Canon EOS-1D X Mark III camera firmware version 1.1.0 available for download

Canon Japan and Europe has made the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III firmware update version 1.1.0 available for download.

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following enhancement and fixes :

• The option to capture full HD movies and 4K UHD movies in 23.98p frame rate has been added.
• The communication speed has been improved when connected via wired LAN.
• The "Browser Remote" function has been added.
• The function to transfer only protected images has been added.
• Corrects the phenomenon in which, when the electronic level is set to "Show" in the viewfinder display, in rare cases, the camera may freeze when operating the AF-ON button or shutter button.
• Corrects the phenomenon in which the Custom Shooting Mode settings may change when the shooting mode is switched.

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer and I have returned from a wildlife photography tour of Japan last month to test the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III camera. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak and lock downs in many parts of the world, I am unable to go on more foreign tours to further field test the camera. Once the lock downs are lifted, I will embark on more wildlife trips and add to my review with further comments. As with any new, complicated camera, there will be a new firmware update coming in April to address some minor issues in the EOS-1D X Mark III. Keep checking back for further updates.

New Canon EOS-1D X Mark III firmware coming in April to address issue

My readers know I have recently returned from Hokkaido, Japan to put the EOS-1D X Mark III camera through a real world test. My first review is here. There will be addendum as I go on more wildlife photography tours, further testing the new camera.

I have experienced (once) a seize up with the EOS-1D X Mark II and Mark III bodies when firing in the maximum burst mode, in severely cold weather. A quick pull out and reinsertion of the battery cleared the problem immediately.

In addition, there is a phenomenon, which I have not experienced, as described below :

Phenomenon:

When the camera is used with the electronic level set to “Show” in the viewfinder display, in rare cases, the camera may not perform normally when operating the AF-ON button or shutter button.

Affected Product:

EOS-1D X Mark III (Firmware version 1.0.0)

Workaround:

Use the “Hide” setting for the electronic level in the viewfinder display.

Setting procedure: Menu / Set-up 2 tab / Viewfinder display / Electronic level* [Hide]
*Default setting: [Hide]

In early-April 2020, Canon plans to release a firmware update to address the phenomenon listed above.

Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera announcement coming before CP+ in February 2020

Canon announced their last, top-of-the-line DSLR - EOS-1D X Mark III on January 6, 2020. I have placed my order and will put this camera to my usual real world tests around the globe and write a complete review soon. My current EOS-1D X Mark II has been with me for almost 4 years and will be a trusted backup camera once I take delivery of the Mark III.

It is no secret that DSLR bodies are on their way out. The phase out period is still years away though. Canon will not update their EOS-5D DSLR line any more and is expected to announce a mirrorless version of this venerable camera next month. I bought the first EOS-5D in 2005 for almost $4,000 (a full frame bargain at the time).

The new camera may be called EOS-5R. It will be positioned below the EOS-1D X Mark III and may have the following specifications :

• 40+ MP full frame CMOS sensor
• IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization)
• About 5 stops with IBIS, 8 stops with IS in lens
• 12 fps with Viewfinder, 20 fps with Live View
• Signature scroll wheel in back of camera (finally)
• On / Off switch for Video and Live View
• 8K @ 30 fps RAW, 4K @ 120 fps and 60 fps
• Built-in 5GHz WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS
• Improved LP-E6N battery with longer life
• Magnesium alloy body
• Announcement in February. Delivery in the summer 2020

The 8K video feature is designed to grab attention and will require some cropping. The 40+ MP is also appealing to the megapixel chasing crowd. This will not be the mirrorless camera I buy from Canon. You can read my earlier post on the reason why.

2020 will be a very busy year for Canon and their engineers are working overtime to finally get serious about their place in the post DSLR, future mirrorless camera world. I expect the next top-of-the-line EOS-1D camera to be a mirrorless body but retain almost all the present ergonomics and features of the EOS-1D line and may include the EF/RF mount capability without an adapter. 2021 may be the year, with a late 2020 development announcement. That will be my next camera from Canon, when it happens.
