The Wildlife Ho-tographer's latest equipment bag

   





For over thirty years, my passion for the environment and conservation has centered on my love of travel and wildlife photography. Many animal and plant species are going extinct at an alarming rate. We live in a time when nature finds itself in a fragile state. There are less habitat and more people, fauna and flora are under severe pressure.

Wildlife Photography can be a powerful tool for conservation. My mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of the world's biodiversity and the need for its preservation, through the lens of wildlife imagery. Powerful wildlife and nature images are effective and emotive tools in building public awareness and education in combating this worrisome decline.

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer, using Canon equipment for over 30 years. My subjects range from small Hummingbirds to gigantic Blue whales, the largest animal on Planet Earth, ever. Every year, I go on multiple photo shoots around the globe and meet photographers and wildlife enthusiasts who want to know what equipment I use and how much camera gear I bring along on my trips. My philosophy is to keep things simple and my equipment bag as light as possible. I usually bring no more than 2 bodies and 3 lenses.

A combination of the following gear in my equipment inventory is what I usually bring along but I have access to other lenses, cameras and gear when I have a need for them and still own cameras like the original EOS-1EOS-1 V and EOS-5D

I have recently acquired my first mirrorless camera and RF lens - the Canon EOS R3 with the RF 100-500mm lens. My Equipment Bag :

EOS R3 - My first mirrorless camera. Canon built the EOS R3 to emphasize speed and AF performance especially suited for fast action photography like sports and wildlife. The 24.1-megapixel sensor is a back-illuminated stacked CMOS designed and manufactured in house. The camera can capture up to 30 fps blackout-free with its electronic shutter, and up to 12 fps with its mechanical shutter.  The EOS R3 combined with the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS lens, make an unbeatable handheld combo for wildlife photography. EOS 1D X Mark III - With a maximum speed of up to 16 fps, new 20 megapixel sensor and 191-point AF system, this body is the successor to the venerable EOS-1D X, and an ideal wildlife camera. The superior native ISO performance and lighting fast frame rate makes photographing moving wildlife in dim light easier and when combined with the EOS R3, will provide me with unmatched flexibility on photo shoots. The EOS-1D X Mark III combined with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS lens, plus the 1.4X built in extender, make an awesome combo for wildlife photography. See my review of this awesome camera.

EOS 1D X Mark II - With a maximum speed of up to 14 fps, new 20 megapixel sensor and 61-point AF system, this body is the successor to the venerable EOS-1D X, and a versatile wildlife camera. The superior native ISO performance and lighting fast frame rate makes photographing moving wildlife in dim light easier and when combined with the EOS R3, will give excellent performance on photo shoots. The EOS-1D X Mark II works very well with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS lens. Read my review of this very good wildlife camera.

I have used all the EOS-1D bodies since its inception in 1989 and still prefer the 1.3X APS-H sensor of the MK IV for the extra reach. When I upgraded to the 1D X MK II, MK IV and 1D X, it was a small incremental improvement each time, but the EOS-1D X Mark III is a much improved DSLR. I have owned the EOS 1D X Mark III camera for about a year and make it my main camera body for wildlife photo shoots around the world. Click here to read my review of the original EOS 1D X camera.

EOS 1D Mark IV - 10 fps, 16 megapixel and 45-point AF system make this rugged camera an ideal wildlife choice for me. The 1.3X APS-H sensor brings me a little closer to the action. The noise level is good when photographing moving wildlife in dim light with ISO up to 3200. I have used all the 1D bodies through the decades and this is my one of my favorite cameras to date and trusted workhorse for wildlife shoots. The Mk IV has doubled up for me as a travel and landscape camera when combined with the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II and the 24-105mm f/4L lenses. The MK IV will serve me well as the other 1D body I turn to when I want a little extra reach. Read my comparison between the EOS-1D X and EOS-1D Mk IV.

EOS 5D Mark IV - 7 fps, 30 megapixel, 61-point AF system and Dual Pixel CMOS technology make this 4th generation 5D camera my choice as a second camera when I am on tour. The EOS-1D Mark IV can feel a bit dated at times but this full frame body with built-in WiFi and GPS is an ideal camera for wildlife photography when the action is not too fast. The noise level is good when photographing moving wildlife in dim light with ISO up to 3200. It is becoming another trusted workhorse on my wildlife shoots.

EOS 5Ds - After much deliberation, I have finally replaced my venerable EOS-1Ds Mark III with this full frame, 61-point AF, 50 megapixel camera. The 5Ds will be used primarily for nature and travel photography but occasionally for wildlife that don't move too much. The resolution of its impressive sensor,  the ability to crop the image (on the camera) to 1.3x and 1.6x are great advantages for me when it comes to wildlife photography, offsetting its main disadvantage - the slow 5 fps burst rate. I will be taking this camera on many real world photo shoots and writing a comprehensive review on it in the next few months.

EOS 7D Mark II - In my opinion, this is the best value in cropped frame DSLR today. The 1.6X APS-C sensor, 10 fps, 20 megapixel and 61-point AF system make this body ideal for wildlife and bird photography. This new camera has the Dual Pixel CMOS technology built-in, can autofocus down to f/8 and has much improved ISO performance over the original 7D. With good light, the camera's performance is exceptional. I like the added reach of the 7D and put the Canon BG-E16 grip on the body to give it a 1D like feel. EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II - A superb 'handholdable' Super Telephoto wildlife lens. If speed is not paramount, I will use the EF 300mm f/4L IS but it gives up a small difference in sharpness at about half the weight and a fraction of the price. Excellent image quality with 1.4x or 2.0x extender mounted. The lens is tack sharp and works well with 1D, 5D and 7D bodies and the image quality is unparalleled.

EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II - This is one of my favorite Canon Super Telephoto lens for wildlife photography. This lens was announced on September 15, 2014. Its weight, speed and performance combination is hard to beat for a full day's photo shoot without a tripod. I have taken many of my bird-in-flight shots with the Series I model of this lens. The lens performs well with the 1.4x and 2.0x extenders. When used with the EOS-7D Mk II and EOS-1D MK IV, I can shoot at 1200+mm and 1000+mm focal length handholding the combo. This gives me unmatched mobility and reach. You can read my review of the Series II version. This is my favorite Super Telephoto wildlife lens when I travel light.

EF 400mm f/5.6L
 - This is another one of my favorite Canon lens for wildlife photography. First introduced in 1993, it lacks Image Stabilization found in most EF lenses these days but it is one of the sharpest lens in Canon's lineup. The relative light weight and performance combination is hard to beat for a full day's photo shoot without a tripod. I have taken many of my bird-in-flight shots with this amazingly under-rated lens as well. The lens performs well with the 1.4X extenders. When used with the EOS-1D bodies, it can autofocus down to f/8. This gives me unmatched mobility and reach. An upgrade of this venerable lens with an IS system would be great.

EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x - My ideal lens combo for wildlife photography is the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and the 200-400mm f/4L IS with the built in 1.4X extender. This way I can travel 'light' and still have the highest quality glass covering a wide range of focal lengths. Canon has reduced the price of this lens recently, down from the original price of $11,799. It is a great buy for those who don't mind the weight of this glass. I have put this amazing glass through many vigorous wildlife photo shoots around the globe and it continues to surprise me by its performance.

EF 500mm f/4L IS II - One of my favorite Super telephoto lens in Canon's lineup. The Series II version is one of their sharpest and a great wildlife lens. When I use a full sized tripod, this glass is my choice and sometimes I handhold this lens for a short period of time. The Series I lens has been discontinued but one can still buy it from dealers with left over inventory. The new lens comes with superior optics and coatings, is incrementally better in every way and reduces the weight by 1 1/2 pound.

EF 600mm f/4L IS III - For those occasions when extra reach is paramount, I bring this ultimate Series III telephoto lens from Canon. For brilliantly clear results even in challenging situations, Super Spectra Coatings (SSC) and Air Sphere Coatings (ASC) help minimize ghosting and flare. Heat-rejecting paint and two-layer barrel structure help keep the lens cooler especially in hot climate like Africa or India. With a shorter minimum focusing distance, full-time manual AF, two selectable focus presets plus a major weight reduction of about 2 pounds over the Series II model make this lens a must have for serious wildlife and sports photographers.

Together with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x, EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II and EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II, these lenses form the backbone of my Super Telephoto lens inventory. Click here to see how the EF 500mm f/4L lens is made.

RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS - This super telephoto zoom lens delivers a superb combination of cutting-edge performance, compact construction and brilliant resolving power specifically designed for the EOS R system. The versatile range of 100mm to 500mm is ideal for sports, wildlife, and even aviation photography while maintaining a compact, travel-ready size and weight.  The lens features one Super UD and six UD lenses.  Fluorine coated front and rear lens elements provide resistance to dirt, moisture and oils, while L-series construction with dust and weather resistance provide reliability even in challenging conditions.  With its built-in, 3-mode, and up-to 5-stop optical image stabilization system, and high-speed Dual Nano USM autofocus motors, the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM will provide superb optical performance for any wildlife shoot.

EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS - My ideal lens combo for wildlife photography is the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II and the 200-400mm f/4L IS with the built in 1.4X extender. However, there are situations when I am restricted to just one lens or it's impractical to change lens, then I reach for the EF 28-300mm. This versatile 10X+ zoom lens has very good optical performance and can focus down to less than two and a half feet over the entire focal length. This is a great wildlife lens especially in Hawaii. I call this my 'Maui lens' because the Humpback whales can come just a few feet from my zodiac and this lens will capture the image with little problem, even on APS-C cameras.

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III - Super sharp and fast lens for close up wildlife action, providing up to 4 stops of correction at all focal lengths. I have used this lens for years and the latest version is the best yet. An excellent lens for closeup, lowlight travel and wildlife photography and works well with both the 1.4X and 2.0X extenders.

EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS - I held off buying this lens for a while because the 70-300mm DO was such a disappointment for me. The extra reach and lighter weight ( compared to the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II ) of this lens comes in handy when I am photographing larger wildlife in decent light. Excellent 4 stop IS compensation. Another great lens for cetacean and wildlife photo shoots. The drawbacks are extenders cannot be used on this lens and it does not come with a zoom ring.

EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II - This brand new lens is a 'light weight', all round wildlife lens with excellent build. It uses a zoom ring design to get from 100mm to 400mm. Excellent for wildlife and whale photography. Image quality is great even with the 1.4X extender on EOS-1D and EOS-7D Mk II bodies. You can read my review on the Series II version. I will write an extended review of this lens once I have taken it out on more photo shoots.

EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro - Superb macro lens that can be used with extenders. Excellent build with medium fast speed. A must own lens for serious macro photography. I have used it to photograph Hummingbirds closeup when the lighting conditions are good.


EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II - A great, all round lens for travel and landscape photography. This lens will be on my EOS-1D X Mark II or EOS-5Ds when I take travel photos or closeup wildlife shots. The focal lengths and speed are ideal for indoor and outdoor shooting conditions and the IS offers a 4 stop advantage. It comes with the latest coatings and fluorite technology.

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III - This lens is great for wide angle landscape shots on the EOS-1D X bodies and a versatile travel lens on the EOS-1D MK IV as well. Very sharp and fast. Can be used indoors when flash photography is prohibited. Canon has announced the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS and EF 11-24mm f/4L glass. The f/4 model found a home in my equipment bag.

EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye - This lens is for landscape and wildlife photographers who want the look and feel only possible with extreme wide angle and fisheye photography. With its unique focal length range, the EF 8-15mm f/4L USM is the world's widest fisheye zoom lens. It delivers 180° diagonal angle of view images for all EOS SLR cameras with imaging formats ranging from full-frame to APS-C, and provides 180° circular fisheye images for full-frame EOS models. I use this lens to photograph whales and other marine animals when I am in the water. To do it professionally, I use my EOS-1D Mk IV camera with the EF 8-15mm lens and the AquaTech underwater housing, topped with a dome lens port for maximum angle of view. On land, this super wide angle lens will capture stunning nature photos and stimulate creativity.

EF 50mm f/1.4 USM - This walk around lens is a solid performer and great value. I am not a portrait photographer and seldom use a 50mm lens so there is little need to own a better performing glass. An upgrade to Mark II of this lens is needed to take advantage of the advancement in optics and coatings since its first introduction in 1993.

Extender EF 1.4X and 2.0X III - Series III extenders offer a 40% or 100% boost to the focal length of the lens with a corresponding loss of 1 to 2 stops in aperture setting. Although they focus faster, I find no noticable IQ improvement in the latest extenders over the Series II versions under real world conditions and use them only sparingly. The Series III extenders are supposed to mate especially well with the Series II Super Telephoto lens but I cannot find any evidence to that claim. I am not a big fan of extenders and will use my legs first to close the distance between me and my subjects.

Speedlite 600EX II RT - I am not a big user of flash but sold my 580 EX II for a good price and upgraded to the 600EX II RT. Professional quality and build makes this flash perfect for the 1D bodies. It offers an expanded zoom range and a higher guide number, plus a number of improvements over its predecessor in both operation and feel. With the added wireless two-way radio communication, it allows additional creativity.

Kirk BH-3 Ball Head - This compact, light weight ball head is perfect for photographer like myself who prefers to travel light and do not want to over pay for any gear. It weighs a mere 1.2 pounds and is rated for a 15 pound load. I can mount the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens and the Canon 1D X camera with extender on it with no problem. It is professional grade, solidly built in the United States and comes with a very reasonable price. For heavier loads, I mount the Kirk BH-1 on my tripod. I have upgraded all my Canon tripod foot with the Kirk replacement.

Gitzo GT5543XL - This premium carbon fiber tripod is when I have room and weight to spare in my equipment bag and want to pack the heaviest load for my tour. It is longer than the SLIK tripods I have and weighs just about 7 pounds, comes with no center column, rated for over 80 pound load and extends to over 6 feet tall. Gitzo tripods are extremely well built and rugged but sell for a premium price and may not be a good value for all photographers.

SLIK Vari CF 704 - This light weight, full sized carbon fiber tripod weighs only 2.8 pounds but can support over 17 pounds of equipment. That's enough for a top of the line ball head, Canon 1D body and up to the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens. It is almost 5 inch shorter than the Gitzo GT 2542LS. I use this tripod when the job calls for a shorter, full sized tripod than can handle a big load. SLIK is one of the best kept secret in carbon fiber tripods today. The technology and quality are first rate and the prices are reasonable.

Gitzo GM 2542 - This compact carbon fiber monopod is an ideal tool for me when it is not practical to deploy a tripod. It weighs a mere 1.1 pounds and is rated for about 66 pound load. I mount the Kirk BH-1 ball head and Canon 1D X Mark II or 1D Mark IV with 400mm DO IS II lens on it with ease.

Tamrac Expedition 8X Backpack - Sadly, Tamrac has been bought out by GuruGear but this is the pack I use to carry larger equipment when I go 'heavy'. The main compartment is completely foam padded with numerous adjustable dividers to protect multiple pro-size digital SLRs, a full range of lenses (up to the EF 800mm f/5.6L), flashes and a laptop. The best thing is it's 'small' enough to be carried on planes.

Tamrac Adventure 9 Backpack - I use this Backpack when I travel 'light'. This pack is divided into upper and lower padded compartments. The lower compartment can accommodate 2 pro-size bodies and 2 lenses. The upper compartment can accommodate additional equipment including the Canon 400mm f/4 DO IS II lens and there is room for a laptop. The pack is small enough for me to take on planes in addition to a carryon suitcase.

Wildlife Photography in the Southern Oceans - Day 11

Still on my photo shoot down in the Southern Oceans. Weather and sea conditions are quite nice but wildlife sightings are so so. Saw quite a few whale blows and even a breach about one hundred feet from the bow of the ship but not able to photograph any cetaceans so far.

The bird sightings are a bit better with decent Albatross, Arctic terns and Penguin action. The Canon EOS-7D Mk II, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II gear I brought along to test are working just fine but I have little time to really go through the photos. Wildlife Photography In The Southern Oceans






I am off to the Southern Oceans for a wildlife photo shoot of mostly penguins, pelagic birds, seals and whales. As you can see form the map, the Penguin breeding ranges are quite huge, spanning a large swathe of the southern part of South America, mostly in the countries of Chile, Argentina and the Falkland Islands. South Georgia is off my itinerary on this trip.

The species I hope to encounter and photograph are the Magellanic, Macaroni, Southern RockHopper and maybe King penguins. The Cetacean sightings may include Orcas, Humpback, Southern Right and Minke whales plus dolphins. Pelagic birds may include a few species of Albatrosses, Petrels, Seagulls, Ducks, etc.

There are 3 pieces of new Canon gear I plan to test extensively - EOS-7D Mk II , EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II lenses.  In addition, I will be bringing the old favorites - EOS-1D X , EOS-1D Mk IV and EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM 1.4x Extender lens. Wildlife Photography - Jaguars in the Pantanal, Brazil

I am off on a wildlife photo shoot in the Pantanal, Brazil. Brazil is the largest country in South America and shares a common border with every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. Brazil comprises almost half the South American continent (47.3%), has a population of over 200 million and is the fifth largest country in the world, after the Russian Federation, Canada, the United States and China. The Equator line crosses Brazil at the Northern region; the Tropic of Capricorn crosses the country at the Southeastern region.




The Pantanal is located in the Center West region of Brazil. “Pantanal” is a Portuguese word for marshland and is considered the biggest swamp area of the world. It covers an area of between 54,000 to 75,000 square miles, in the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and areas of Paraguay. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Area. About 650 different species of birds, 80 of mammals, 260 of fish, and 50 of reptiles live there. This region is similar to the U.S. Florida's Everglades.

The Jaguar (Panthera onca) is a big cat belonging to the Panthera genus, and is the only Panthera species found in the Americas. It ranks third in size after the tiger and the lion, and the largest cat in the Western Hemisphere. The Jaguar's present range extends from Southwestern United States and Mexico across much of Central America and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Apart from a very small population in Arizona (southeast of Tucson), the cat has largely been exterminated from the United States since the early 20th century.




It is a spotted cat that is often mistaken for a leopard. Jaguars are usually larger and of sturdier build and its behavioral and habitat characteristics are closer to those of the Tiger. While dense rain forest is its preferred habitat, the Jaguar will range across a variety of forested and open terrains. It is strongly associated with the presence of water and is notable, along with the tiger, as a feline that enjoys swimming.




The female Jaguar can weigh anywhere up to over 200 pounds while the much larger males have been recorded to weigh as much as 350 pounds. They can range in length up to 6.5 feet, from the nose to the base of the tail and stand about 2 to 2 1/2 feet tall at the shoulder.

Jaguars are apex predators and largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush hunter.  They have an exceptionally powerful bite, relative to the other big cats. Unlike other big cats that kill by strangulation, Jaguars kill their prey by biting directly through the skull of their victim to deliver a fatal blow. Their diet even include caimans (South American crocodiles).

The Jaguar is a near threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include loss and fragmentation of habitat. While international trade in Jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is still frequently killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in South America.

Wildlife Photography - Back from the High Arctic

I have returned from my photo shoot in Svalbard in the high Arctic. This Norwegian archipelago is about 23,500 square miles and the climate is relatively mild by Arctic standard. Temperature averages around -5 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, as compared to Hudson Bay, which can drop to -40+ degrees.




The warm West Spitsbergen Current and the ice-infested East Greenland Current are the two major currents in Fram Strait, the body of water that lies between Greenland and Svalbard. While the WSC carries warm Atlantic waters north into the Arctic Ocean, the EGC transports cold, fresh water and sea ice south out of the Arctic basin. In this manner, the currents work together to make Fram Strait the northernmost permanently ice-free ocean area in the world.

This time the expedition ship I was on only managed to get as high as Latitude 80 degrees and 12 minutes. The weather was poor to fair, with many foggy and dull days, making wildlife spotting and photography a challenge. Polar bear sightings were few and quite far away. Walrus and whale encounters were not spectacular either. Such is the vicissitudes of a wildlife photo shoot. One is at the mercy of chance, weather and circumstance.

Summer in the high Arctic is a lean time for Polar bears. Sea ice is breaking up fast and most of the seals are in the water and that makes hunting them almost impossible. Most bears try to conserve energy by doing as little as possible, resting and sleeping most of the day. I am just beginning to look over my photos. Wildlife Photography - Photo Safari in the high Arctic

I am off to the high Arctic on a photo shoot in Svalbard, an archipelago deep inside the Arctic Circle, in the Land of the Midnight Sun. In the summer months, there is 24 hour daylight and the weather and seas are unpredictable. It can range from a blustery, snowy day with 40+ knots winds to sunny, T-shirt weather the next. 



The wildlife in Svalbard is diverse. There is a population of about 3,000 Polar bears on the islands, together with indigenous herds of Reindeer. Arctic foxes, Atlantic Walruses, many species of whales, dolphins, seals and pelagic birds can be found among the ice floes, cliffs and numerous islands and coves.





The erratic pattern of ice floes and weather conditions will be a challenge for the ship's captain and my equipment but the Arctic scenery, replete with glaciers and ice cliffs are so spectacular, I will be too engrossed to worry about the rough seas and temperatures, as long as I am properly dressed.

Canon EOS-1D X - Firmware 2.0.3 Explained

The Canon EOS-1D X has been available for about two years this July. I have picked this camera as the best DSLR body on the market two years in a row. Since its announcement, there has been many improvements to the world of high tech camera equipment - the DIGIC 6 processor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF system and newer sensor technology, just to name a few.

Nikon recently released their D4S camera. Canon, in anticipation of the move, released Firmware 2.0.3 to enhance the capabilities and features of the EOS-1D X back in January. In my opinion, the camera is holding its own against the newer Nikon but Canon engineers are busy working on the Mk II version. Below are three videos put out by Canon Digital Learning Center, describing the additional features of Firmware 2.0.3. First video is a bit tedious and the presenter can be a tad over zealous with his generous hype but I agree with most of his statements. The EOS-1D X is not a perfect camera, sometimes it is unnecessarily complicated but on the whole, it is a very impressive piece of equipment. I only wish the sensor were an APS-H. This would give me that extra reach. As a wildlife photographer, one cannot have too much focal length and I am not a big fan of extenders except in the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS lens.

Wildlife Photography - African and Asian Elephants

An emotive and iconic animal, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest living terrestrial mammal, with the largest recorded individual reaching a height of over 12 feet at the shoulder and weighing over 10 tons. The African elephant’s brain is bigger than any other land animal and its skull is exceptionally large, having evolved to support the trunk and the heavy teeth and jaws. The skull comprises up to 25 percent of the elephant’s total body weight.

The Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) are smaller than their African savannah relatives and have many other physical features that set them apart. Their ears are smaller and their back is more rounded so that the crown of the head is the highest point of the body. Elephants are unusual among mammals in that they continue to grow throughout their life, although the rate at which they grow slows after they reach sexual maturity. 




The African elephant occurs largely in eastern, southern and western Africa while their Asian cousins are now restricted to isolated fragments in parts of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Laos, Malaysia and Indonesia. The greatest threat to the population of the world's elephant's is the ivory trade, conducted primarily in Asia, which leads to the relentless poaching and slaughter. The secondary threat is the loss of their habitat due to human encroachment.

Photographing Elephants is one of the most enjoyable experience for me because they are very similar to humans. They have a social structure, a tight family bond and a life span of about 80 years. A female Elephant has a gestation period of over one and a half years and gives birth to one calf. She is a devoted mother and spends all her time taking care of her offspring. The young are inquisitive and playful.

Wildlife Photography - Reflections On India

I have just returned from a wildlife photo shoot in India. It is almost impossible for a traveler not to be astonished and impressed by this fascinating country. India is the largest democracy in the world, has the second largest population and by some estimates, will have the third largest economy by the end of the next decade. Very few nations have such a chaotic and creative burst of cultures, religions, races and tongues.

With a population of almost 1.2 billion people, there is no one single Indian culture but enough similarities unite its people. 14 different languages and myriad of dialects are spoken but English is the major language of trade and politics. India has 7 major religions, 6 main ethnic groups and many celebrations and holidays throughout the year.

Indian culture revolves around religion and its practice permeates into many aspects of daily life. Hinduism is the dominant faith, but there are also Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Bahai, and many more. The American humorist, Mark Twain said it best - "So far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked."

The wildlife of India is just as diverse as its landscapes and people. There are Bengal Tigers, Asiatic Lions, Leopards, Gaurs (largest Bovine in the world), Indian Rhinos and Elephants, Crocodiles, Sloth Bears, Wild dogs plus many more species. There were even Cheetahs but sadly, they were driven to extinction with periodic plans for re-introduction. In addition, there are over 1,100 species of birds and countless insects and flora. Altogether the country is smaller in size than Africa, India has just as many captivating wildlife for me to photograph.

Currently, the most endangered species is the Bengal Tiger. There are about 1,500 animals left, depending on who is doing the estimate. They are scattered in over 50 reserves across India and relentless poaching and human encroachment have driven the tigers close to extinction. Project Tiger, a program launched by the late Prime Minister, Indira Ghandi in 1973, is the primary vehicle charged to protect their natural habitats and prevent these magnificent animals from sliding into extinction, like their cousins, the Indian Cheetah.

There are fierce debates as to what level of human intervention and tourism are appropriate for the remaining tigers and the Indian Supreme Court has recently banned the practice of using elephants to approach tigers for tourism. My own feeling is there can be an appropriate balance between conservation and responsible tourism but the practices have to managed carefully by conscientious authorities.

Photographing wildlife in India's national parks is not an easy feat. The only feasible means is by 4 wheel drive Jeeps and the trails are rough and very bouncy. It takes many hours to find any of the 'Indian Big 5' and many more days to get any decent shots from different angles, if one is lucky. However, the richness of her people and the diverse landscapes, fauna and flora will keep bringing me back to this incredible country. Wildlife Photography - A Passage To India

I am off to India for a photo shoot. Will be visiting a few Tiger reserves and doing some travel photography as well. In some of the national parks, I will be on the backs of Indian elephants looking for tigers. This adds another level of experience to an already exciting safari journey.

Looking forward to finding out more about how these magnificent animals are fighting to avoid the relentless slaughter from poachers and smugglers with the help of the National Tiger Conservation Authority. I will be unable to keep in touch because there are no Internet access in the jungles and countryside. Have to wait till I return in late March to reconnect. Canon EOS-7D Mk II Launching In Q2 2014

The Canon EOS-7D Mk II is one of the most anticipated cameras this year (including yours truly). It was spotted during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Canon has deployed many of their latest gear there and the testers were covered by Non Disclosure Agreements (NDA) so there are no firm specifications leaked about the camera. Canon may not even call its replacement - EOS-7D Mk II, but they will have enough prototypes out there to help them gain all the insights from field testing.

The EOS-1D Mk IV camera with its excellent APS-H 1.3x sensor was discontinued a while back, leaving a void in the cropped frame, professional camera space. I am looking for a semi-pro body with the extra reach since I am not a big fan of extenders. The current 7D is an excellent piece of equipment and my pick, four years in a row as the best value in APS-C camera.

Nikon announced their top-of-the-line D4s camera this week, to a some what underwhelmed response. Canon will be introducing a couple of Pixma Pro printers next month. There is a chance they may bring forward the release date of the EOS-7D Mk II to March, but most probably it will be the second quarter of 2014, with delivery starting late Q2 or early Q3. The current EOS-7D has the most advanced AF system of all the Canon APS-C bodies. The Achilles heel of the camera is its mediocre high ISO performance.

Possible specifications of the EOS-7D Mk II camera :

  • 20 MP APS-C Sensor ( probably similar to the EOS-70D )
  • Dual DIGIC 5+ processors ( Excellent for speed processing )
  • 10 fps ( Most welcomed by me ) 
  • Dual Memory Card Slots ( One CF and one SD. I prefer 2 CF slots )
  • 61 AF Points ( Perhaps the same as the EOS-1D X )
  • 3.2″ LCD monitor ( Excellent for reviewing images )
  • Similar build quality as the EOS-5D Mk III with much better weather proofing
  • GPS and WiFi ( Not necessary, in my opinion ) 
  • ISO Performance may equal EOS-5D Mk III ( Most welcomed by me )
  • Latest video features similar to, probably beating the EOS-70D model
  • Selling price between $2,000 to $2,199. Not finalized yet

The features of the new camera will be firmed up very soon and the feedback from the Olympics are crucial in determining the final specifications. Canon Offers White Balance Tips When Photographing In Snow

Now, Canon Digital Learning Center has come out with an article offering white balance tips when photographing in snow. Below is an excerpt from their site :

"As photographers, our goal is to recreate the scene before us using both light and color. As advanced as digital cameras are these days, they don’t yet match the complexity of the human mind so we have to work with a few technical limitations when trying to record a scene as our eye sees it. Snow covered winter landscapes, in particular, can present some very specific challenges when it comes to getting accurate looking colors.

If you’ve ever looked at one of your winter images and thought that things look a little blue, then you’ve discovered one of the challenges of photographing snow: getting the right white balance or color temperature. White balance is a fundamental camera setting that adjusts color rendition to give a neutral appearance, without any obvious overall color tints or shifts. Cameras come with several White Balance presets (Daylight, Tungsten, Flash, etc.), but difficulties can arise when there are mixed light sources all adding their own color cast. In fact, it doesn’t even need to be a direct source either because all reflected light will have a color cast that’s dependent on the color of the object the light just bounced off of. If there are objects in your image (quite likely!) then you’ve got multiple color casts, in some way.

One measure of color in an image is Color Temperature. A simplified, non-technical description for photography purposes is that Color Temperature is a numerical scale, based on Degrees Kelvin, that defines the level of amber or blue in daylight and other light sources. Noontime sunlight is rated at about 5500 degrees Kelvin; warm, amber sources like sunsets or tungsten household bulbs can be 3000K or less; and scenes with excessive blue tonalities (like shaded areas on a clear, sunny day) can be anywhere from 7000K to 10000K. Most Canon EOS cameras offer a "K" white balance option, which can be a very precise way to pre-set white balance when shooting in daylight or tungsten illumination. (Please note that Kelvin WB is not available on EOS Rebel models.)

White balance presets are a good starting point, but they aren’t always perfect – the preset “Sunlight,” for example, sounds as though it would be perfect on a sunny day and it’s been standardized to a temperature of 5500K. But the reality is that sunlight color temperature varies based on time of day, atmospheric conditions, your altitude and many other factors. For my typical sunny snow images, I can end up using a White Balance that’s anywhere between 5000K and 9000K during what I would call “daytime.” If I were to include sunrise and sunset shoots, we’d be stretching the range from about 3000K to well north of 12000K. If you used standard White Balance presets during the “Golden Hour” (the first and last hour of the day’s sunlight), you could end up neutralizing that beautiful light that photographers are always lusting after. Presets should be looked at as a good starting point and an excellent way to learn more about the behavior of different light sources, but they are rarely a perfect answer.

Because most scenes contain a variety of color casts, there’s always going to be some compromise – that means that not all objects will be 100% accurate if we can only set a single temperature. Most of the time, in normal images, this compromise is imperceptible but the problem with winter images is that our brains know that snow it white!

If you look at a snowy scene, it’s likely to contain a lot of shadows caused by mountains and trees, for example. The snow in direct sunlight has a color cast that is one temperature, but the shadow has a vastly different temperature because it’s made up entirely of light that’s been bounced off other surrounding objects, such as the sky or snow itself. The human mind is incredibly powerful and because it knows that snow is white, it corrects our own vision of the scene to compensate for this. To us, snow always looks white. In the camera, though, we can only set one White Balance. Which is it to be?

If you set your camera to Auto White Balance (AWB), then you’re asking the camera to make that decision. In most cases, cameras these days have become good at measuring the variety of temperatures in a scene and creating an average. Every now and again when one cast is more predominant than the other, you’ll get the situation where your snowy images can look too blue. This will usually happen in a snowy image where there is a lot of shadow, but it can also look blue during daylight on a sunny day with blue skies when that color gets reflected in the snow.

How do I solve it? Firstly, I always opt to shoot in RAW because it gives you the option to adjust the White Balance later in your chosen editing software. I try and get it right in-camera when I can, but sometimes rapidly changing light makes it impractical. For example, if I’m hanging out of the side of a helicopter following a skier down a steep line in Alaska, then it’s simply not possible to be simultaneously tweaking White Balance. Another example would be in an uncontrolled situation like a sporting event where there is rapidly changing weather, typically moving clouds. In these situations, I set the camera to Auto White Balance and I use the “Eyedropper” tool in software like Canon’s Digital Photo Professional or Adobe Lightroom. The “Eyedropper” tool measures the temperature of one point in the image and sets the White Balance to that setting. As we know, if there are shadows and sunlight areas in the image, then these will be different temperatures so I usually pick a spot representative of the predominant situation in the scene. If it’s mostly shady, I’ll pick that. If it’s mostly direct sunlight with the odd shadow, I’ll pick the snow that’s in the direct light as long as the subject of the image is also in that predominant sector. It’s important that your subject looks accurately colored.

If the situation is much more controlled, like a commercial shoot where color accuracy of a product is of paramount importance, then I aim to get things right in-camera using a Custom White Balance. Readily available digital Gray Cards can be used for a test shot in your light and then set as the source of a Custom White Balance in-camera. Essentially, you’re telling the camera “this is a neutral color in this light.” Gray Cards, or other products such as the ExpoDisc, are relatively small and lightweight to carry around and can save you a lot of headaches. I’ll sometimes make use of a little product called the SpyderCube from Datacolor, as well. This is like a tiny gray card that you can include in a test shot so that you have an accurate neutral gray to use with the color picker later in your software. This works well for portraits in snow, but for action images, it’s not practical to always be in the spot where your athletes are about to be… I’m sure you can see why in some of these example photos!

In the end, sometimes there are compromises to be made when setting White Balance, just as there are with exposure when you choose where to add detail to the shadows at the expense of clipping your highlights. The best way to deal with it is to understand how it all works and why the images can sometimes look too blue in these tricky winter landscapes. If you don’t want to go so far as to set Custom White Balances but would rather not spend time adjusting them on the computer, then try the presets for “Cloudy” (~6500K) and “Shade” (~7500K). Light in the shade is much bluer, so the preset warms it up. If your winter images are looking blue, then this can be a quick fix to the problem. But be wary of this if you have large patches of snow in direct sunlight, as this will render the brighter patches too warm."
