This Lens Safe Gadget May Make Theft A Bit Harder

The Wildlife Ho-tographer's first photo tour of 2017. We will drink to that.

I am back home after a rather successful East Africa Wildlife Photo Tour. It will take me a little time to get back in my daily routine and updating my readers on the latest Canon rumors, and photography news in general.

This was my first photo safari of 2017 and this will be another busy season for me. The equipment I brought with me worked well. I used the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, EOS-5Ds cameras, EF 400mm f/4 DO IS IIEF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II lens. You can follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter. Theft is a fact of life in our modern world and it is no different in the photography business. Last year's theft and robbery cases of photographers during the 2016 Summer Olympics made the news. In all my years of traveling and wildlife photography, I have never experienced any theft or loss. Equipment malfunction is a bigger threat to me when I am on the road globe trotting. However, I am also a very careful wildlife photographer and meticulous planner and take little risk.

Photographer Rutger Geerling and his friend Mark have embarked on designing a gadget to make it harder for thiefs to remove the lens off a camera body by pressing on the release button, while the photographer is busy taking photos or otherwise engaged. The current prototype is available for Canon EF mount only.

The design is dubbed the "Lens Safe". It involves an inexpensive 3D printed ring that mounts between the body and the lens and makes it 'impossible' to remove the lens with just one hand.  Of course this defeats the purpose of the original design to make it easy for the photographer to change lens with minimal effort.

Available for free download as a 3MB ZIP file, the current deisgn can be made with minimal cost on a 3D printer. The trick is having access to a 3D printer or find some place to have it printed out for you.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens Specifications

Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens

Canon is expected to release the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens very soon. Digicame, the Japanese photography blog has published some specs on this new lens. This lens will give those who take a lot of videos the advantage of STM technology. For the rest of us, including myself, I will stick to the venerable EF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens instead.

EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens specs :

  • One piece UD lens with two glass aspherical lens
  • Smooth and quiet AF capability provided by stepping motor
  • Full-time manual focus
  • 4 stop Image Stabilizer compensation
  • Maximum shooting magnification 0.3x

Your First Prime Lens - 35mm or 50mm?

The Kai guy at DigitalRev is posing the question - if you are limited to just one of the two lenses, 35mm or 50mm, which one would you choose? My own decision is 35mm for a cropped frame and 50mm for a full frame camera.

Of course we have not taken into account the speed and price of the lens. In general, my readers know I prefer zoom to prime lens and my favorite walk-around glass is the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L. Although it is a lens with an older technology, its quality and performance makes it a great value performer for me.

I am a wildlife photographer who also take travel photos now and then. You can read my Canon lens recommendation here and see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon EOS-70D With EF 18-135mm - $1,099

Canon EOS-70D with EF 18-135mm lens

There is a top-rated merchant on eBay selling the Canon EOS-70D camera with the EF 18-135mm IS STM lens for $1,099 including shipping. Hurry, it won't last. This is an excellent deal with Canon's latest Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology and STM lens capability for enhanced videos.

You will not find a link to this eBay item because I do not accept any ad or commissioned link on my Blog. I am completely unbiased in my recommendation and have no conflict of interest. You can see travel and wildlife images on my worldwide photo shoots on MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 DO Macro Lens

Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 DO Macro Lens?

Egami, the Japanese photography blog has uncovered a Canon patent for the EF 180mm f/3.5 DO Macro lens. Frankly, I am puzzled by this design. The current EF 180mm f/3.5L is a slow lens but it's not heavy. If I were Canon, I'd make the lens faster and add IS instead of making it smaller and lighter. But then it's only a patent. Many patents never make it to the market anyway.
