Canon to add 24p 4K recording to Canon EOS 90D, EOS RP & EOS M6 Mark II cameras




In response to feedback from customers about some of their recently launched EOS and PowerShot models, Canon plans to introduce 24p mode (23.98fps) for movie recording via a series of future firmware updates for select models. After the firmware updates are downloaded it will be possible to shoot 24p (23.98fps) in 4K and Full HD for the select models.

The first models to benefit will be the EOS 90D and EOS RP at the end of October. The PowerShot G7X Mark III and G5X Mark II will follow at the end of 2019 and the EOS M6 Mark II during the first half of 2020.

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 1, 2016 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the XC15 4K Video Camcorder, a 4K UHD digital video camcorder for professional use that achieves high-image quality with a lightweight, compact body.

The new Canon XC15, which builds on the XC10 4K UHD digital video camcorder announced in April 2015, enables shooting with an external microphone through an XLR input and features the selection of visual-expression “Look” modes, including modes that allow it to match the look of other Canon professional cameras, making it ideal for use as a “B”-camera as well as for media and video-content productions.

The Canon XC15 ships with the MA-400 microphone adapter that, when attached, enables shooting with XLR-input microphones used in a wide range of media and content-creation applications. As a result, the camcorder supports the production of content that combines both high-image quality and high-sound quality with reduced noise. The MA-400 is also compatible with the EOS C300 Mark II camera.

Thanks to its high-sensitivity one-inch CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV 5 image processing platform with high calculation-processing power, the new XC15 is capable of capturing high-image quality and low-noise 4K UHD video. Additionally, the camcorder features a compact, lightweight body design, measuring approximately 5.0 x 4.1 x 4.8 inches (WxHxD) and weighs approximately 2.1 pounds while also sporting a 10x optical zoom lens1, which facilitates shooting in confined spaces and environments that demand mobility.

Canon XC15 Consumer Grade Camcorder Coming Soon




The Canon XC10 4K camcorder was announced in April 2015. Designed for the consumer market, the camera did not garner many favorable reviews. Now Canon is expecting to give it another try soon.

The new model will be called XC15 and may be announced at the same time with the C700 camcorder, ahead of the big IBC on September 1, 2016. The professional grade C700 may be equipped with a Super 35mm sensor capable of shooting videos exceeding 4K with dynamic range of about 15 stops. It will support anamorphic lens and the price will be quite high, perhaps in the $30,000 range.

Canon Prosumer Mirrorless Camera With 4K Video Coming





I have been reporting for some time now Canon's plans to finally get serious about their mirrorless camera line. It is no secret that Sony is ahead of Canon in this field but may not be for too much longer. Even Leica has introduced a full frame mirrorless camera last year, ahead of Canon.

My sources told me Canon will announce the EOS-M4 camera first and then the higher end, full frame mirrorless camera with 4K video some time in the second half of 2016, perhaps around the big Photokina Show in Cologne, Germany in August. This should not be a surprise to most people since Canon has been quite 'vocal' about their ambition since last year.

Why Are Some Canon Lens 'White' In Color?




Off White color paint first appeared on Canon lenses in 1976 on the FD 600mm f/4.5 and FD 800mm f/5.6 lens. Why are some Canon 'L' lens painted Off White while others are black in color?

According to Canon, the technical reason is : Heat Reduction. Lenses contain many glass elements. These optics expand with heat, over time. Large lenses contain more and larger elements and heat expansion can bring a lens close to the limits of its design tolerances. A lighter surface reflects sunlight and helps to keep the lens cooler. In shorter lenses, the amount of glass expansion is smaller and usually do not cause a problem.

For outdoor sports and wildlife photography, being exposed to the harsh rays of the sun for long periods of time can cause damaging heat expansion. The lighter color of the lens helps to reduce overheating and protects the internal optics and image sharpness of the glass.

A number of Canon's black colored lenses also have a heat-related feature. A lens that can focus past its infinity mark allows the glass to expand when shooting under hot conditions.

Over the years, Nikon has resisted going to the lighter color but Sony has started manufacturing their high end glass with 'white' paint as well. The REALiS 4K500ST also offers a Genuine Canon 4K lens and a robust collection of advanced professional setting features, including Marginal Focus which helps ensure content projected on the peripheral portions of domed surfaces remains in focus.

At only 38.8 pounds this model also offers one of the most compact and lightweight form factors of a high brightness 4K Projector. Advanced Optics, LCOS and Image Processing Technologies

At the core of the Canon REALiS 4K500ST projector’s highly detailed 4K resolution display capabilities and versatile performance features is the integration of advanced Canon optical, LCOS and image processing technologies.
The new Canon REALiS 4K500ST has a suggested list price of $54,990 and is scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers by April 2016.

Optics

The 4K500ST projector comes equipped with a specially designed Genuine Canon 4K short focus wide zoom lens and throw ratio of 1.0 – 1.3:1, allowing it to project a 10 foot. wide image from an approximate distance of only 10 foot. This projection lens is the first to possess advanced spherical focus capabilities derived from Canon’s renowned L-Series EF camera lenses which is distinguished by a bold red ring around the outer barrel. The lens delivers superb performance due to such sophisticated Canon optical technologies as ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass, aspherical lens elements and super spectra multi lens coatings. Advanced Canon optical technology in the REALiS 4K500ST is also present in its next-generation AISYS (Aspectual Illumination System) Optical Engine. This unique engine helps ensure the projector delivers an ideal combination of both brightness (up to 5000 Lumens) and contrast ratio (up to 2500:1), while also helping the projector maintain a small form factor. The 4K500ST is the newest member of the REALiS Projector series which all feature Canon’s LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) Technology with AISYS-enhancement. This advanced technology is renowned for delivering virtually seamless images with outstanding color reproduction, and low-latency playback for improved display of video content. In addition to offering ultra high resolution of 4096 x 2400, the REALiS 4K500ST is capable of projecting other popular 4K resolutions such as the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) standard of 4096 x 2160 as well as Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) of 3840 x 2160.

Image Processing

The REALiS 4K500ST also integrates powerful dual image processing engines that execute such complex tasks as smooth reproduction of uncompressed 4K video at 60 or 30 fps, and two upscaling technology options (BiCubic and Canon’s unique Shape Trace) to optimize 2K video and other non-native 4K resolution content.

Latest Info on Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Camera


Canon EOS-1D X Mark II camera?



The current EOS-1D X camera has been my pick as the best full frame DSLR camera for sports and wildlife photography over three years in a row. According to the latest information I have received, the long awaited EOS-1D X Mark II model will be equipped with 4K video. That indicates to me Canon feels Nikon will definitely include 4K video in their soon to be announced top-of-the-line D5 camera. They also want to make sure SonyLeica and Nikon are not the only companies with a full frame camera capable of 4K video.

In order to support 4K video and other improved features and function, Canon will probably break its usual habit and equip the new camera with their latest processor - DIGIC 7. Up to now, Canon has always introduced their newest processors on the lower end models like the Powershot cameras first. The DIGIC 6 was a case in point. On top of that, the Mark II model will probably come with dual CFast card slots to handle the added processing power and vast amount of data. This means for many owners of the new DSLR, especially those who plan to use the 4K video feature a lot, they will have to buy a whole new supply of more expensive CFast memory cards.

My readers know I am a wildlife photographer. After resisting for many months, I have finally and reluctantly replaced my faithful full frame Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III camera with the EOS-5Ds. The main reason is the super high resolution 50MP sensor and the flexibility of the EOS-5Ds to take photos in the 1.3x and 1.6x crop mode. These advantages offset the disadvantage of its slow 5 fps burst rate. My main 'complaint' of the EOS-1D X is its relative modest 18 MP sensor does not offer too many pixels for post processing cropping and I am not a big fan of extenders. Still keeping my eyes open for the upcoming EOS-5D Mark IV. Should be announced after the EOS-1D X Mark II.

A combination of the EOS-5Ds, EOS-7D Mark II and the upcoming EOS-1D X Mark II cameras will be the main bodies in my equipment bag. I have many global photo shoots coming up in 2016 and will put the EOS-5Ds and EOS-1D X Mark II through many real world testing and write a comprehensive report on these cameras in the next few months.

Nikon D5 Coming To CES 2016 in Las Vegas?



A few days ago, Nikon officially announced the development of the D5 camera. End of story. No more information was provided. Their top-of-the-line D4 camera was announced at the CES in 2012.

Perhaps Nikon is deliberately coy about the D5 announcement to generate more excitement. If history is any guide, they may just announced the D5 at the CES 2016 in January in Las Vegas. Canon is expected to announce their EOS-1D X Mark II camera after Nikon, perhaps in mid Q1, 2016.

The rumored Nikon D5 specs :

  • New 20MP FX sensor
  • New focusing module with larger coverage and 153 AF points
  • Native high ISO of 102,400
  • 15 fps
  • Body design similar to the D4s
  • 4K video 60/30fps
  • Full HD slow motion

My readers know I have picked the EOS-1D X camera as the best full frame DSLR body three years in a row for sports and wildlife photography. Although the Mark II is scheduled to come out in a few short months, not everyone needs or wants to upgrade to the latest and greatest. There is a seller on eBay selling the 1DX for $3,899. The current model is a fine camera and at almost half the price of the new body, it is really a bargain. I expect the EOS-1D X Mark II to list for just below $7,000.

The current EOS-1D X camera has been my pick as the best full frame DSLR camera for sports and wildlife photography three years in a row. The long awaited EOS-1D X Mk II model may come with 4K video. If Canon decides to include this feature, I feel it will be a mistake because it can distract from the raison d'etre of the camera, namely to be the best DSLR camera on the market for still photography.

Canon already experimented with the EOS-1D C camera, basically an EOS-1D X body, combined with enhanced video capabilities. The camera met with very limited success, especially when there are camcorders like the CinemaEOS C300 Mk II that can do a much better job at shooting videos. Canon marked down the price of the EOS-1D C and I expect them to discontinue this model some time in 2016. Keep checking back for the latest news and developments.

First class 4K image performance

The UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) and UHD DIGISUPER 90 (UJ90x9B) are part of Canon’s evolving 2/3” 4K lens line-up and join the recently launched CJ12ex4.3B in the range. Canon Developing Lightweight 4K Projector

TOKYO, September 1, 2015 - Canon Inc. announced today that it is developing an LCOS projector capable of displaying 5,000 lumen video and still images at a resolution of 4,096 x 2,400 pixels, a level of definition that surpasses the 4,096 x 2,160 pixel-resolution of 4K digital cinema.

Tracing its beginnings to the movie industry, 4K-resolution content has been gaining traction in the broadcasting industry. Amid ongoing advances in image quality and definition made possible by the introduction of a growing number of 4K production tools, Canon is leveraging its proprietary optical technologies to make its entry into the 4K projector market in 2016.

In addition to growing demand for high-resolution, high-quality imaging performance, there is an increased need for projectors that enable projection from close-range installation locations and offer compatibility with a variety of installation environments to facilitate use in such settings as museums with limited available space, driving and flight simulators, and on the design scene. In response to these needs, Canon is developing the 4K projector as a new model within its Power Projector (REALiS and XEED in other regions) series that not only achieves high brightness and high resolution, but also has a compact and lightweight body to accommodate a range of installation environments.

Equipped with a high-definition 4,096 x 2,400 pixel LCOS panel, the Canon 4K projector under development will support the projection of high-definition content that exceeds the resolution offered by 4K digital cinema. While increases in brightness performance for projectors commonly require larger lamps and cooling systems, resulting in increases in projector body size, Canon’s proprietary AISYS optical system delivers bright 5,000 lumens performance while making possible significant reductions in body size and weight. Additionally, the projector will feature a newly developed 4K wide zoom lens capable of projecting large images from a short throw distance, as well as an optical focusing function that enables the projection of images on curved-surface screens.

Through the further enhancement of its Power Projector series lineup, Canon will strive to respond to the diverse needs of users.

“Battle of the Ages,” shot on the recently announced Canon XC10 4K digital camcorder, is an action-packed comedy from YouTube filmmaker Scott Winn. Riffing on the 1980s crime drama trope, “Battle of the Ages” features two young thugs who learn the hard way that appearances can be deceiving and age is nothing but a number. 

Scott captured his fearless cast of three professional parkour athletes through an exhilarating chase and an epic fight scene with the XC10 mounted on a Freefly MoVI M5. They also mounted the XC10 on a DJI Spreading Wings S1000 drone with a MoVI gimbal to get a bird’s eye view of all the action. You can see a review of the camera here.
