Keep checking back often as the EOS-R camera specs begin to appear. I am still waiting for more news on the professional model.

Nikon Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Will Have New Mount and Lenses

As reported earlier, Nikon is expected to announce their new full frame mirrorless camera next month but it will come with a new mount and line of lens.

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer. I have been using Canon equipment for over three decades. Follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter, see my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon is also expected to announce their high end, full frame mirrorless camera in September, perhaps just before the Photokina Show on September 26, 2018 in Germany. What I am hoping for is Canon should have enough engineering expertise to overcome the obstacle Nikon cannot, and make their new camera compatible with the entire line of EF lenses without the use of an adapter.

There is probably a 50% chance that will happen but a new mount and line of lenses in not inconceivable. What I prefer is the new camera to use the native EF mount but will accept the addition of a small adapter if that's what it takes to have access to the entire line of EF lenses with the new Canon high end, full frame mirrorless camera. I will not buy the new camera if it requires a new line of lenses.

More leaks and details will be coming out on the new Canon full frame mirrorless camera. Keep checking back here to get the latest details and development.

MELVILLE, NY (JULY 25, 2018 at 12:01 A.M. EDT) – Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the development of a next-generation full-frame (Nikon FX-format) mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses featuring a new mount.

The new mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses that are in development will enable a new dimension in optical performance with the adoption of a new mount. The system is the result of Nikon’s unsurpassed optical and manufacturing capabilities gained through more than a century of imaging expertise. Proven reliability and trusted performance are core traits of Nikon Digital-SLRs, and decades of feedback from professional creators around the world has further contributed to the development of this system.

Through the development of this new mirrorless camera, Nikon reaffirms our commitment to providing photographers with the ability to capture images that are richer and more vivid than ever before.

Additionally, an F-Mount adapter is being developed that will enable the use of a wide variety of F-Mount NIKKOR lenses with the new camera.

Nikon will continue to lead imaging innovation with the launch of the new mirrorless camera and the continued development of Nikon Digital-SLR cameras as well as the impressive NIKKOR lens lineup. Soon, Nikon users will have two industry-leading camera systems to choose from, giving consumers the choice to enjoy the unique values that each system offers.

Canon High End Full Frame Mirrorless Camera and New Super Telephoto Lens Coming Soon

Canon is expected to announce a high end, full frame mirrorless camera very soon, perhaps just before the 2018 Photokina Show since Nikon is also expected to announce their full frame mirrorless camera around the last week of August 2018.

The EOS-90D and EOS-7D Mark III cameras may be announced in Q1 of 2019. In addition, a couple of Super Telephoto lenses are also expected, perhaps around the time of the 2018 Photokina Show in September in Germany as well.

My hope is one of the Big White lenses will be the EF 600mm f/4DO BR. Canon showcased this lens in their Expo back in September 2015 in New York City. Currently, the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II is my favorite DO lens and accompanies me on all my wildlife photography tours but sometimes I can use a bit more focal length.

However, I suspect the Super Telephoto lenses to be announced will be the Series III version of any of the following : EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II, EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II, EF 500mm f/4L IS II or EF 600mm f/4L IS II. Most likely the first two. These lenses are already Very good and any meaningful improvement will be at best marginally. A weight reduction will be most welcome. Some of the Series II lenses reduced about 1 1/2 pound weight from their predecessors.

A few Canon camera bodies have also shown up as the company filed registration papers with certification authorities in various countries.

Canon DS126721 is registered with overseas certification bodies. This is most probably a new Rebel camera with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.

Two DSLR test cameras are code named K436 (EOS-80D Mark II or EOS-90D?) and K437 (EOS-7D Mark III?). Additional mirrorless cameras are code named K424, K433 and EC 811. All the new cameras come with the DIGIC 8 processors.

K424 will be a 30 to 40 MP full frame mirrorless camera with a brand new sensor, dual card slots and a burst rate performance close to the EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera. DIGIC 8+ processor will power the camera and DPAF 4K will come standard with the 4K video. Announcement is expected around the 2018 Photokina Show time frame.

K333 will also be a full frame mirrorless camera but with less features and a lower price.

EC 811 may be the EOS-M5 Mark II APS-C mirrorless camera.

Sadly, I am not convinced the upcoming high end, Canon full frame mirrorless camera will fit my needs unless it comes with the EF mount. These are early days and there is little point in further speculation. Keep checking back for the latest information and development.

New Canon Camera Bodies Showed Up For Certification

Canon is expected to announce a high end, full frame mirrorless camera, the EOS-90D and EOS-7D Mark III in the next 6 to 12 months.

A few Canon camera bodies have shown up as the company filed registration papers with certification authorities in various countries.

K424 will be a 30MP full frame mirrorless camera and announcement is expected in late 2018 or early 2019.

Canon Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Will Come With Brand New Sensor

As reported earlier, Canon's next full frame mirrorless camera will most probably have a brand new sensor, perhaps in the mid 20 to 30 MP range.

Nikon is also planning to announce their full frame mirrorless camera, perhaps some time in mid 2018. Canon is expected to be cautious again and let Nikon take the lead in the new camera introduction. The earliest Canon may announce their full frame mirrorless camera is probably late August 2018, just before the Photokina Show in Germany.

Canon is a huge conglomerate and the biggest photography equipment manufacturer in the world. They have multiple full frame mirrorless projects in their labs. However, unless Canon decides to bring out their full frame mirrorless body with the EF mount, they will still be playing catch up to Sony's formidable line of full frame mirrorless cameras. The successor to the highly acclaimed Alpha A9 will be on the market by then.

The only way Canon can differentiate itself from the pack is to announce a top-of-the-line, full frame mirrorless camera that will interest professional sports and wildlife photographers, and the ace in Canon's pocket is a mirrorless camera with the EF mount, enabling photographers to use the vast array of EF lenses on the market without any cumbersome adapter.

Will The EOS-M1 Be The Upcoming Canon Full Frame Mirrorless Camera?

I am back from my High Arctic Wildlife Photo Tour. It was an enjoyable trip, albeit a bit light on the wildlife but I knew that in advance due to the late summer schedule of the tour. Nevertheless, I came across Polar bears, herds of Musk Oxen and Walruses, Arctic hares and foxes, a pod of Fin whales, seals, stunning sea ice and massive icebergs and glaciers as far as the eye can see.

Getting back to my blog and keeping my readers up to date on the latest photography news and rumors but another trip is coming up next month. You can follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter and see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com.

In the past year, I have been reporting Canon is working on a full frame 'prosumer' mirrorless camera and a professional model using the EF mount. There is no secret Sony is ahead of Canon and Nikon in the mirrorless camera space. Both companies will introduce their own full frame cameras finally next year.

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer, traversing the globe on wildlife photography tours, utilizing and testing Canon equipment for decades. As an observer of Canon for years, I am not a fan of the current crop of mirrorless cameras on the market but will be very interested in Canon's full frame EF mount model once they have decided to announce it.

Canon is a large and conservative conglomerate. They are usually not the first in introducing new, breakthrough photographic equipment but once they have decided to be a player in a particular space, they will devote the resources and marketing clout to make it a success.

The mirrorless market is one area Canon intends to be a winner eventually. In order to achieve that goal, they will have to announce new full frame mirrorless cameras that excite. Their current family of EOS-M models make a difference without a distinction from their competitors.

Nikon is expected to announce their own full frame mirrorless model in 2018. With the usual Canon caution, they may wait till Nikon make their announcement first and follow suit soon afterwards, not unlike the Nikon D5 vs Canon EOS-1D X Mark II rivalry of last year.

Canon EOS-M100 Mirrorless Camera Will Replace EOS-M10

As reported earlier, Canon will announce the replacement to the mirrorless EOS-M10 camera very soon. The new camera will be called the EOS M100 and comes in nine different colors, including black, white and red. It will also be sold with various kits.

The photography world does not need another also-ran mirrorless camera. Canon needs to announce their high end, full frame mirrorless camera with EF mount without further delay. Both Canon and Nikon have been working on their respectively beta cameras and must announce them soon in order not to give Sony too much of a lead in the high end, full frame mirrorless camera space.

EOS-M100 Available kits :

  • Body only
  • EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit
  • Double zoom kit confirmed
  • Other kits are available depending on the country of sale

Canon and Nikon Will Announce Full Frame Mirrorless Camera In 2018

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II vs Sony A9 camera comparison

My readers know me as The Wildlife Ho-tographer. I have been using Canon equipment for over a quarter of a century. Over the years, I have migrated from film to digital cameras but still kept my EOS-1 V, the state-of-the-art Canon film camera announced back in 2000.

Through the decades, I have owned many Canon cameras. My first pro body was the EOS-1 in 1989. Then I bought the first Canon digital camera, the D30 in 2000 and the first 'affordable' full frame digital camera, the EOS-5D in 2005.

Currently, my main bodies are the EOS-1D X Mark IIEOS-1D Mark IV, EOS-5Ds and EOS-7D Mark II. You can follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter. See my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

I have been an observer of Canon for many years now. It is a conservative company and rarely aims to be the first in introducing new technology. Instead, they concentrate on being the brand with the most reliable and state-of-the-art performance equipment.

One area Canon and Nikon have been lagging behind its competitors is in the mirrorless camera space. It is no secret Sony has been pulling ahead of every competitor. Their highly successful A7 series has now been followed by the introduction of the new Alpha A9 model.

Nikon has told DPReview they are also working on a full frame, high end mirrorless camera with the following statement :

"While details are confidential, we can say that we are currently developing new mirrorless products that build upon Nikon’s strengths, and offer the performance prospective customers expect, including the ultimate optics performance, image-processing technologies, strength and durability, and operation."

Sony Alpha A9 camera major specs

  • 24.2MP Full-Frame Stacked CMOS Sensor
  • BIONZ X Image Processor & Front-End LSI
  • 693-Point AF System & 20 fps Shooting
  • Blackout-Free Quad-VGA 3.7m-Dot OLED EVF
  • Internal UHD 4K Video Recording
  • 5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization
  • 3.0" 1.44m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
  • ISO 204,800, Silent Electronic Shutter
  • Built-In Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, Dual SD Slots
  • Integrated LAN and PC Sync Terminals

On paper, the Sony Alpha A9 camera specs look impressive. Of course many of these 'jaw dropping' features are written by marketing folks and are designed to grab the attention of readers. Although, the majority of professional sports and wildlife photographers will not dream of using a mirrorless camera for their work (including yours truly), there is a case for owning a high-end pro mirrorless body for various reasons, as far as I am concerned.

Take a look at my previous post on why many pro sports and wildlife photographers will not dream of using a mirrorless camera for their work.

Canon already has a few variants of high-end, full frame mirrorless cameras in their labs, including one model using the EF mount. They are trying to decide which model to bring to market. The announcement of the Sony Alpha A9 will concentrate Canon's mind and persuade them to finally pull the trigger some time next year.

I know Canon's management has a lot on their plates. They have made it a priority to upgrade their Super Telephoto line of lens and introduce more Diffrative Optics lens models in time for the World's Cup in 2018, Rugby's World Cup in 2019 and Summer Olympics in 2020, both events will be held in Japan.

They are a big enough company to juggle multiple projects at one time and their high-end mirrorless camera project should be one that takes high priority along with the other tasks. I will be very interested in buying their pro model with the EF mount once it is announced. Stay tuned. More to come.

When Is Canon's Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Coming?

Blue-footed Booby

I am still on my Galapagos and Ecuadorian Amazon Photo Tour. Just a quick post to update my readers on the latest development in photography news. You can follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter. See my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

The rumor mill is heating up again about Canon's full frame mirrorless camera. My readers know I have been reporting on this for the past couple of years and this is the best information I have right now.

  • New camera will be full frame and uses the EF mount
  • No new type of lens to accompany camera
  • Camera comes with a new type of sensor
  • Brand new technology to adapt EF lenses to the new sensor
  • Video quality slightly greater than 4K
  • Camera will be announced some time in 2018

Canon is already testing multiple versions of the camera, including hybrid models but I am quite certain only the full frame mirrorless model will be announced. Personally, I think it's about time Canon gives Sony a run for its mirrorless money. Keep checking back for the latest information.

Sony Alpha A9 May Persuade Canon To Announce Their Own Full Frame Mirrorless Camera

Canon EOS-M6 Mirrorless Camera Coming Very Soon

I am still on my Humpback whale photo shoot in Maui. You can follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter. See my equipment bag and works on MichaelDanielHo.com

Apparently, Canon has decided to announce another mirrorless camera and have decided to 'shake things up a bit' by giving it the EOS-M6 designation. It will apprently be another incremental improvement to the current EOS-M3 model.

I wish Canon will stop announcing also ran models and just come out with their full frame mirrorless model with the EF mount. They have been working on it for a long time now and should be very near to perfecting the technology by now.

Sony is still ahead in mirrorless cameras and Canon should just take the gloves off and leap frog them This will give photographers like myself a serious reason to buy a professional grade mirrorless model.

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 15, 2016 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the latest additions to its EOS M series system – the new Canon EOS M5 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera and compact EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens. The EOS M5 camera features a 24.2 Megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor, DIGIC 7 Image Processor and the fastest AF speed in the EOS M-seriesi, enabling photographers to capture clear, sharp, high-resolution images and Full HD videos. It is also the first in the EOS camera line to include the low energy Bluetooth® Smartii feature that can maintain a constant connectioniii with your compatible smartphone or tablet when you use the Canon camera connect application and both applications are active. The versatile EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens is compatible with all Canon EOS M series digital cameras, and is a great option for photographers looking to capture scenic landscapes while traveling to close-up shots from afar.

“The new capabilities found in the Canon EOS M5 Camera and EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens set a new standard for our EOS M series of cameras and lenses, showing that Canon is constantly incorporating performance enhancements desired by our customers,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “When paired together, the new EOS M5 camera and EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens provide image-makers of all levels with powerful tools that enable them to capture a variety of remarkable images and videos.”

In addition, advanced photographers will appreciate the improved operability of the EOS M5 camera. It has a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) and Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF for capturing stills and shooting video with smooth and precise autofocus. This allows for Touch and Drag AF so users can easily switch the subject of their focus by dragging the AF frame directly on the LCD panel, even while looking through the camera’s EVF. Focus peaking allows users to highlight the area of the image that is in focus from within the EVF or LCD monitor. In addition to its touchscreen operability, the EOS M5 camera also has easily accessible dials that allow you to quickly adjust your settings on-the-go.

The Canon EOS M5 also features Combination IS with in-camera 5-axis image stabilization, while capturing video, a first in the Canon EOS series. With a compatible lens attachediv, Combination IS leverages optical IS and in-camera digital IS to help create tremendously smooth videos. The DIGIC 7 Image Processor makes the 5-axis IS possible even with lenses that do not contain IS, because the in-camera image stabilization functions independently to help reduce camera shake when shooting videos.

Additionally, the EOS M5 camera shoots impressive time-lapse videos. The EOS M5 camera also allows for easy panning by setting the optimal shutter speed after analyzing the camera’s panning speed and how fast the subject is moving.

The new Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens offers a high-zoom ratio, expanding the range of photographic possibilities for EOS M digital cameras. Its image stabilizer helps with reducing image blur and making image and video shooting easier at longer focal lengths. Along with the enhanced performance, the EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens is compact and lightweight, making it a versatile and convenient lens to carry.

Pricing and Availability

The new Canon EOS M5 camera is scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers or through the Canon Online store at http://shop.usa.canon.com/ in November 2016, for an estimated retail price of $979.99 for the body only. Canon EOS-M5 Mirrorless Camera Owner Manual Available For Download

Just back from my Polar bear photo tour in Hudson Bay, Canada. It was quite a successful trip even though the weather was 'mild' by sub Arctic standard and the bears were not able to find sea ice to hunt seals even in mid November. Came across sows with cubs, sub adult and full grown males with reasonably healthy looking weight, this time of the year.

In past years, they would have been able to start heading out to the bay and try and replenish their weight by actively hunting seals. I came across the BBC2 film crew filming and broadcasting the Arctic Live series on the tundra.

Now back to my daily routine of photo processing and blog writing until the next wildlife photo tour. You can follow my travels on Facebook , Twitter and see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com.

Key Features of the Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens Include :

  • Canon’s first EF-M high-zoom power lens covering a broad range of shooting scenes with a high-zoom ratio of up to 8.3x (29–240mm equivalent).
  • Compact and lightweight design allows for easy portability.
  • Optical design helps provide excellent image quality across a broad zoom range comparable to the EF-S 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 IS USM lens.
  • Maximum magnification of 0.31x at focal length 150mm.
  • Image Stabilizer effect at up to 4 stops of shake correction helps capture sharp images.

Canon Full Frame Mirrorless Camera On Its Way

I have reported in past months Canon is getting serious about their mirrorless camera line and is working on a full frame mirrorless camera. In addition, Canon's engineers are also working on a full frame, compact mirrorless body as well. There are a few prototypes floating around in their Research and Development labs.

The good news is a high end, full frame mirrorless camera is definitely coming from Canon. The bad news is there will be a longish wait, perhaps late 2017 or early 2018.

The challenge is Canon has to perfect the integration of the full frame sensor to their EF line of lenses, without using an adapter. They already have two other lens format, EF-S and EF-M, and neither one is as successful as the EF mount.

Currently, I am not a fan of mirrorless cameras. However, I can be persuaded to buy one if it meets my requirements. My only 'complaint' about the current Canon bodies that I use for my work, the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS-5Ds, is, they can feel a bit heavy after using it for hours during a wildlife photo shoot.
