Canon plans to announce new RF Prime and Super Telephoto lenses for the EOS R camera in 2020

As a lifelong user of Canon equipment, I am not a fan of the Canon EOS R and RF cameras even though I was invited to a VIP preview just before their official launch in September 2018.

My biggest concern is the wasted opportunity in utilizing the current EF lens lineup without an adapter and the lack of must-have features on the current EOS-R model. The introduction of the new RF line of lenses raised a formidable barrier for me.

Canon seems to think a plethora of new RF lens introduction, including fast primes and Super Telephotos next year will help change minds. They will not change my mind until a new high end EOS-R camera appears with pro DSLR functions and features. 

The demise of the DSLR camera has been predicted by numerous pundits. Same prediction that the electric car will replace the internal combustion engine automobile. Perhaps that will happen one of these decades but I think the years of DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras coexisting are still ahead of us.

2020 is a big year for Canon. The Summer Olympics will take place in Japan and the world's photographers will converge in Tokyo and all the other cities around Japan. Canon is expected to announce the replacement to the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS-7D Mark II cameras some time in early 2020, along with a pro version of the EOS R mirrorless camera. Canon has started field testing the EOS-1D X Mark III camera

There is no secret a successor to the venerable Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera is coming in 2019. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics is the perfect event to highlight Canon's dominance in Mirrorless and high end DSLR cameras.

With the recent announcement of the Series III version of their Super Telephoto lenses, Canon's job is only half done. The majority of pro sports and wildlife photography in the world are done with the EOS-1D and Super Telephoto lens combo. There is also talk from Canon about eventually releasing a full frame, mirrorless version of an EOS-1D camera. I may be quite interested in such a body for my work since the EOS-R and EOS-RP cameras will not find a place in my equipment bag. 

The EOS-1 line of cameras has been my equipment of choice since 1989 and the current EOS-1D X Mark II body is my workhorse since its introduction in February 2016. Although the Mark II is a very capable camera, I like to see the following incremental improvement in the Mark III :

• A new sensor with mid 20MP rating
• Maintain 12 - 14 fps without mirror lockup or Live View
• First in class high ISO performance
• First in class 4K video performance
• New AF system with around 100 AF points. More dual cross-type and cross-type points
• New LCD monitor with 3.0 million dots 
• Built in WiFi (Not for myself. For photo journalists meeting their deadlines) 

I expect the new camera to be announced some time in late Q4 of 2019 or before the CP+ Show in February 2020 and before the release of the pro EOS R model. Please bookmark this site and check back for the latest news and development.

Canon To Announce A Slew Of RF Lenses For The EOS-R Camera In 2019

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer, and my three decades of utilizing Canon equipment. As you know, I am not a buyer of the current EOS-R camera but will reconsider my decision when they announce their pro model this year.

Also expected in 2019 is a bunch of RF lens announcement. The following are rumored :

• RF 16-35mm f/2.8L 
• RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS
• RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS
• RF 105mm f/1.4L
• RF 85mm f/1.8 IS STM
• RF Macro lens
• RF non-L kit lens

My advice to Canon is, do not place too much emphasis on the EOS-R and RF lenses, at the expense of the traditional high end EOS cameras and EF lenses, like the successors to the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS-7D Mark II. There will be ample space for both camera and lens system to coexist for many years to come. As a global leader in photographic equipment, you can handle more than one system at a time.

The Rugby World Cup in 2019, follow by the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 are the perfect events to highlight Canon's dominance in sports and wildlife photography. How many pro photographers do you think will be taking a EOS-R camera to these events?
