Canon's upcoming EOS-1D X Mark III, EOS-90D, EOS-R Pro, EOS M5 Mk II, EOS M6 Mk II cameras

There are many rumors on the Internet the last few months about Canon's upcoming camera announcements, so I will give you a summary and my take on the current situation.

EOS-1D X Mark III should be announced by Q1, 2020 and shipped in time for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, 2020. I will definitely add this camera to my equipment bag for wildlife photography and use my current EOS-1D X Mark II as a backup body. The Mark III camera will remain Canon's top-of-the-line body for the foreseeable future.

EOS-90D will become a reality by the end of August 2019. This body may replace the much-loved EOS-7D Mark II and the EOS-80D cameras. I will also add this body to my inventory when I go on wildlife tours because of the extra reach an APS-C sensor provides.

EOS-R Pro debut is expected before the Summer Olympics in 2020 but the date is more fluid at this time. Many of my readers know I am not a fan of the current EOS-R. If this new pro mirrorless camera lives up to my requirement, I may add it to my inventory. Currently, I do not own any mirrorless body.

EOS M5 Mark II and EOS M6 Mark II may come before the end of 2019. This is a good selling line of cameras for Canon, especially in Asia so they have every intention to keep the new models competitive and load them up with powerful functions and desirable features. I am not interested in APS-C mirrorless bodies.

Possible specifications for the EOS M5 and EOS M6 Mark II cameras :

  • 30+MP APS-C CMOS sensor (new sensor technology for higher dynamic range)
  • DIGIC 8+ Imaging Processor
  • 4K up to 30p (with no crop or 1.3x no pixel binning crop), Full HD up to 180p
  • No Canon Log but new Movie Picture Style
  • Dual Pixel AF Focus Guide
  • New Selfie mode and Vlog mode
  • Enhanced Movie IS
  • Burst rate of up to 16 fps (with AE/AF)
  • RAW Burst mode at 30 fps (with AE/AF)
  • Dual Pixel AF with expanded area
  • Eye AF (tracking possible)
  • Electronic shutter 1/16000s
  • Focus Bracketing
  • Supports external electronic viewfinder
  • USB-C charge power supply

Canon to introduce IBIS on their upcoming EOS-90D and EOS-1D X Mark III cameras

Canon is expected to finally introduce In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) in their upcoming DSLR camera(s). Perhaps it will be in the EOS-90D or the EOS-1D X Mark III, some time in late 2019 or Q1, 2020.

Their IBIS patent filing with the US Patent Office can be viewed here. Keep checking back for the latest information and development.

Canon EOS-7D Mark III and EOS-90D may morphed into a single camera

Just back from my wildlife photography tour of India. You can follow my travels on FacebookTwitterInstagram and see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com.

Canon announced the expected entry level EOS RP, full frame mirrorless camera recently and is planning to announce at least 6 new RF lenses in the next few months. You can download the Owner Manual here and read it before you buy. As I mentioned before, unless Canon comes out with an EOS-1 equivalent type of full frame mirrorless camera, your truly has no interest in this line of equipment.

As my readers know, I am waiting for the successor of the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS-7D Mark II bodies to arrive some time in late 2019. The EOS-80D and EOS-7D Mark II successors will probably be morphed into a single camera. Frankly it's about time. There are too many models in Canon's lineup it is becoming a difference without a distinction.

In my opinion, the should only be four EOS line of cameras - EOS-1, EOS-5, EOS-7 and EOS-R. In addition, the PowerShot line can fill out the remainder. Anything more than that is unnecessary and add more confusion than differentiation.

It is early days yet to speculate on the new camera's features but I am hoping for the following specs for the EOS-7D Mark III. Keep checking back for the latest information :

  • Low to Mid 20MP sensor
  • Dual Digic 8 processors
  • 10 fps (12 fps possible but unlikely)
  • 4K+ video @ 30fps and 1080p @ 60fps
  • Pop up flash and WiFi. GPS and WiFi  more likely
  • 2 memory slots, one SD and one CFast (Unlikely. Dual SD more likely)
  • AF points to below 100 with more cross-type points
  • Increase in high ISO and Dynamic Range performance
  • Addition of illuminated buttons on the back panel

More Canon Cameras and Lenses Showed Up For Certification

As reported in my earlier post, in addition to the new cameras we are expecting from Canon in the next 6 to 12 months, there are additional EF lenses and cameras that have applied for certification to various agencies.

DS 126721 (EOS Body)

Interchangeable lens camera (DSLR or full frame mirrorless) with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built-in. The camera uses the LP-E6 / LP-E6N battery.

PC 2352 (PowerShot)

This digital camera is made in Japan with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built-in.

There are also five (5) EF Interchangeable lenses. One of them is most likely to be the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM. Two of the lenses may be destined for a kit, perhaps the EOS-80D Mark II or EOS-7D Mark III camera. The remaining two lenses appear to be the 'L' grade professional model.

New Canon Camera Bodies Showed Up For Certification

Canon is expected to announce a high end, full frame mirrorless camera, the EOS-90D and EOS-7D Mark III in the next 6 to 12 months.

A few Canon camera bodies have shown up as the company filed registration papers with certification authorities in various countries.

Canon DS126721 is registered with overseas certification bodies. This is most probably a new Rebel camera with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

Two DSLR test cameras are code named K436 (EOS-80D Mark II or EOS-90D?) and K437 (EOS-7D Mark III?). Additional mirrorless cameras are code named K424, K433 and EC 811. All the new cameras come with the DIGIC 8 processors.

K424 will be a 30MP full frame mirrorless camera and announcement is expected in late 2018 or early 2019. K333 will also be a full frame mirrorless camera but with less features and a lower price.
EC 811 may be the EOS-M5 Mark II APS-C mirrorless camera.

Sadly, I am not convinced the upcoming high end, Canon full frame mirrorless camera will fit my needs unless it comes with the EF mount. These are early days and there is little point in further speculation. Keep checking back for the latest information and development.

Canon EOS-90D Camera Will Be A Big Leap Forward

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer, utilizing Canon equipment for almost three decades and traversing the globe on wildlife photography shoots. Recently, I came back from a trip to the Okavango Delta and Chobe River. You can follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter, see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

As I travel to remote places, I am usually out of WiFi range and lack contact with the photography world and news but gain valuable field experiences in testing many Canon gear and equipment.

The bread-n-butter model of Canon's DSLR lineup is the EOS-80D. It has been over 2 years since this camera was announced. My sources informed me the replacement model, EOS-90D will be 'a big leap forward'.

This may mean a lot of things to many photographers but one thing is certain. Canon has been aware the video performance of their latest cameras may not be perceived as competitive as some Sony models, for instance. This does not bother me because my philosophy is as a still photographer, my equipment should be the best in class in one thing, and not try to be best in multiple classes. For those who prefer the best in videography, they should go for the EOS Cinema series of cameras.

Nevertheless, perception is everything these days and Canon is known for a slow, methodical approach to introducing new products and features. Recently, Canon's CEO has expressed his desire to speed up the company's response to new innovations and developments.

My best guess is the EOS-90D may be announced some time in early 2019, perhaps around the CES or CP+ Show. Find out what to expect from Canon in terms of product announcement in the next 12 to 18 months. Keep checking back for the latest development and information.

When Will Canon Announce The EOS-7D Mark III Camera

I am back from my East Africa Wildlife Photo Tour. It was a great trip with many sightings and photo opportunities. Time to process my photos and return to writing this blog. While I was away, there were a few interesting pieces of photography news that caught my eye.

It seems Canon may be hesitating on annoucing the EOS-7D Mark III in 2018. I still think there is a slightly less than even chance they may release the camera this year, since the Nikon D500 is challenging the EOS-7D Mark II in a very serious way. If Canon decides not to release the Mark III in 2018, they will have to release a major firmware upgrade to the current model, like they did with the EOS-7D back in 2012.

The EOS-90D will appear before the EOS-7D Mark III if the decision is made to delay its introduction. Also expect Canon to announce more Rebel series cameras before the CP+ Show on March 1 in Yokohama, Japan.

Things are moving rapidly right now in Canon's labs and board room. They are planning to make big announcements in the next couple of years, from the full frame EF mount mirrorless camera to the Super Telephoto lens upgrade and more high end Diffractive Optics glass. All this is to culminate and capture the world's photographers attention leading up to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Check back often to find out the latest development.
