Nikon Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Will Have New Mount and Lenses

As reported earlier, Nikon is expected to announce their new full frame mirrorless camera next month but it will come with a new mount and line of lens.

Canon is also expected to announce their high end, full frame mirrorless camera in September, perhaps just before the Photokina Show on September 26, 2018 in Germany. What I am hoping for is Canon should have enough engineering expertise to overcome the obstacle Nikon cannot, and make their new camera compatible with the entire line of EF lenses without the use of an adapter.

There is probably a 50% chance that will happen but a new mount and line of lenses in not inconceivable. What I prefer is the new camera to use the native EF mount but will accept the addition of a small adapter if that's what it takes to have access to the entire line of EF lenses with the new Canon high end, full frame mirrorless camera. I will not buy the new camera if it requires a new line of lenses.

Canon High End Full Frame Mirrorless Camera and New Super Telephoto Lens Coming Soon

Canon is expected to announce a high end, full frame mirrorless camera very soon, perhaps just before the 2018 Photokina Show since Nikon is also expected to announce their full frame mirrorless camera around the last week of August 2018.

The EOS-90D and EOS-7D Mark III cameras may be announced in Q1 of 2019. In addition, a couple of Super Telephoto lenses are also expected, perhaps around the time of the 2018 Photokina Show in September in Germany as well.

My hope is one of the Big White lenses will be the EF 600mm f/4DO BR. Canon showcased this lens in their Expo back in September 2015 in New York City. Currently, the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II is my favorite DO lens and accompanies me on all my wildlife photography tours but sometimes I can use a bit more focal length.

However, I suspect the Super Telephoto lenses to be announced will be the Series III version of any of the following : EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II, EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II, EF 500mm f/4L IS II or EF 600mm f/4L IS II. Most likely the first two. These lenses are already Very good and any meaningful improvement will be at best marginally. A weight reduction will be most welcome. Some of the Series II lenses reduced about 1 1/2 pound weight from their predecessors.

A few Canon camera bodies have also shown up as the company filed registration papers with certification authorities in various countries.

Canon DS126721 is registered with overseas certification bodies. This is most probably a new Rebel camera with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

Two DSLR test cameras are code named K436 (EOS-80D Mark II or EOS-90D?) and K437 (EOS-7D Mark III?). Additional mirrorless cameras are code named K424, K433 and EC 811. All the new cameras come with the DIGIC 8 processors.

K424 will be a 30 to 40 MP full frame mirrorless camera with a brand new sensor, dual card slots and a burst rate performance close to the EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera. DIGIC 8+ processor will power the camera and DPAF 4K will come standard with the 4K video. Announcement is expected around the 2018 Photokina Show time frame.

K333 will also be a full frame mirrorless camera but with less features and a lower price.

EC 811 may be the EOS-M5 Mark II APS-C mirrorless camera.

Sadly, I am not convinced the upcoming high end, Canon full frame mirrorless camera will fit my needs unless it comes with the EF mount. These are early days and there is little point in further speculation. Keep checking back for the latest information and development.

Nikon Confirmed New Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Coming Q1, 2019

Nothing surprising here. I have been reporting Canon and Nikon have been working on their own full frame mirrorless camera for over two years now. In a recent NHK interview, a Nikon executive has confirmed the company's intention to bring such a camera to market by the first quarter of 2019.
Canon is also expected to announce a high end full frame mirrorless camera around the same time frame. Nikon's new camera is expected to require an adapter in order to use their F mount lenses. That is not very desirable. Canon already has such an arrangement with their series of EOS-M mirrorless cameras.

I have discussed how Canon can make their new high end mirrorless camera an instant success upon announcement. We will have to see how they intend to proceed with this important project. Keep checking back for the latest information and development.

Canon May Announce Two Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras

My readers know I am not a fan of the current crop of consumer and prosumer mirrorless cameras on the market. I have been reporting on Canon working on their own full frame mirrorless cameras for over two years now.

The latest rumor is Canon may announce two full frame mirrorless models. The first one will be the professional version, with the high end but not quite pro model coming a few months later. Apparently, Canon is still working hard on how to come out with a native EF mount model.

My advice to Canon is simple. If you cannot announce a professional full frame mirrorless camera with the EF mount soon, you will never catch up and overtake Sony's lead. This will be a big mistake and grave opportunity loss. Therefore, failure is not an option. Anything less than a high end, native EF mount model with a mid to high 30MP sensor will not excite professional photographers like myself and Canon does not have a lot of chances to make improvements on their mistakes.

Therefore, make this full frame mirrorless camera project your highest priority and get it right the first time. An announcement is expected by the end of the year. Keep checking back for the latest information as I get them.
