Adobe Lightroom 6.14 Released - Last Update For Perpetual Licenses

From Adobe:

The goal of this release is to provide perpetual customers additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom. You should only update to Lightroom 6.14 if you are currently holding a license to our perpetual product.

Please note, there will be no additional updates after 6.14 for the perpetual, standalone version of Lightroom. You can check out this blog post for more information when this was announced earlier.

As always, new cameras are supported for legacy versions of Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, After Effects, and Photoshop Elements through the free Adobe DNG Converter.

For native camera raw support and ongoing updates with new features try out Lightroom Classic or Lightroom CC. These features include color and luminance range masking and the new auto. This along with other future imaging and performance enhancements are automatically included with a membership.

Find the latest available downloads of Lightroom 6 here. If you have a Creative Cloud plan of any type, you do not need to purchase Lightroom 6.

You can also find the new cameras and lens profiles that are now supported with 6.14.

Adobe Announces Their December Update To Photoshop Lightroom Classic CC

Today we’re proud to release updates to the entire Lightroom CC ecosystem, including for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and the web, as well as updates to Lightroom Classic CC and Adobe Camera Raw. We’ve added support for new cameras and lenses, and added some great new features.

New Auto Settings, powered by Adobe Sensei

Auto has been completely reworked to create better results, every time. Using an advanced neural network powered by Adobe Sensei, our artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning platform, the new Auto Settings creates a better photo by analyzing your photo and comparing to tens of thousands of professionally edited photos to create a beautiful, pleasing image.  The new Auto is available ecosystem wide, including in Lightroom CC, Lightroom CC for iOS, Lightroom CC for Android, Lightroom CC on the web, Lightroom Classic, and Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).

Lightroom CC on Desktop

Tone Curve

The Tone Curve is one of the most popular tools used by photographers for advanced control over the tonality, contrast, and color balance of an image. You can use either the Parametric Curve or the Point Curve modes to tune the tonality and contrast of the image, and the Red, Green, and Blue modes to adjust the color balance and stylize your image. The Tone Curve lives next to the Auto button in the Light panel — check it out and let us know what you think.

Split Toning

Split Toning allows you to stylize your photo through color tints in the highlights and shadows of your image. You can use the Split Toning tool to simulate traditional black and white tints and toners like sepia or selenium toners, simulate printing on colored paper, or create a modern stylization on color images. Split Toning lives in the Effects panel.

Change Capture Time

Lightroom CC now enables you to adjust the capture time, for both single photos as well as a set of photos, providing relief for those times that you forgot to change your camera’s time or time zone settings. Select a photo (or series of photos) and use the pencil icon in the Info panel to change capture time. Lightroom CC will update the capture date and make sure that your photos show up on the right day and time in the organize view, making it easier to find your photos when you need them.
View your photos in full screen by using either the F key or by navigating to View-> Detail Full Screen.

Android

In addition to the new Auto described above, we added the following to Lightroom CC on Android:

• App Shortcuts — For Android Nougat and later devices, tap and hold on the app icon to quickly launch the app into popular modes.
• More control for managing storage.
• Resolved an issue that prevented some Huawei customers from importing images.
• Resolved an issue that caused a crash for some Pixel 2 customers on export.
• Resolved a problem that prevented some Samsung customers from installing the previous version.
• Bug fixes and speed improvements.

iOS

In addition to the new Auto described above, we added the following to Lightroom CC on iOS:

• Watermarking on export — Create and customize a text based watermark for use when exporting your image from Lightroom CC on iOS.
• Improved quality to HDR capturing.
• Bug fixes and speed improvements.

Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera Raw

In addition to the new Auto described above, we’ve made a refinement to the Color Range Masking tool.  Based on your feedback, we’ve made it easier to remove individual sample points. You can do this by holding down the Alt (Win) or Option (Mac) key while using your mouse to select the sample point.

Lightroom Classic CC also now supports tethered capture with the Nikon D850 camera.
An update to Lightroom 6 for perpetual licensed customers for new camera support will be available on December 19th.

Adobe Photo Product Manager Tom Hogarty posted on the Lightroom Journal about the lackluster performance of Lightroom, especially its glacial speed.

"I would like to address concerns recently voiced by our community of customers around Lightroom performance, as improving performance is our current top priority. We have a history, starting with our first public beta, of working with our customers to address workflow and feature needs, and we’d like to take that same approach regarding your performance concerns. 

We already understand many of the current pain points around GPU, import performance, certain editing tasks and review workflows and are investing heavily in improving those areas."

Adobe is soliciting ideas and opinions on what users think and what they would like Lightroom to be faster at.

"Over the past year we’ve added numerous enhancements to address your performance concerns but we understand we will have a lot of work to do to meet your expectations." 

"If you have feedback or would like to work with the Lightroom team on your most pressing issues, please fill out this survey."

In the above survey, Adobe is collecting usage and performance information, and soliciting three specific performance issues users have.

A Video History Of Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is practically synonymous with digital photography. It was created in 1988 by software engineers Thomas and John Knoll. The original software's name was based on version numbers. In October 2002, Adobe introduced its new Creative Suite brand and susequently new versions of Photoshop carried the initials "CS" plus a number. 

Starting June 2013, Adobe again came out with a new brand, called the Creative Cloud. Photoshop's licensing arrangement was changed to a software rental model and the "CS" suffixes was renamed as "CC". Below is an interesting, condensed video of the history of Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop CC 2017.0.1 Adds Touch Bar Support

Just a few weeks ago, Apple revealed the all new MacBook Pro featuring a breakthrough new interface that replaces the traditional row of function keys with a Retina-quality Multi-Touch display called the Touch Bar. We’ve been working hard to build custom support for the Touch Bar, and I’m pleased to announce that, as promised, it is available in today’s update to Photoshop.

I’ve had a chance to use the Touch Bar a bit and I find it exciting for two reasons. First, the Touch Bar is useful for surfacing a contextual “next step”. This is helpful both for a beginner who might not know how to navigate Photoshop, and for an experienced user in giving them speedier access to the desired next action. Second, the Touch Bar is useful for accessing controls in a new way, especially controls that were sometimes clumsy with a keyboard and mouse.

In designing the interaction with the Touch Bar, we imagined three distinct categories of functions that would be useful to our customers: Layer Properties, Brushes, and (true to Photoshop’s ethos) your customizable Favorites.

Adobe Photoshop CC MacBook Pro Touch Bar Support

Inside the Layer Properties section, you can quickly access common actions like place a Smart Object, clip Layers, and open Select & Mask. Controls for changing the blend mode and scrubbing through the history are especially nice to use on the Touch Bar Retina display because of a visual preview of the result.

The Brushes section gives you quick access to brush color, size, hardness, opacity and flow. Each of these commands has a movable slider to pick just the right value.

The Favorites sections allows you to configure your own set of favorite actions. This includes any combination of actions from the previous sections, or other commands like Full screen mode, Flip Horizontal/Vertical, and launching the macOS share menu.

Adobe Added Many Cameras & Lens Support In Lightroom CC 2015.8

Adobe added a new View Mode called Reference View in the Develop Module which enables users to compare 2 different images to make them visually consistent.  This is helpful when making a group of images from a single event look similar or setting the white balance appropriately in mixed lighting conditions.

To get started,

• Go to the Develop Module
• Click on Reference View.  Its on the Toolbar, and you may need to show the Toolbar if hidden
• Drag and Drop your Reference Photo onto the left pane.  You can change your Reference Photo by either dragging a different image onto the left pane or using the “Set as Reference Photo” context menu in the Library Module.
• Edit the active photo. Use the Reference Photo to guide your editing decisions.

Performance Improvements

Lightroom CC (2015.8) / 6.8 includes ‘under-the-hood’ changes designed to improve the responsiveness of your Lightroom experience.  You should notice improvements in image editing responsiveness when background tasks (such as Preview Generation) are running, moving files between folders, running catalog backups.

Fit/Fill Improvements

You can now zoom to fit and zoom to fill.  Particularly when using ultra high-resolution (i.e. 4K and 5K) monitors, prior versions of Lightroom would not completely fill the Loupe window.

Ability to filter or create a Smart Collection for images that have Snapshots associated with them.
Export a Collection Set as a new catalog.

8/8/2015 – Today we released Photoshop CC 2015.5 update version 2015.5.1 (Mac and Windows) to address several issues .

Customer reported issues resolved

• Fixed customer submitted crashing issues
• Subtool reverts to primary tool after using keyboard shortcut
• Unable to Export individual layers that are nested in Artboard > Group
• “Rasterize EPS Format” dialogue box doesn’t remember Mode setting
• Embed color profile result reflects whatever it was set last time
• Text accidentally commits when try to transform Paragraph text using bounding box transform handles
• Cursor doesn’t correctly change to Commit cursor to differentiate from Rotate and Move cursor
• Print color is off when using App Manage Color (Mac only)
• Error : “Could not apply the workspace because the file was not found” when opening a file

Several fixes and improvements for Select and Mask :

• Select and Mask: Command not available on non-pixel layer masks
• Select and Mask: Refine Edge Brush Tool creating artifacts along the brush stroke in mask
• Select and Mask: Redraw corruption (RGB 16bit/32 bit) with Show Original in certain zoom levels (preview mode “black and white”)
• Select and Mask: Using the Refine edge brush on one area of a pre-existing selection may cause certain hard edges in another area to change a few pixel values, especially when the image is in very high resolution
• Select and Mask: Using brush tool with feather 8 or more and zoom level 50 or lower get redraw issue
• Select and Mask: With a selection, the output defaults to selection, even if the previous output setting was a mask
• Select and Mask: Inverting a selection outputs the original selection
• Select and Mask: Crash when double-clicking adjustment mask
• Select and Mask: Program error when image is multi-channel

How to get the updates 

• Launch Photoshop and choose Help > Updates.

Adobe Lightroom Mobile iOS 2.4 Can Edit RAW Files

Adobe has introduced the ability to open and process RAW files on Lightroom for Mobile. Before the announcement, Lightroom Mobile supported RAW editing, but only for DNG files. The new feature is found only on Lightroom for iOS Version 2.4 but not on Lightroom for Android Version 2.1, at this time.  This is clearly an effort by Adobe to preempt Apple's expected released of iOS10 in Q4, which includes the support of RAW images.

New features on Lightroom iOS 2.4 include Linear and Radial Selections, keyboard shortcuts, lens profile and copyright insertion. The new Lightroom Android 2.1 gets a new Pro mode for the built-in camera plus a new Camera widget for direct access. Lightroom iOS 2.4 and Lightroom Android 2.1 can be downloaded free of charge from iTunes and Google Play.


“With the raw technology preview, you’ll be able to import raw photos immediately to either your iPhone or iPad, edit them, and then share them, anywhere you’ve got a connection. Our goal with Lightroom for mobile is to make it an indispensable part of your photography workflow.

Once you open up a RAW file in Lightroom Mobile, you’ll be able to do the same things you can do on desktop: adjust white balance, recover blown highlights, access the original color data, editing an uncompressed photo, and more, “all using the exact same technology that powers Lightroom on your desktop.

We’ve run Lightroom for mobile through its paces on a number of different files, including 50MP images taken with the Canon EOS-5Ds, proving that you really can edit nearly any photo anywhere.”
