Canon celebrates 17th consecutive year as global leader in sales of Interchangeable Lens for Digital Cameras

MELVILLE, NY, March 26, 2020 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc. has maintained the number one share of the global market for interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) for 17 consecutive years from 2003 to 2019.

Canon develops the key imaging system components featured in its EOS series of interchangeable-lens cameras - CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses - under the core concept of, “Speed, Comfort, and High Image Quality.” Offering a wide-ranging product lineup,  from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry level models that allow users to enjoy high image quality shooting with easy operation - Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Digital Rebel (EOS Kiss Digital or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS 1D X series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

Canon introduced new possibilities for photographic expression with the launch of the EOS R System in October 2018. Including such products as the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera and RF lenses that fully leverage the company’s optical technologies, the new products helped further expand the Canon EOS System. In 2019, Canon launched a wide range of products including the EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera in March and EOS 90D DSLR in September. In striving to further expand its lineup, Canon managed to secure the number one share of the global market for the 17th consecutive year.

Canon is also currently developing the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera, equipped with a newly developed full-frame CMOS sensor and featuring high-speed continuous shooting for still images and 8K video recording. The company is also currently developing seven RF lenses and two RF lens extenders, including the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM, and plans to release them throughout the course of 2020. Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology, to expand and create a stronger EOS System for both DSLR and mirrorless cameras. These innovations open up new avenues of image capture to meet the needs of increasingly diverse users and to promote the spread of photo and video culture.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II Lens - $1,599 With Free Shipping

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II zoom lens

I am back home after a rather successful East Africa Wildlife Photo Tour. It will take me a little time to get back in my daily routine and updating my readers on the latest Canon rumors, and photography news in general.

This was my first photo safari of 2017 and this will be another busy season for me. The equipment I brought with me worked well. I used the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, EOS-5Ds cameras, EF 400mm f/4 DO IS IIEF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II lens.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens is my favorite medium zoom lens. This workhorse has been with me on global photo shoots for many years. There is also highly-rated company selling the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens for $1,599, including free shipping on eBay. The regular price is $2,049.

New Canon Patent - 135mm f/2 Lens With Apodization Filters

Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 APD lens

The Japanese photography blog Egami discovered a new Canon patent for a 135mm f/2 lens design with two apodization filters.

The literal translation for Apodization is 'removing the foot'. In the jargon of optical engineers, it's purpose is to remove Airy disks caused by diffraction around an intensity peak, enhancing focus on the subject.

This is not a new optical invention. Canon has it on some EF lenses, so does other manufacturers like Fuji. It announced the XF 56mm f/1.2 APD in 2014.  This is another improvement to Canon's previous patents.

Patent Details (Google Translated)

  • Patent Publication No. 2016-218444
  • Published 2016.12.22
  • Submitted 2015.5.20
  • Focus distance 130.98
  • F-number 2.06
  • AOV 9.38
  • Like high 21.64
  • Overall length of the lens 159.05
  • BF 53.99
  • Good blurred image at all angles, even if there is a vignetting

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III Lens Coming in 2017

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens

Back from my Polar bear photo tour in Hudson Bay, Canada. It was quite a successful trip even though the weather was 'mild' by sub Arctic standard and the bears were not able to find sea ice to hunt seals even in mid November. Came across sows with cubs, sub adult and full grown males with reasonably healthy looking weight, this time of the year.

In past years, they would have been able to start heading out to the bay and try and replenish their weight by actively hunting seals. I came across the BBC2 film crew filming and broadcasting the Arctic Live series on the tundra.

Now back to my daily routine of photo processing and blog writing until the next wildlife photo tour. You can follow my travels on Facebook and Twitter.

Nikon recently announced the latest version of their 70-200mm f/2.8E FL VD ER lens in October. The 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is one of my favorite focal length and a staple for many photographers in wildlife photography shoots.

My sources informed me Canon is also planning to replace their current EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens. It was announced over seven years ago and in light of the recent Nikon's recent release of their latest generation short to medium zoom lens, they may have to 'speed up' the replacement cycle by a bit to meet the demands of professional photographers.

The new lens will be slightly lighter due to advanced optics and comes with the latest coatings and a new Image Stabilization system, with the addition of IS Mode 3. It will be priced higher than the current model and of course, with any future plans, the delivery timetable can change due to unexpected events.
