Canon PowerShot G17 Coming Before June?

Canon announced the PowerShot G1 X II  last year and the PowerShot G16 was released in 2013. The G1X II is my favorite PowerShot camera in the lineup and now Canon may be ready to release the PowerShot G17 camera, after the 2015 NAB Show in April and perhaps before mid year.

Possible Specifications :

  •     24-168mm
  •     7x Zoom
  •     f/1.2-2.0 Lens
  •     DIGIC 6+ processor
  •     Larger 1 inch sensor
  •     3.2 inch LCD screen
  •     WiFi and GPS
  •     All magnesium body

The new camera may be slightly bigger and heavier than the G16 and the faster lens and larger sensor will be a welcome improvement in the PowerShot lineup.

Canon Announced Five New PowerShot Cameras For CES 2015

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 5, 2015 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of three new super-zoom cameras to its PowerShot SX line up: the PowerShot SX530 HS, the PowerShot SX710 HS and the PowerShot SX610 HS digital cameras. The company also added two new stylish and compact cameras to its PowerShot ELPH series: the PowerShot ELPH 170 IS and PowerShot ELPH 160 cameras. The PowerShot SX models provide users with high-quality imaging, advanced features and fast focusing, while the PowerShot ELPH models have improved operability to help produce beautiful images and video housed within stylish, slim bodies that can easily fit in a pocket or purse.

“As our customers’ desire for superb imaging devices to help them create amazing images and video grows, Canon U.S.A. is dedicated to providing digital cameras that have the features and functions to easily capture their most important moments,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “With these five new PowerShot digital cameras, Canon hopes that users will capture and share their favorite moments, without compromising image quality.”

The three new PowerShot SX series cameras (the PowerShot SX530 HS, the PowerShot SX710 HS and the PowerShot SX610 HS) feature optical zoom ranges of 50x, 30x and 18x, respectively – making them powerful enough to capture images close-up as well as from a distance. The built-in Wi-Fi® and NFC™ connectivity options in the new PowerShot SX cameras allow users to easily share beautiful images online with family and friends by connecting to a compatible smartphonei, tablet or Wi-Fi enabled computer.

Experiencing the power of a printed image is also easy when users connect and print to a Canon wireless PictBridge certified printer, like the Canon PIXMA MG7520. And for even more convenience, the cameras are compatible with the new Canon Connect Station CS100 – a dedicated device for easy and safe image and video viewing, sharing and storage.

The new PowerShot ELPH 170 IS and PowerShot ELPH 160 digital cameras are easy to take along almost anywhere. Providing users with great imaging quality, the new PowerShot ELPH cameras feature 12x and 8x Optical Zoom lenses, respectively, and 720p HD video – making them perfect for busy parents or an on-the-go college student.

Canon Professional Services In 'Support Matters' Campaign

I have been a wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for 25 years. Over the years, I have used or owned almost all of Canon's film and digital cameras, FD and EF lenses. You can read my recommendation on Canon lens here.

When I am on a photo shoot anywhere in the globe, it is comforting to know there is a world class technical team and center to call upon for advice and support. Unlike the photographers featured in the videos below, I do not have any affiliation with or receive any form of compensation from Canon. Not all of Canon's equipment are the best but they are consistently high performers across the entire product line, backed by excellent customer service. That is why I have stayed with them all these years. You can see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon PowerShot SX60 Camera Review

The Canon PowerShot SX60 was announced on September 15. It is the successor to the high acclaimed SX50 camera. Below is an excerpt of the review from CameraLab. To read the whole article, click here.

Canon SX60 HS review by CameraLabs

The Canon PowerShot SX60 HS is the latest bridge super-zoom in the SX series. Launched in September 2014 it replaces the now two year-old (and enormously popular) SX50 HS. With an eye-watering 65x zoom, Canon has once again exceeded expectations and pushed the boundaries of super-zoom range - indeed you have to wonder how long it'll be before we have to start calling these mega-zooms.

The SX60 HS extends the SX50's 50x range at both ends, with a 35mm equivalent range of 21-1365mm. This isn't an incremental step up, it's a significant increase that will make a real difference to your picture taking, especially at the wide angle end of the scale.

The lens isn't all that's new. The SX60 HS has an updated electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 922k dots, up from the more pedestrian and, for its day, typical 202k EVF of its predecessor. The LCD screen shares the same 922k dot resolution and is again an improvement on the earlier model's 460k dot screen. As before the screen is hinged at the side so can be adjusted to pretty much any angle. At the heart of the PowerShot SX60 HS is Canon's 16.1 Megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, also used in other compacts with the HS suffix. It's paired with Canon's latest Digic 6 processor which endows the new model with, among other things, fast 6.4fps continuous shooting and 1080p60 HD video. The new model retains the Speedlite compatible hot shoe and adds built-in Wifi with NFC so all you need do is tap the SX60 HS with a compatible smartphone to initiate a Wifi connection. It also includes all the usual Canon compact features like Hybrid Auto, Creative shot mode and Creative effects filters as well as Super Slow Motion video.

The SX50 HS and SX40 HS before it were both hugely successful for Canon and they'll be hoping that the SX60 HS is equally popular, but there's plenty of competition in the long range super-zoom market. Though it's now over a year old, the Panasonic FZ70 / FZ72 remains a strong competitor with a 60x range that actually outdoes the SX60 HS with a 20mm equivalent wide angle. Then there's the recently introduced Nikon P600 which also sports a 60x zoom with an equivalent range of 24-1440mm. I've compared the PowerShot SX60 HS against both these popular models. Read on to discover which of them is the best of the long range bridge super-zooms.

Canon PowerShot G7 X vs. Sony RX100 Mk III

Canon PowerShot G7 X and Sony RX100 Mk III cameras

Canon announced the PowerShot G7 X last month. This is currently Canon's top of the line PowerShot model. It may be using the same sensor as the Sony camera since Canon admitted the sensor was not made in house and they will use the 'best' sensor available.

You can read a review and see sample images here. DxOMark has reviewed both cameras and gave the edge to the Canon G7 X. The following video compares the PowerShot G7 X to the Sony RX100 Mk III. It is rather long but may be worthwhile for some to get two men's opinion on two cameras.

Apple iPhone 6 Camera Video Review

Apple announced the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last month. Both phones have a much improved camera and software plus a retina screen display, with a resolution of 1334 x 750 for the former and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 for the latter. Take a look at the DigitalRev video review of the two phones above.

Canon and other camera manufacturers have been losing sales (particularly in the low end) in the last few years. Part of the reason is the much higher quality cameras found in high end smartphones. Some people have decided the photos taken with their smartphones is good enough and the new iPhone 6 will go even further to reinforce that point. Certainly Canon is concerned about the competition from Apple and Samsung's high end phones but my own feeling is their apprehension is misplaced.

I believe those who will trade a high end PowerShot camera for a high end smartphone with camera to take photos are mostly interested in convenience first. Those who are passionate about photography, like yours truly, will own and generally carry both. There may be some overlap between the two groups but by and large, I think they are mostly mutually exclusive.

The best way for Canon and other camera manufacturers to stay competitive is to keep producing high quality, innovative photographic products, like the EOS-7D Mk II camera and cut down on some of the fluff and marketing glitz. Photographers will respond to genuine improvement and not same old technology, wrapped in new camera and lens housing.

Canon 'See Impossible' Marketing Campaign

In recent years, there is no secret high end smartphones, like the newly introduced Apple iPhone 6 with their ever improving, built-in camera, are taking some business away from camera manufacturers. Yesterday, Canon launched a new advertising campaign called “See Impossible” to shift the marketing focus away from products and onto customers’ stories.

Canon’s campaign evolves around a new website that contains a series of videos highlighting how customers are using a whole range of Canon products in their daily lives. A short clip shows how an author used the technology to self-publish her book. In the future, additional content will include stories and testimonials from real life consumers.

I am a wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for 25 years and also own the iPhone 6. To me, the camera on my phone is a convenience, the camera in my hands is a high precision tool. I won't trade one for the other because they both have their place in my life. Of course there are people who don't share my view but many do and keeping one's core and loyal customers is always a good start for any business. Last year, I made some observations and comments for my friends in Japan. My feeling is Canon is listening and will be changing for the better, hopefully.

Canon PowerShot Cameras vs. Apple iPhone 6

Apple announced the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus today. Both phones have a retina screen display, with a resolution of 1334 x 750 for the former and a resolution of 1920 x 1080 for the latter. Since this is a photography blog, I will just concentrate on the camera section of this new phone :

The camera that changed photos now does the same for video.

Every day, people take more photos with iPhone than with any other camera. That’s because the iSight camera makes it so remarkably easy. Now, in addition to its large 1.5-micron pixels and Æ’/2.2 aperture, the world’s most popular camera is packed with new technologies to help everyone take more great photos.

To make it just as easy to shoot amazing video, we added new features like the option to capture 1080p HD at 60 fps, 240-fps slo-mo, and time-lapse video. And you can shoot HD video and then watch the stunning results on the large Retina HD display.

The best way for Canon and other camera manufacturers to stay competitive is to keep producing high quality, innovative photographic products and cut down on some of the fluff and marketing glitz. Photographers will respond to genuine improvement and not same old technology, wrapped in new camera and lens housing. Photokina 2014 is just round the corner. Many manufactures like Zeiss and Hasselblad have already announced new products. Canon is still holding their cards very close to its chest but is expected to announce the EOS-7D Mk II camera some time late this week.

When Is Canon PowerShot SX60 HS IS Coming?

Canon was expected to announce the PowerShot SX60 HS camera with a 100X zoom some time in June. Clearly it did not happen and word is Canon may have experience manufacturing problem. This camera will be the replacement to the popular SX50 model and may come with the new DIGIC 6 processor, a 15MP sensor and a 20-2000mm focal length capability.

With the big Photokina Show just around the corner on September 16 and Canon already has big plans for the show, with the EOS-7D Mk II camera and perhaps the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens on their plate, the PowerShot SX60 HS will probably get a different announcement date. I suspect it will be after the two big aforementioned debut. Who knows, Canon may surprise us all and announce it before the show.

Out in the field, I have come across people with the PowerShot SX50. If the lighting conditions are good and the wildlife is not too far and in the open, one can get a fairly decent photo. There are occasions I have missed my shots by the time I got my equipment out and others have already taken the shots with their SX50 cameras. However, I am just a bit curious about the Image Quality of the upcoming SX60, with an equivalent 2000mm lens all in the palm of my hand. I will give the camera a try out once it is available. Canon Cuts Forecast As Camera Demand Slows

Canon, the world’s largest camera maker, lowered its full-year sales forecast as demand slows amid a consumer shift to smartphones for taking pictures. Late last year, I reported there may be a shakeout coming among mid-tier camera makers due to the challenge of smartphones.

The current dilemma Canon is facing has a lot to do with their sales practices. They launch too many old and uninteresting low end cameras with new, slick marketing programs. On top of that, their high end cameras are priced too 'cheap' and the price-to-performance differential between prosumer and professional models are dropping, tempting users to buy value, instead of performance.

The following is an excerpt from Bloomberg News on Canon's forecast of their business :

Sales are projected to be 3.78 trillion yen ($37 billion) for the current fiscal year, a 2.1 percent cut from the previous forecast. The Tokyo-based company maintained earlier projections for operating profit of 365 billion yen and net income of 240 billion yen.

Smartphones packed with advanced sensors and lenses are winning customers and cutting demand for cheaper compact cameras. Canon, which posted better-than-expected quarterly profit, is counting on sales of office equipment, including a partnership with Hewlett-Packard Co., as it automates more production to reduce costs and revive earnings.

“Demand for compact cameras declined sharply because of smartphones,” Makoto Kikuchi, chief executive officer at Myojo Asset Management Co. in Tokyo, said by phone. “Canon was too aggressive with their SLR sales forecast. People who want them have already bought them.”

Canon rose 0.8 percent to 3,414 yen at the close in Tokyo trading, before the earnings announcement. The stock has added 2.5 percent this year after three straight annual declines.

Net income in the second quarter rose to 80.8 billion yen, beating the 62.4 billion yen average of six analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Operating profit was 110.5 billion yen.

“The forecast cut is a reflection of slower than expected economic recovery,” Chief Financial Officer Toshizo Tanaka said today. “An increase in sales of high-end color copiers and printers has pushed up profitability.”

Slumping Demand

Canon sold 2.3 million compact cameras in the second quarter, a 36 percent decrease from a year earlier, according to Tanaka. Sales of the company’s single-lens reflex cameras dropped to 1.7 million from 2.1 million.

Industrywide digital camera shipments declined about 35 percent from a year earlier in the first five months of 2014, according to the Camera & Imaging Products Association.

“The company needs to find a new product for growth,” Hisashi Moriyama, an analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Tokyo, said by phone before the earnings were announced. “Single-lens reflex cameras didn’t sell as well as expected.”

Canon forecast an exchange rate of $1 for 100 yen and 1 euro for 135 yen for the third quarter.

Canon cut its annual sales forecast for compact digital cameras to 9.5 million units from the previous target of 10.5 million units. The SLR camera sales projection was pared to 7 million units, from an earlier 7.6 million units.

MELVILLE, N.Y., July 29, 2014 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced two new compact, super-zoom cameras: the PowerShot SX520 HS and the PowerShot SX400 IS digital cameras. Designed to give users the versatility and telephoto reach they need to capture subjects from far distances, these new cameras are packed with impressive features. The new PowerShot SX520 HS digital camera includes a high-powered 42x Optical Zoom lens (equivalent to 24-1008mm) and the Canon HS SYSTEM for clear sharp images and Full HD Video. “Our goal is to provide people who are passionate about photography with the imaging tools they need to capture the moments that inspire them,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The PowerShot SX520 HS and PowerShot SX400 IS digital cameras offer users features that help produce high quality-images and video with ease allowing them to capture their most creative shots.”

Building on the features of the PowerShot SX510 HS digital camera, the PowerShot SX520 HS digital camera incorporates a 42x Optical Zoom with Canon’s Optical Image Stabilization, ideal for active families that want to take high-quality close-up shots of their children’s soccer game or dance recitals. In addition to featuring a powerful optical zoom range, the SX520 HS digital camera combines a 16 Megapixeli High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 4+ Image Processor to create the Canon HS SYSTEM allowing for excellent low-light performance.

Giving users the ability to capture life in motion, the camera features a dedicated movie button so users can easily record 1080p Full HD video utilizing the camera’s full 42x optical zoom capability. The camera also features an enhanced grip for added handling comfort. Additionally, the camera’s Intelligent IS automatically chooses from one of eight modes to help optimize image stabilization for virtually shake-free images in various shooting conditions. The camera’s High Speed AF allows users to achieve fast autofocusing speeds to help capture every shot with ease. The PowerShot SX520 HS digital camera’s advanced Zoom Framing Assist feature intelligently controls the lens, making it easy to locate the main subject by zooming out, and then zooming back in quickly and automatically for dramatic close-ups with face detection where applicable.

Upgraded from its predecessor, the PowerShot SX520 HS digital camera features Canon’s Creative Shot mode that uses a combination of lighting, color and composition from the original image to create unique, artistic images. Smart AUTO technology selects 32 different pre-defined scenes for still shots and 21 scenes for video without the need to switch modes, making it possible to take beautiful images and video in a variety of situations. The Hybrid AUTO mode featured in the PowerShot SX520 HS camera creates a beautifully stabilized HD video clip (up to approximately four seconds) every time a user shoots a still image, then compiles the clips into a single movie that forms a “highlighted reel” for the day. This new camera is equipped with a built-in mini-HDMI port that makes it easy to connect to an HD TV set at home or on the road so everyone can comfortably enjoy viewing the footage.
