Canon EOS-5D Mark IV Camera - $2,899 with Free Shipping

My readers know I use the EOS-1D X Mark II full frame camera as the main body for my work. My venerable EOS-1Ds Mark III was replaced by the EOS-5Ds, another full frame, 61-point AF, 50 megapixel camera. My EOS-5Ds is also used for nature, travel and wildlife photography. The resolution of its impressive sensor,  the ability to crop the image to 1.3x and 1.6x right inside the camera are great advantages for me when it comes to wildlife photography, offsetting its main disadvantage - the slow 5 fps burst rate.

The Canon EOS-5D Mark IV was announced back in August. It is a very good, full frame 30MP DSLR camera that is taking the role of 'little brother' to the EOS-1D X Mark II. Not every photographer needs and wants the latest and greatest gear and the EOS-5D Mark III is a great value for nature, and wedding photographers.

Last week, I reported there is a highly-rated merchant on eBay selling the Canon EOS-5D Mark III camera for $1,799 including free shipping. The list price is $2,499. I have written posts comparing the EOS-5D Mark III to the EOS-5DsEOS-7D Mark II and the Nikon D810 for those thinking of upgrading to this body or buying the other cameras. You can see my recommendation for the best Canon cameras.

But for those who are determined to get the latest Canon full frame model, there is a highly-rated merchant on eBay selling the Canon EOS-5D Mark IV camera for $2,899 including free shipping. The list price is $3,499. If you are interested in buying one, don't delay too much longer.

Canon EOS-5Ds Mark II Camera Coming in 2017?

Canon announced its long awaited EOS-5D Mark IV camera in August. The EOS-5Ds and EOS-5Ds R were announced back in February, 2015. Frankly, I find it unnecessary to have two different models of this camera. Originally, I was not going to buy this body because I shoot primarily wildlife photography and the slow burst rate (5 fps) deterred me.

My main body is the EOS-1D X Mark II but finally, I relented and bought the EOS-5Ds to replace my EOS-1Ds Mark III and have been quite happy since. You can see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Word is the EOS-5Ds Mark II may arrive some time late 2017 or early 2018. It will probably just come in one model, with a new sensor and practically identical ergonomics with the present models but with a slight weight reduction. This will represent a shorter replacement cycle for Canon but the competition for high end, full frame camera is heating up, especially coming from Sony and Canon has to respond. Keep checking back for more information and latest development.

Canon EOS-5D Mark IV camera

Canon has announced the EOS-1D X Mark II camera earlier this month, with delivery scheduled for late April. I have placed my order and anxiously waiting for the DSLR to arrive. Now attention has again shifted to the EOS-5D Mark IV.

Canon EOS-5D Mark III ($1899) EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II ($1590)

Canon EOS-5D Mark III with EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens

There is a highly rated merchant on eBay selling the Canon EOS-5D Mark III camera for $1,899 and EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens for $1,590. The list price is $2,499 and $1,799 respectively.

You will not find a link to this merchant because I do not accept any advertisement or commissioned link on my Blog or website. I am completely unbiased in my recommendation and have no conflict of interest. You can find the listing easily by Googling it yourself.

My readers know I have recently retired my EOS-1Ds Mark III in favor of the EOS-5Ds camera. I debated between buying the EOS-5D Mark III vs the EOS-5Ds and came down on the side of the 5Ds because of its unmatched sensor and versatility in capturing full frame, APS-H and APS-C images all in one body. I have written a post comparing the two cameras and you can see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Black Friday Deal - Canon EOS-5D Mark III $1,899

Canon EOS-5D Mark III full frame camera

The Canon EOS-5D Mark III camera has been my pick as the best value, full frame DSLR camera for the last three years in a row. I have written posts comparing the EOS-5D Mark III to the EOS-5Ds, EOS-7D Mark II and the Nikon D810 for those thinking of upgrading to the 5D3 or buying the other cameras. You can see my recommendation for the best Canon cameras.

Although Canon is expected to announce the EOS-5D Mark IV some time in the first half of 2016, not every photographer needs and wants the latest and greatest gear and the EOS-5D Mark III is a great value for nature, and wedding photographers.

After much deliberation, I have finally replaced my venerable EOS-1Ds Mark III with the EOS-5Ds full frame, 61-point AF, 50 megapixel camera. My 5Ds will be used primarily for nature and travel photography but occasionally for wildlife that don't move too much. The resolution of its impressive sensor,  the ability to crop the image to 1.3x and 1.6x right inside the camera are great advantages for me when it comes to wildlife photography, offsetting its main disadvantage - the slow 5 fps burst rate.

There is a highly-rated merchant on eBay selling the Canon EOS-5D Mark III camera for $1,899 including free shipping. The list price is $2,799. If you are interested in buying one, don't delay too much longer.

Sony a7R II vs Canon EOS-5DsR Camera Comparison

Sony a7R II vs Canon EOS-5DsR camera comparison
My readers know, I have been a Canon user for over 25 years. Through the decades, I have used almost all of Canon's cropped and full frame, film and digital cameras, plus the EF and EF-S lenses. You can see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

The recently released Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are descendants of the original EOS-5D, released in 2005. It was the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera and the official list price was roughly the same as the current list price of the EOS-5Ds. Considering inflation and the monumental advancement in technology packed into the new camera, I must say it is a very good deal, indeed.

The Sony a7R II camera was released in June 2015. The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to upgrade or keep their present Canon or Sony bodies.

EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR DSLR cameras :
  • 50.6 MP full frame sensor
  • Powered by dual DIGIC 6 processors
  • Optical low pass filter on EOS-5Ds. Self cancelling on EOS-5DsR
  • 1.3x (30.5MP) plus 1.6x (19.6MP) with 1:1 ratio crop mode
  • 3.2 inch, 1040K dot LCD screen.
  • Dual card slots, one CF, one SD
  • Burst rate 5 fps. Burst depth, up to 510 JPEG and 14 RAW files
  • ISO range from 100 - 6400, 50 - 12800 with expansion
  • 61-point High Density Reticular AF, 41 cross type points, 5 double cross type
  • 150,000 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, 252 zone
  • Custom Functions - 16, USB 3.0
  • Number of cross-points depends on the speed of the lens used.
  • 59 ms. shutter lag, 150,000 cycle shutter and .71x viewfinder.
  • DxOMark overall sensor score - 87
  • Low light ISO - 2381 ISO

Sony a7R II mirrorless camera :
  • 42.2MP BSI Full-frame CMOS sensor
  • ISO 50-102400 expanded
  • 5 axis built in IS
  • 399 Phase Detection AF system
  • Max 5 fps shooting
  • 3.0 inch 1229K dot LCD screen
  • Shoots video in 4K
  • Shutter rated at 500,000
  • Low light ISO - 3434 (no surprise here)
  • WiFi / NFC
  • 2.36m dot Electronic Viewfinder
  • Battery life 340 shots
  • SD card slot and Memory Stick
  • Mic and Headphone sockets

The first thing that stands out is the Canon EOS-5Ds is a 'bigger and heavier' camera. That in itself means little since both cameras can produce excellent photos that can be printed in very large size. If one needs to print super large sized photos, the EOS-5Ds has a slight edge.

The Sony a7R II does have the advantage over the Canon EOS-5Ds, with an expanded ISO of 102400 vs 6400. Both cameras shoot at a maximum of 5 fps and there are of course, differences with proprietary processors, video speed, AF system, etc. but suffice to say, they are differences without much distinction. The final stand out point is the Canon EOS-5Ds has better battery management capability and claims to shoot 700 vs Sony's 340 shots on a fully charged battery.

In conclusion, both cameras are great for full frame photography, capable of producing sharp, extremely huge prints. The Canon EOS-5Ds is a full frame DSLR while the Sony a7R II has a full frame mirrorless design. The Sony a7R II is superior to the older a7R in all aspects.

More importantly, to me, the difference between a DSLR and mirrorless camera's design is the real issue. The EOS-5Ds (in particular the EOS-1D X) feels like a real camera with excellent grip and ergonomics. It is designed as a more rugged body and goes with a full complement of EF lens, from 8mm to 1200mm. The Sony is designed as a 'lighter, compact all-in-one package' stuffed with 'fluffy' technology and works with a smaller complement of lens, although one can buy an adapter and use it with some Canon's EF lens.

For the photographer who prefers to travel light and take mostly landscape/nature/portrait/wedding photos and videos, the Sony a7II R is a good choice. As a wildlife photographer, neither the Canon EOS-5Ds nor the Sony a7R II camera is a good alternative for wildlife photography, in my opinion. I am waiting for the EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS-5D Mk IV to debut later this year or early next year for my next DSLR purchase.

Whether one wants to upgrade from their present camera depends entirely on whether one needs a camera capable of producing mega prints. For Canon users thinking of upgrading from the EOS-5D Mk III to the EOS-5Ds, read my comparison here. For a comparison between the Nikon D810 and the Canon EOS-5Ds, read this post.

Canon Demonstrates 250MP Sensor Turbulence Removal Feature

At the EXPO 2015 was in New York and Paris, Canon played a video demonstration of their 250MP sensor. They described it as 'Turbulence Removal', which helps reduce environmental fluctuations that can show up in telephoto images.

The experimental 250MP is still a work-in-progress for a few years to come. The EOS-5Ds and EOS-5Ds R will be Canon's highest megapixel camera for the foreseeable future.

Canon Europe and Getty Images Present Iconic Images

Canon Europe and Getty Images have revealed a series of iconic images, shot by some of the world’s leading photographers, which represent defining moments from the past decade and bring to light the power of photography and the role it plays in helping to affect change around the world…

Known for enabling people to tell the stories that need to be told, the Canon EOS 5D series celebrates its 10th anniversary with an initiative that showcases ten amazing images that tell some of these stories. From exposing the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian army, to uncovering illegal logging of rare and endangered trees in Madagascar, the EOS 5D has been the camera of choice for many professional photographers over the past decade and has captured some of the world’s most significant and important moments.

To view all the images and the amazing stories behind them, visit Canon’s Showcase within the Come and See website. The images will also be available to view as part of a special anniversary exhibition within Canon’s space during the professional week at Visa pour l’Image 2015, the annual festival of photojournalism held in Perpignan, France, from August 31 to September 6 2015.

CANON INVITES YOU TO SHARE YOUR ICONIC IMAGES

To further celebrate ten years of profound imagery, Canon Europe is also launching a pan-European competition that will offer participants the chance to win limited edition EOS 5D anniversary prizes.

All photographers, from amateurs to professionals, both smartphone and camera users, are invited to share an image that they feel represents a story of change. A panel of award winning judges, including Canon Ambassador Brent Stirton and Getty Images photographer Toby Smith, will select the winners. The Canon Iconic Images competition will run in 19 European countries (UK, France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Russia) from September 1 until October 2 2015.

For more information please visit the ‘Iconic Images’ competition page within the Gallery section of Canon’s ‘Come and See’ website.

“Since the launch of the original EOS 5D in 2005, the series has grown to become one of the most popular camera ranges of all time. Ten years on and now with four iterations under our belts, we’re showcasing today at Visa pour l’image how the EOS 5D series has enabled photographers around the world to tell some of the most important stories throughout the past decade,” said Kieran Magee, Director, Professional Imaging Group, Canon Europe. “We’re incredibly proud of what has been achieved over the past ten years and want to invite everyone, both amateur and professional photographers, to share their own iconic stories and join us in celebrating the power of photography.”

Although Canon recently released their latest version, the EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR, I will not be buying this model because it is not the right tool for my wildlife photography. I will be waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV, coming out in a few months. You can see many wildlife and travel images taken with my EOS-5D cameras through the last decade on MichaelDanielHo.com

More Canon EOS-5D Mk IV Camera Talk

Canon EOS-5D Mk IV full frame camera?

Celebrate 10 years of Canon EOS-5D cameras - September 2015 will be the 10th anniversary of the launch of the original EOS-5D. Join Canon at Live Learning San Francisco on August 22, 2015 to celebrate the anniversary of this amazing line of EOS cameras. The address is : 201 California St., San Francisco, CA 94111  Email Canon for more info - SanFranciscoCanon@cusa.canon.com

Canon announced the EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras in February 2015 for those who want the highest mega pixel camera on the market and crave super high resolution photography.

I will not be buying this camera since it is not the right wildlife photography tool for me. I am waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and EOS-1D X Mk II, coming out later this year or early 2016. For those thinking of upgrading from the EOS-5D Mk III to either model, take a look at my comparison between the cameras.

August is traditionally a slow month for photography news and rumors. Many people are away on their summer vacations, making it the perfect time for the Silly Season of vacuous claims and counter claims on chat forums, especially concerning the Canon EOS-5D Mk IV.

My best information and educated estimation is still the same. Nikon will announce their D5 camera first. Canon will then bring out the EOS-1D X Mk II, followed by the EOS-5D Mk IV. The upcoming Canon EXPO 2015 may shed more light on the two upcoming, highly anticipated DSLR bodies. Keep checking back for the latest news and development.

The Nikon D810 camera was released in March 2015. Until the announcement of the Canon EOS-5Ds, this was the only mega pixel DSLR camera on the market.

The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of DSLR cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to upgrade or keep their present Canon or Nikon bodies.

The first thing that stands out in many people's mind is the Canon EOS-5Ds has a much higher pixel sensor. That in itself means little since both cameras can produce excellent photos that can be printed out in fairly large size. If one needs to print super large sized photos, then the EOS-5Ds has a slight edge.

The Nikon D810 does have the advantage over the Canon EOS-5Ds, with a native ISO of 12,800 vs 6,400. The EOS-5Ds edges out the D810 in terms of AF points, 61 vs 51. Both cameras shoot at a maximum of 5 fps and Canon maxes out at 14 RAW and 510 JPEG vs Nikon's 23 RAW and 100 JPEG.

Both cameras have cropped modes, in addition to the full frame capability. Canon's 1.3x and 1.6x vs Nikon's 1.2x and 1.5x

There are of course other differences with proprietary processors, video speed, etc. but suffice to say, they are differences without much distinction. The final stand out point is the Nikon D810 has better battery management capability and claims to shoot 1,200 vs Canon's 700 shots on a fully charged battery.

In conclusion, both cameras are great full frame DSLRs, capable of producing sharp, extremely huge prints but they are unsuitable for wildlife photography, in my opinion. Whether one wants to upgrade from their present camera depends entirely on whether one needs a camera capable of producing mega prints. Canon EOS-5Ds Camera For $3200 With Free Shipping

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR 50MP full frame cameras

The Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are available everywhere now. DxOMark recently came out with their sensor score on the camera and compared it to the Nikon D810 and Sony a7R.
I have compared the EOS-5D Mk III to the EOS-5Ds for those who are contemplating buying either camera or upgrading to one.

There is a top-rated merchant on eBay selling the Canon EOS-5Ds camera for $3,200 including free shipping. The list price is $3,699 so if you are interested in buying one, don't delay too much longer. Canon recently put out a list of recommended lens with this camera and there is also a Canon rebate program going on right now if you buy the camera with specify lens.

You will not find a link to this eBay item because I do not accept any ad or commissioned link on my Blog or website. I am completely unbiased in my recommendation and have no conflict of interest. You can see my wildlife photography on MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon EOS-5DsR 50MP Camera In Africa

Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR 50MP full frame cameras

The Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are available everywhere now. DxOMark recently came out with their sensor score on the camera and compared it to the Nikon D810 and Sony a7R.
I have compared the EOS-5D Mk III to the EOS-5Ds for those who are contemplating buying either camera or upgrading to one. The current 5D3 is an excellent camera and my pick as the best value in full frame photography.

I am not buying the new 5D. My attention is focused on later this year when Canon plans a second round of upgrade to their full frame camera lineup by announcing the EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS-5D Mk IV. Both cameras are expected to have new sensors and processors with unmatched dynamic range and high ISO performance. The EOS-1D X Mk II is expected to be announced first, perhaps in Q4 with an end of year to Q1 2016 delivery date.

The video below from Abraham Joffe was shot in Botswana. He uses his new camera for still wildlife shots but I feel the EOS-5D Mk III is sufficient for that purpose. My main camera for wildlife photography are the EOS-1D X and EOS-7D Mk II.

More Canon EOS-5D Mk IV Camera Talk

Canon EOS-5D Mk IV camera

The Canon EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR cameras are available everywhere now. DxOMark recently came out with their sensor score on the camera and compared it to the Nikon D810 and Sony a7R.
I have a post comparing the EOS-5D Mk III to the EOS-5Ds for those who are contemplating buying either camera or upgrading to one. The current 5D3 is an excellent camera and my pick as the best value in full frame photography.

My attention is focused on later this year when Canon plans a second round of upgrade to their full frame camera lineup by announcing the EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS-5D Mk IV. The EOS-1D X Mk II is expected to be announced first, perhaps in Q4 with an end of year to Q1 2016 delivery date.

The EOS-5D Mk IV may be announced Q1 to Q2 of 2016, with delivery in the following quarter. Canon has invested a lot of time and money into these two cameras. They are putting on an invitation only Exposition (once every 5 years) in New York City and Paris in September, 2015. There may be some development coming out of these two events. Keep checking back for the latest development.

Possible specs for EOS-5D Mk IV :

  • Burst rate 8 to 10 fps
  • Camera may have 4K video
  • Comes with new sensor and processor

Canon EOS-5Ds vs EOS-5D Mk III Camera Comparison

My readers know, I have been a Canon user for about 25 years. Through the decades, I have used almost all of Canon's cropped and full frame, film and digital cameras, plus the EF and EF-S lenses. You can see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com

The recently released Canon EOS-5Ds and the EOS-5D Mk III are descendants of the original EOS-5D, released in 2005. It was the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera and the official list price was roughly the same as the current list price of the EOS-5Ds. Considering inflation and the monumental advancement in technology packed into the new camera, I must say it is a very good deal, indeed.

The following comparison covers the two cameras' major features, and assumes the reader is already familiar with the functionality and capabilities of Canon cameras. It is intended to help those trying to decide whether to buy or keep their present EOS-5D Mk III or upgrade to the new EOS-5Ds or EOS-5DsR.

EOS-5Ds and EOS-5DsR full frame cameras :

  • 50.6 MP sensor powered by dual DIGIC 6 processors
  • Optical low pass filter on EOS-5Ds. Self cancelling on EOS-5DsR
  • 1.3x (30.5MP) plus 1.6x (19.6MP) with 1:1 ratio crop mode
  • 3.2 inch, 1040K dot LCD screen.
  • Dual card slots, one CF, one SD
  • Burst rate 5 fps. Burst depth, up to 510 JPEG and 14 RAW files
  • ISO range from 100 - 6400, 50 - 12800 with expansion
  • 61-point High Density Reticular AF, 41 cross type points, 5 double cross type
  • 150,000 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, 252 zone
  • Custom Functions - 16, USB 3.0
  • Number of cross-points depends on the speed of the lens used.
  • 59 ms. shutter lag, 150,000 cycle shutter and .71x viewfinder.
  • DxOMark overall sensor score - 87
  • Low light ISO - 2381 ISO

EOS-5D Mk III full frame camera :

  • 22.3 MP sensor powered by dual DIGIC 5+ processors
  • Optical low pass filter
  • 3.2 inch, 1040K dot LCD screen
  • Dual card slots, one CF and one SD
  • Burst rate 6 fps. Burst depth, up to 16270 JPEG and 18 RAW files
  • ISO range from 100 - 12800, 50 - 102400 with expansion.
  • 61-point High Density Reticular AF, 41 cross type points, 5 double cross type
  • iFCL metering sensor, 63 zone
  • Custom Functions 13, USB 2.0
  • Number of cross-points depends on the speed of the lens used
  • 59 ms. shutter lag, 150,000 cycle shutter and .71x viewfinder
  • DxOMark overall sensor score - 81
  • Low Light ISO - 2293 ISO

Those who presently own the EOS-5D Mk III will find the two cameras surprising similar in looks, feel, functionality and ergonomics. This is by design because Canon is looking for a 'seamless' transformation and upgrade for users as much as possible. Of course, the big difference is the massive increase in pixel density of the EOS-5Ds, accompanied by a slower burst and depth rate.

The most puzzling and unnecessary feature to me on the EOS-5Ds is the 1.3x and 1.6x crop mode. With a 50MP sensor, there is plenty of pixels available for cropping during post processing. I do not own either camera because as a wildlife photographer, neither camera fits my needs plus I already have a few full frame bodies - EOS-1V, EOS-1Ds Mk III, EOS-5D and EOS-1D X.

For those who are into wedding, portrait and landscape/architectural photography, require massive amount of pixels for large photos and shoot in generally good to medium light conditions, the EOS-5Ds is a good choice. Its megapixel sensor offers resolution approaching those of medium format cameras and the camera is packed with unmatched functions and features.

Photographers who want a full frame camera with a 20+MP sensor, an advance AF system and superior high ISO performance for travel or occasional wildlife photography should consider the EOS-5D Mk III. I am waiting for the EOS-5D Mk IV and the EOS-1D X Mk II, coming out later this year.
