Canon Super Zoom Lenses Coming For EF and RF Mounts

Japan Patent Application 2018-180203 contains some new Canon Super Zooms lenses for both EF and RF mounts.

EF mount optical formulas included in this patent :

  • EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6
  • EF 35-400mm f/4.5-5.6

RF mount optical formulas included in this patent :

  • RF 25-300mm f/3.5-5.6
  • RF 30-350mm f/2.8-4.5

My current Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS Super Zoom is one of my favorite lenses but it's heavy and a bit dated. I would like to upgrade to a newer model and prefer it to be a bit longer, perhaps 50-500mm.

Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS Super Zoom Lens Coming

Late in 2015, I reported Canon has filed a patent for a Super Zoom EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS lens and is scheduled to release the lens some time in 2017. The EOS-6D Mark II full frame camera is expected to be announced some time in Q1, perhaps before the CP+ Show in Yokohama, Japan.

There is a chance the EF 200-600mm lens may accompany the EOS-6D Mark II during the announcement. My readers know I am not impressed by the Super Zoom models from Sigma and Tamron in the form of a 150-600mm lens. The new Canon lens will not be a 'L' model. That means it will be priced slightly higher than the third parties lens and most probably not weather and dust sealed.

I may be interested in this new lens depending on the built quality but the one Super Telephoto lens I am most interested in is the EF 600mm f/4 DO BR, expected to debut some time next year as well. Keep checking back for the latest info as I receive them.

New Canon Patent For EF 24-300mm f/4-5.6 IS Zoom Lens

Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS super zoom lens

I have just gotten back from my Polar Bear Photo Tour in the Canadian sub Arctic. Trying to catch up on some Canon photo news when I was away. It was quite a productive trip. The weather was 'milder' than past years and I will be processing the photos when I have a chance to rest up and look at them.

The Japanese photography blog, Egami has discovered a new Canon patent for a EF 24-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens. Canon's current super zoom lens, the EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS is my favorite, all-in-one lens when changing glass is impractical due to inclement weather or space restriction.

I was on a South African wildlife photo shoot in September and the EF 28-300mm lens was on one of my cameras all the time. The only 'complaint' is the lens does not accept an extender and the IS is of the older generation, with two IS modes and a 3 stop advantage.

There is definitely a niche market for a professional grade, super zoom in sports and wildlife photography. I will be very interested to trade up to the next generation super zoom if Canon decides to release one in the future.
