Egami of Japan has reported Canon recently patented a 100x zoom lens for compact cameras. It has a focal range of 3.6mm to 340mm. Taking into account the cropping factor of the sensor, that is the rough equivalent of an 18mm -1768mm zoom lens. The original article in Japanese is here.

For the upcoming CES 2014 show in Las Vegas next month, Canon may announce a new SX PowerShot model. The current PowerShot SX50 has a 50X optical zoom capability.
