Magic Lantern hacked into Canon EOS-5D Mark III firmware  

Magic Lantern, an open source firmware for Canon cameras, and a name we have not mentioned for quite a while, has again hacked into a Canon EOS-5D Mark III's firmware. This time, there is a possibility of shooting lossless 14bit DNG format on EOS DSLR cameras.

The ML programmers has decoded Canon's CR2 files and were able to create a lossless DNG file.
A user by the name of Danne has posted the results on the Magic Lantern board. Keep checking back to find out when this feature may be available on their forum.

• Corrects the level display when the camera is held in the vertical orientation with the hand grip pointing downward.
• Improves the reliability of communication via USB cable when using the Lens Data Registration function with EOS Utility 3.

Firmware Version 1.0.3 is for cameras with firmware Version 1.0.2 or earlier. If your camera's firmware is already Version 1.0.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware. When updating the firmware of your camera, please review the instructions thoroughly before you update the firmware. The firmware update takes approximately 4 minutes.

I am still on my Alaska/Canada annual wildlife photography shoot and is trying to keep my readers abreast of the latest Canon news while I am in between photo shoots. There is extra 'excitement' for me to deal with right now since the airline lost my luggage from Alaska to Canada.

It seems the Summer Silly Season for photo rumors is here again. There is a rumor going on that claims the EOS-5D Mark IV may come with a 30MP sensor. Frankly, I don't like to mention this kind of 'baseless' rumors but since I am on the road right now, it is hard for me to check with my sources but I am very skeptical at this time.

However, I am informed by my sources Canon will be adding a brand new feature to the upcoming EOS-5D Mark IV camera. They are playing their cards very close to their chest and not revealing much except to generate maximum publicity and excitement for the launch next month.

The EOS-5D Mark IV is Canon's most anticipated pro camera after the EOS-1D X Mark II because it promises a continuation of the highly successful EOS-5D line into a new decade. My latest information points to the camera coming with dual card slots - CFast 2.0 and the newer SDXC UHS-II.

Canon will be announcing the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II lens with the new camera. This is my favorite Canon 'wide to short' zoom 'L' lens and it can really take advantage of an upgrade. Looks like Canon has decided to offer the new camera and lens as a kit. I have not decided whether to buy the EOS-5D Mark IV when it comes out. I view the new camera as a little brother to the EOS-1D X Mark II and a more agile cousin to the EOS-5Ds. However, I will definitely buy the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS Series II lens.

Below is the latest information I have on the new camera right now.  The EOS-5D Mark IV will be announced in August, in time for the Photokina Show in Cologne, Germany on September 20. Digicame-Info reported Canon has registered a new camera with the Indonesian Certification Authority. My sources in Asia has confirmed Model name DS126601 is indeed the EOS-5D Mark IV.

Canon Planning To Add WiFi To Pro DSLR Bodies?

To date, the only prosumer Canon DSLR that has WiFi is the EOS-6D full frame camera. Apparently, Canon has problem adding WiFi to other higher end models like the EOS-1D X, EOS-5D Mk III, EOS-7D Mk II because of the interference created by their magnesium bodies.

Now a discovery in one of Canon's patents may shed some light on this topic. Has Canon finally worked out the difficulties in adding connectivity to their higher end cameras? Will we see WiFi added to the upcoming EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS-5D Mk IV DSLRs?

“Conventionally, there has been proposed a configuration of an imaging apparatus in which a wireless communication unit is arranged on the top side of a pentaprism in a finder section (see Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2008-244735). However, an accessory shoe for providing communication by being connected to an external device such as a strobe is provided on the visible face of an imaging apparatus.

Therefore, the metal section of the accessory shoe disturbs a radio wave to be emitted from or received by the antenna section of the wireless communication unit upon wireless communication, so that stable communication state cannot be obtained. In addition, the clearance between the wireless communication unit and the accessory shoe needs to be ensured, resulting in an undesirable increase in size in the height direction of the imaging apparatus.

Accordingly, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2000-75381 discloses a configuration in which the wireless communication unit is arranged on the inclined surface (Dach surface) of the pentaprism such that the accessory shoe does not disturb a radio wave upon wireless communication.”

Canon announced the EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras in February 2015 for those who want the highest mega pixel camera on the market and crave super high resolution photography.

I will not be buying this camera since it is not the right wildlife photography tool for me. I am waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and EOS-1D X Mk II, coming out later this year or early 2016. August is traditionally a slow month for photography news and rumors. Many people are away on their summer vacations, making it the perfect time for the Silly Season of vacuous claims and counter claims on chat forums, especially concerning the Canon EOS-5D Mk IV.

My best information and educated estimation is still the same. Nikon will announce their D5 camera first. Canon will then bring out the EOS-1D X Mk II, followed by the EOS-5D Mk IV. The recently released Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are descendants of the original EOS-5D, released in 2005. It was the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera and the official list price was roughly the same as the current list price of the EOS-5Ds. Considering inflation and the monumental advancement in technology packed into the new camera, I must say it is a very good deal, indeed.

The Nikon D810 camera was released in March 2015. Until the announcement of the Canon EOS-5Ds, this was the only mega pixel DSLR camera on the market.

The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of DSLR cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to upgrade or keep their present Canon or Nikon bodies.

The first thing that stands out in many people's mind is the Canon EOS-5Ds has a much higher pixel sensor. That in itself means little since both cameras can produce excellent photos that can be printed out in fairly large size. If one needs to print super large sized photos, then the EOS-5Ds has a slight edge.

The Nikon D810 does have the advantage over the Canon EOS-5Ds, with a native ISO of 12,800 vs 6,400. The EOS-5Ds edges out the D810 in terms of AF points, 61 vs 51. Both cameras shoot at a maximum of 5 fps and Canon maxes out at 14 RAW and 510 JPEG vs Nikon's 23 RAW and 100 JPEG.

Both cameras have cropped modes, in addition to the full frame capability. Canon's 1.3x and 1.6x vs Nikon's 1.2x and 1.5x

There are of course other differences with proprietary processors, video speed, etc. but suffice to say, they are differences without much distinction. The final stand out point is the Nikon D810 has better battery management capability and claims to shoot 1,200 vs Canon's 700 shots on a fully charged battery.  

In conclusion, both cameras are great full frame DSLRs, capable of producing sharp, extremely huge prints but they are unsuitable for wildlife photography, in my opinion. Whether one wants to upgrade from their present camera depends entirely on whether one needs a camera capable of producing mega prints. Canon EOS-5D Mk IIII replaced by EOS-5D X?

There are rumors suggesting the replacement to the EOS-5D Mk III will not be called the EOS-5D Mk IV. Instead it may split into 2 branches, EOS-5D X and EOS-5D Xs. The former designation will be the straight forward successor to the Mk III while the latter may be a version geared towards video users, replete with 4K.

This rumor is not new and the move is not unprecedented. Canon already split the EOS-1D model into the EOS-1D X and EOS-1D C. Frankly, I don't see the need for such a move. The splitting done on the EOS-1D model is not exactly a ringing success. In fact, the EOS-1D C had been heavily discounted and will be subsequently discontinued before long. The recently released Canon EOS-5Ds and the EOS-5D Mk III are descendants of the original EOS-5D, released in 2005. It was the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera and the official list price was roughly the same as the current list price of the EOS-5Ds. Considering inflation and the monumental advancement in technology packed into the new camera, I must say it is a very good deal, indeed.

The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of Canon cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to buy or keep their present EOS-5D Mk III or upgrade to the new EOS-5Ds or EOS-5DsR.

EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR full frame cameras :

Those who presently own the EOS-5D Mk III will find the two cameras surprising similar in looks, feel, functionality and ergonomics. This is by design because Canon is looking for a 'seamless' transformation and upgrade for users as much as possible. Of course, the big difference is the massive increase in pixel density of the EOS-5Ds, accompanied by a slower burst and depth rate.

The most puzzling and unnecessary feature to me on the EOS-5Ds is the 1.3x and 1.6x crop mode. With a 50MP sensor, there is plenty of pixels available for cropping during post processing. I do not own either camera because as a wildlife photographer, neither camera fits my needs plus I already have a few full frame bodies - EOS-1V, EOS-1Ds Mk III, EOS-5D and EOS-1D X.

For those who are into wedding, portrait and landscape/architectural photography, require massive amount of pixels for large photos and shoot in generally good to medium light conditions, the EOS-5Ds is a good choice. Its megapixel sensor offers resolution approaching those of medium format cameras and the camera is packed with unmatched functions and features.

Photographers who want a full frame camera with a 20+MP sensor, an advance AF system and superior high ISO performance for travel or occasional wildlife photography should consider the EOS-5D Mk III. I am waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and the EOS-1D X Mk II, coming out later this year.

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR Are Here

The Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are beginning to trickle into North America. Rudy Winston from Canon USA, will be joined by Gregory Heisler and Larry Becker on Monday, June 15, 2015, to hold a live streaming panel discussion for the launch of the Canon EOS 5Ds and EOS 5DsR cameras.

I will not be getting this camera because it is not the best tool for wildlife photography. Waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and the EOS-1D X Mk II, coming the second half of 2015.

Understanding Nikon Cameras' AF Systems

My readers know I am a wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for a long time. For those who shoot with Nikon cameras and want to better acquaint themselves with the AF funtions and features of their DSLRs, especially the newer models, the video below may offer some clarity. The Canon EOS-5D Mk III has been available for about three years and the EOS-7D Mk II came out late 2014. I bought the original EOS-5D and EOS-7D cameras when they first came out in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Both cameras are ahead of their time when they were announced and now both models are doing very well in their third and second generation. The EOS-5Ds and EOS-5Ds R are available now and you can read my comparison of this camera to the EOS-5D Mk III here.

I have picked the EOS-5D Mk III and EOS-7D Mk II as the best cameras in their class but they are very different bodies in their own right. The former is a full frame camera with a burst rate of 6 fps while the latter is a 1.6x cropped frame body with 10 fps. As a wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for 25 years, I have made some recommendation on their DSLRs after many years of usage.

Personally, I do not own the EOS-5D Mk III because I have too many full frame bodies already but it is a very nice piece of equipment for those who want a non EOS-1 professional camera and I have used it on many occasions. The EOS-7D Mk II is always in my equipment bag. I have taken this camera on worldwide photo trips from the high Arctic to the Southern Ocean. My main camera is the EOS-1D X and EOS-1D Mk IV. I am waiting for the EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS-5D Mk IV to debut later this year or early next year for my next DSLR purchase. You can see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon EOS-5D Mk III New Firmware Coming?

Apparently, some buyers of the new Canon EOS-5D Mk III cameras discovered their DSLR is running on Firmware Version 1.3.3 even though the Canon USA website shows the latest Firmware as Version 1.2.3

Is is not unusual for new cameras to have the latest firmwares on them so Canon may be announcing the new Firmware soon? Check back for the latest information.

Canon EOS-5D Mk III vs. Nikon D810 Comparison

Nikon announced their D810 camera about 3 months ago. This is a follow on model to their highly successful D800. The D810 comes with a new FX-format CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter, the latest EXPEED 4 image-processing engine, and a 36 MP sensor with a standard range of sensitivities from ISO 64 to ISO 12800 and a burst rate of 5 fps.

By the way, Nikon issued a service advisory for the newly-released D810. It seems some models were experiencing a ‘thermal issue’ when long exposures could cause bright spots to appear on the images. If you own the D810, check the serial numbers here, but if you are planning to buy one, look for the Blue Dot sticker on the box like the photo below. It indicates the problem has been addressed.

The Canon EOS-5D Mk III was launched about two and a half years ago. It comes with a 22MP CMOS sensor, DIGIC 5+ Image Processor, 61-Point High Density Reticular AF and an extended ISO range of 100–25600 and a burst rate of 6 fps.

Many pundits have put forth their own analysis of Canon vs. Nikon comparison over the years with charts and graphs on many different models but I like to point out in today's camera technology, a two year+ difference in launch dates can represent an almost entire new generation in technology sometimes. So any side by side comparison should take this into account because the other company will always come out with another follow on model later, incorporating the latest improvements.
