EU-V3 : Modular Expansion Unit for Live Production, Compatible with The EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III Cameras

With the increased move towards large format sensor cameras for broadcast, events, and live sports production – providing viewers with a unique perspective when watching their favorite teams play – Canon has listened to user requirements with the EU-V3 expansion module for both the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III. Building on both cameras’ modular design, it expands and supports specific functionality for multi-camera and live productions.

For studio and live production use, the EU-V3 has a 4-pin XLR DC power input for constant power to both the expansion module and the camera body – no need for external batteries to power the devices.

The EU-V3 also offers an SDI return video feature, allowing real-time monitoring of a live broadcast feed from a production switcher. The return output destination can be selected from the VIDEO, EVF-V50, MON/HDMI, and SDI-OUT terminals. The EU-V3 also enables Tally support to alert the camera operator and the subject being captured. Both SDI Return video and Tally functions are essential for informing camera operators and their subjects of when their camera feed is live and the current status of the production.

The lens focus position can also be displayed on-screen when using the EU-V3 – with compatible broadcast and CINE-SERVO lenses via 12-pin serial communication. The Focus Position Meter, which users can choose to display along the top or right side of the screen, allows users to register multiple focus positions on a distance scale and highlights when the focus is achieved during manual operation – such as when selecting the finish line for a race.

The EU-V3 can be combined with the CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S) lens on the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III cameras.

Cinema EOS Firmware : Expanding Horizons

A new Cinema EOS Firmware update is being introduced to strengthen the capabilities for the live production market for both the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III cameras – enabling both cameras to be used within live environments and multiple workflows. Key updates include :

• Implementing XC protocol: integration into multi-camera solutions, supporting direct control via RC-IP100 remote camera controller (sold separately) and ethernet connections.
• Strengthening of AF features: 120p / 100p AF support, alongside face detection during Slow and Fast Shooting Mode.
• Audio 4ch display: the audio level display will show all four audio channels when this mode is selected.
• New accessory and lens support: allowing the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III camera to work perfectly with both the CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S) lens and EU-V3, as well as support for the Flex Zoom series of lenses.

DP-V2730 : 4K HDR Display For The New Generation

An advanced professional 4K HDR monitor, the DP-V2730, has a 4K UHD display engine and 1,000 cd/m² full-screen peak brightness, with Canon’s local dimming technology giving an ultra-low black level of 0.001 cd/m². A great option for both filmmakers and broadcasters, the DP-V2730 has a 27-inch screen that achieves high brightness with minimal noise, which is ideal for both on-set and post-production environments, and meets Dolby Vision certification standards and EBU TECH3320 user requirements[iii]. 

The DP-V2730 features a suite of award-winning monitoring tools such as a waveform monitor, histogram, frame luminance monitor, RGB parade, and much more – all driven by Canon’s latest processing platform. The display is a great companion for broadcast and filmmaking, delivering high-end 4K HDR performance for on-set video villages, on-location production facilities, and is ideal for virtual post-production editing, VFX, and color grading.

Canon announced the XF605 4K UHD Professional Camcorder

MELVILLE, NY, August 17, 2021 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the launch of the XF605 4K UHD professional camcorder. The new XF-series professional camcorder comes equipped with a 1.0-inch CMOS sensor and the ability to record 4K/60p/4:2:2/10-bit/HDR video to dual onboard SD card slots. Equipped with Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF1, the XF605 achieves high-speed and high-accuracy focusing and is the first XF-series model to include Eye Detection AF, as well as improved face and head detection, enabling more accurate and stable tracking of subjects. The new camcorder also includes new video transmission functionality, making it an ideal tool for broadcast journalists.

Featuring a Canon L-Series lens with 15x zoom, 3-ring operation, a 1.0-inch CMOS sensor, and a DIGIC DV7 image processor, the XF605 allows for the capture of in-camera HDR video. Users also have the ability to leverage a high frame rate of up to 120 FPS when opting for Full HD recording. Canon Log 3 recording is also available, to provide additional color latitude. Weighing more than 21 ounces less than the XF705, (which is more than a 25% reduction), the XF605’s compact body is also 10% shorter in both length and height.

In addition, the camcorder provides professionals with a more intuitive user experience through features such as Direct Touch menu operations and touch-panel playback. By way of the newly released CTM2 mobile app for iOS, the XF605 can connect and transfer recorded video data via cable3 or wirelessly to compatible iOS devices and transfer proxy footage, audio, and metadata to servers at broadcast stations or other locations, thus making possible faster and more efficient workflows for broadcast operations. The camcorder features built-in Wi-Fi/Ethernet connectivity for Browser Remote, IP streaming, and FTP transfer. Canon released video on their upcoming Cinema EOS 8K video camera

Canon Japan released a teaser video for its upcoming 8K video camera. It will be available on their Cinema EOS CXXX series of bodies. The prototype model is out for field testing. 

Some time in Q1 or Q2 of 2021, Canon is also expected to announce their top-of-the-line mirrorless camera, the EOS R1. I suspect it will come with unmatched video performance, perhaps in 8K as well and superior to what is available on the EOS R5. Stay tuned for the latest news and development.

Canon announced EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera and Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x

MELVILLE, NY, September 24, 2020 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce the company's first-ever RF mount Cinema EOS camera, the EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera. When the Canon RF mount was first introduced, imaging professionals began to dream about the possibilities that this revolutionary mount system might provide them. One request that Canon consistently heard was to put an RF mount on a Cinema EOS camera so that future lens performance could capitalize on the short flange depth. Just two short years later, those wishes have come true with the new C70 camera. 

The unique design of the EOS C70 camera puts a significant emphasis on operational convenience for the end-user. The small form-factor, weighing only 2.6lbs., allows the camera to be easily handheld and dramatically enhances a videographer's mobility, providing a seamless bridge between the EOS and Cinema EOS families for cinematic applications. Cleverly designed, the camera features a slim, motorized ND filter unit – having a mere 6mm depth – that is built into the short flange back of the RF mount. The motorized 10-stop ND filter provides users with the flexibility to control exposure while keeping the desired depth-of-field and capturing images that feature the desired level of bokeh. Thirteen customizable buttons allow users to select from more than 80 functions to be assigned based on individual preferences.

The camera features Canon's innovative and next-generation Super 35mm DGO Sensor that further extends the high dynamic range and lowers noise levels by reading out each photodiode with two different gains. One gain prioritizes saturation – protecting detail in highlight areas – while the other suppresses noise in the shadows. The result is an image with up to 16-plus stops of total dynamic range, clean, rich shadows, and vibrant highlights in up to 4K/ 60p or 2K/120p in Super16mm Crop mode. The EOS C70 camera also features Canon's recently developed DIGIC DV7 image processor that collects the extensive information captured from the DGO sensor and processes it into exceptional HDR imagery while offering choices between Canon Log 2 and 3, in addition to PQ and HLG gamma functionality. The C70 camera can also record 4K DCI or UHD up to 120fps and 2K DCI or HD up to 180 fps – with an important flexibility in the choice of codecs. 

The camera supports XF-AVC format (in variable bit-rate) – both Intra and Long GOP with MXF file format. The intra-frame format compresses the data after analyzing each frame separately, while Long GOP format compresses data at a higher rate, creating an even smaller file size. A secondary choice is Long GOP 10-bit 4:2:2/4:2:0 MP4/HEVC (a next-generation HDR video recording compression standard) with an MP4 file format – a first in the Cinema EOS line. 

The camera's independent air intake system is separated from the electrical systems to protect the sensor from water, sand, and dust. In addition, the camera also features two air outlet vents that allow uninterrupted recording for extended periods of time.

Canon announced XA Professional Camcorders with 4K 30p Recording

MELVILLE, NY, April 2, 2019 – Meeting videographer needs for a variety of applications, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced four new additions to the lineup of XA Series professional camcorders, the XA55, XA50, XA45 and XA40. These four camcorders are the first in the series to feature 4K 30p recording. They also include a detachable XLR handle and the XA55 and XA45 each feature an HD-SDI terminal. The XA55 and XA50 camcorders both feature a 1.0-inch sensor, nine-bladed circular aperture and Dual-Pixel CMOS AF with a 15x (25.5-382.5mm) genuine wide-angle Canon optical zoom lens. For natural and realistic life-like imagery the XA55 and XA50 camcorders feature a Wide Dynamic Range (DR) Gamma mode. This lowers the barrier for focusing, especially when shooting in 4K, which requires strict focus accuracy. By suppressing overexposure in high- brightness areas of the composition, this mode helps achieve a wide dynamic range of 800 percent to help produce seamless tone gradations, resulting in smooth detail, accurate color and virtually no blown-out highlights.

To help provide enhanced image quality over its predecessor, over sample HD processing can be utilized with information obtained from the 4K 1/2.3-inch sensor and the DIGIC DV 6 image processor. The Canon VIXIA HF G60 4K UHD camcorder is packed with many of the same great features found in the XA55 and XA50, like a nine-bladed circular aperture, Dual Pixel Focus Guide and Wide DR, but with the budget- conscious user in mind. Canon EOS-90D Camera Will Be A Big Leap Forward

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer, utilizing Canon equipment for almost three decades and traversing the globe on wildlife photography shoots. As I travel to remote places, I am usually out of WiFi range and lack contact with the photography world and news but gain valuable field experiences in testing many Canon gear and equipment.

The bread-n-butter model of Canon's DSLR lineup is the EOS-80D. It has been over 2 years since this camera was announced. My sources informed me the replacement model, EOS-90D will be 'a big leap forward'.

This may mean a lot of things to many photographers but one thing is certain. Canon has been aware the video performance of their latest cameras may not be perceived as competitive as some Sony models, for instance. This does not bother me because my philosophy is as a still photographer, my equipment should be the best in class in one thing, and not try to be best in multiple classes. For those who prefer the best in videography, they should go for the EOS Cinema series of cameras. 

Nevertheless, perception is everything these days and Canon is known for a slow, methodical approach to introducing new products and features. Recently, Canon's CEO has expressed his desire to speed up the company's response to new innovations and developments.

My best guess is the EOS-90D may be announced some time in early 2019, perhaps around the CES or CP+ Show. Find out what to expect from Canon in terms of product announcement in the next 12 to 18 months. Keep checking back for the latest development and information.

Canon May Announce EOS C900 6K Camera In 2018

Sony announced their CineAlta VENICE 6K camera in September. Canon will most likely announce a 6K camera some time in the first half of 2018. The new camera may be known as the C900 and comes with a new, slightly larger than 35mm, 6K image sensor.

The NAB Show is in April and Canon may announce the new C900 camera around the same time. My readers will recall Canon showcased their 8K camera back in 2015 during the Canon Expo Show in NYC. They may be ready to showcase the camera and technology again in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea in February.

Canon Announced Cinema EOS C200 Camera Firmware Update

Firmware Version 1.0.1.1.00 incorporates the following fix : 

• Fixes a phenomenon in which the start time code is not correctly displayed when MP4 clips captured at 59.94P/50.00P frame rate are imported into NLE software.

*RAW clips are not affected.

Caution : 

You cannot perform the firmware update using CFast 2.0 cards. Please use a commercially available SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card that is 128MB or more for the firmware update.

Firmware version 1.0.1.1.00 is for updating Cinema EOS C200 cameras running firmware version 1.0.0.1.00. If your camera's firmware is already version 1.0.1.1.00, it is not necessary to update the firmware. Once the camera is updated to the latest version, it cannot be restored to a previous version.

Canon’s remarkable CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens was a response to an international plea for a long zoom, Super 35mm lens to extend creative flexibilities in 4K / UHD natural history and documentary productions. The design challenge that Canon faced was significantly elevated by the urging from potential users that the lens be easily portable in the demanding in-the-field situations faced by those originating wildlife productions in remote locations.

The necessary focal range was predicated on the expressed desire to fully frame a subject having a height of four to five feet from a distance of 350 feet. This requirement dictated a focal range of 1000 mm. An additional consensus recommendation from the production community was for the lens to be no more than 15 pounds in weight and 16 inches in length. Canon mobilized the most advanced computer simulation tools to seek the necessary optimization in both the optical system and the optomechanical systems to achieve success.

The design of these lenses leveraged Canon’s decades of expertise in such system designs as well as the deployment of the latest in glass materials to achieve a balance of telephoto 4K optical performance and acceptable image brightness within the physical constraints. The 4K optical performance of the lenses are carefully managed across the entire image plane to ensure superb subjective sharpness especially on the wider angle settings.

As reported earlier, Canon is expected to announce the Cinema C200 camera soon, perhaps in June. This new camcorder is touted to be a 'baby' C300 Mark II and may come with 4K video. Canon XC10 Firmware Version 1.0.3.0 incorporates the following enhancement.
