excitement during that memorable moment can now be captured with the innovative Dual Capture mode featured in the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Easy to access and use, Dual Capture mode creates a picture-in-picture effect by simultaneously capturing the subject in the framed shot while the Story Camera, a rear-facing sub-camera, takes an image or video of the photographer as they take the picture. The PowerShot N100 camera then combines both shots into one distinctive photo or video combination. The images captured using the Story Camera can be placed in four different locations on the main image and in three different sizes at the photographer’s discretion.

Capture Your Story

To help create even more share-worthy memories, the PowerShot N100 digital camera features an artistic mode to help users creatively capture images and movies. Story Highlights mode works within the camera to create a highlight reel of selected images or movie digest clips creating a unique imaging experience. The images can be selected automatically based on events, the date they were taken, by people utilizing Face ID, or the selection can be customized based on photos hand-picked by the user. As a result, the moments that are most precious to the user are intuitively combined, allowing for complete highlights of the images taken from a friend’s wedding day or a child’s first ride on a new bicycle. The final created movie will last approximately two minutes from the automatically selected pictures and videos, or if the files were selected by the photographer, it will last a maximum of five minutes.

Share Your Story

With enhanced Wi-Fi® capabilities, the creative images taken with the PowerShot N100 camera can be shared with friends and family even while on-the-go. Using the Mobile Device Connect Button, users can connect to a compatible smartphone, a compatible tablet or a computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon’s Image Sync1 through the cloud. For the first time in Canon’s line up, the PowerShot N100 camera has the convenient connectivity of Near Field Communication (NFC™) offered on Android™ devices. After an initial one-time set up, with NFC, users simply press the Mobile Device Connect Button and tap their NFC enabled Android2 device to the PowerShot N100 camera which automatically launches the Canon Camera Window App3 so users can share images from the camera to the phone with ease.

Enhance Your Images

The Creative Shot mode on the PowerShot N100 camera includes four new filter categories to bring an enhanced artistic touch to photos. The filter categories are: Retro, Monochrome, Special and Natural. In Creative Shot mode, users compose their image and let the PowerShot N100 camera analyze the photo to apply one of a series of artistic elements of varying composition, lighting and color. After an image is captured, Creative Shot mode will automatically render five different variations of the shot to deliver unique, new perspectives while still retaining the original image. There are also 46 new filter types, including HDR effects, to help artistic expression reach new creative levels.

In addition to the creative imaging functions, the PowerShot N100 camera offers a 5x optical zoom, a 24mm Wide-Angle f/1.8 lens, a 12.1-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor to help provide stunning image quality. Users also have the ability to quickly access and then record high-quality 1080p Full HD video with the dedicated movie button. To make choosing the ideal setting for each shot convenient, the camera’s Intelligent IS System allows the PowerShot N100 camera to automatically select the optimal image stabilization settings according to the shooting conditions, so shooting in dimly lit or bright situations can be easy and accurate.

“High-quality image capturing, along with convenient sharing capabilities are paramount whenever Canon revamps its line of VIXIA HF R-Series camcorders,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “Building on the foundation of previous models, these new VIXIA camcorders have once again enhanced the image quality and user experience for our customers, while providing users with dual function capabilities with live streaming and high-quality remote monitoring.”

Outstanding Image Quality and Recording Capabilities

Three new Canon VIXIA HF R-Series camcorders, the VIXIA HF R52, VIXIA HF R50 and VIXIA HF R500 all feature outstanding image quality powered with a Canon 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor, and the DIGIC DV4 Image processor, providing shooters with the ability to capture vibrant 1920 x 1080 resolution Full HD video. Together with the improved 57x Advanced Zoom and SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, shooters can capture different types of action, like a day in the park, or on vacation sightseeing. The VIXIA HF R-Series also features Intelligent IS, which automatically chooses from four different modes to help provide the optimal image stabilizations based off of certain shooting conditions. From their child’s first steps to the championship soccer game, the new VIXIA HF R-Series camcorders continue to offer users the outstanding image quality and zoom capabilities users have become accustomed to from the VIXIA line. A three-inch capacitive touch panel LCD allows the user to quickly and intuitively switch between settings without affecting their ability to capture their desired images.

For enhanced creativity shooters can also customize their video by selecting from seven Cinema Look Filter effects. These filters can be applied during or after filming. Additionally, while in Audio Scene Select mode, users can select from eight predetermined audio modes that will optimize audio settings based off the shooting conditions, including two new ones – meeting and festival. The built-in microphone/headphone terminal provides users with the flexibility to record using an auxiliary microphone, or listen to what they’re recording with headphones.

When shooting with the new Canon VIXIA HF R-Series camcorders users have several options for how they would like to store their treasured memories. The VIXIA HF R52 features 32 GB of internal memory, and the VIXIA HF R50 provides 8GB of internal memory – while all VIXIA HF R-series camcorders allow for the user to record to an SD memory card. Shooters can capture crisp, 1080/60p high-quality imagery of moving subjects, such as at a dance recital or school play when recording in either MP4 (35 Mbps) or AVCHD Progressive (28 Mbps). When a shooter chooses to utilize Dual Recording mode, they can record movies simultaneously in both MP4 and AVCHD Progressive, while the built-in down conversion feature creates MP4 files for convenient and easy sharing on the web to popular social networking sites like Facebook or YouTube.

Wi-Fi® Connectivity and Mobile Sharing

Featuring built-in Wi-Fi, the VIXIA HF R52 and VIXIA HF R50 are equipped to add convenience and expand shooting options for filming important moments as well as providing remote monitoring capabilities. Through the free Canon CameraAccess plus** app users can record, zoom in and out, and live stream video on supported Android ™ and iOS® devices. An optional Pan Table base accessory can be attached to the bottom of both the VIXIA HF R52 camcorder and VIXIA HF R50 camcorder, allowing for the camera to act as a baby monitor or security camera. While using the Canon CameraAccess plus app and Pan Table base together users can chose to have the camcorder oscillate left to right up to 200 degrees. The Pan Table can also be manually adjusted for a tilt of up to 20 degrees.

And sharing videos of a newborn baby crawling along the living room floor, or a graduate walking across a stage to receive their diploma, with family and friends is easy with the Canon Movie Uploader app*. Free to download, Canon’s Movie Uploader app, available on iOS platform, allows users to send video directly to a compatible smartphone or tablet for instant online sharing. Additionally, Remote Browse***, available on Android devices allows users to preview or download files to a compatible smartphone, tablet, or PC when using a web browser. Once both devices are wirelessly connected, users can download or playback their videos instantly without the need for an application or other software.

Advanced Baby Mode

All three VIXIA HF R-Series camcorders feature Advanced Baby Mode, giving users the ability to select the optimal camcorder settings for capturing a baby’s daily growth. Advanced Baby Mode now gives users the ability to record up to three separate babies, and chronologically save videos into a special Baby Album, seamlessly tracking the growth of each child. The Touch Decoration feature allows users to “stamp” their videos with the baby’s height, weight, and number of days old. Additionally, while using Touch Decoration, users can choose to include their own drawings, captions, and animations.
