Canon EOS-7D MK II information

Canon EOS-7D MK II and EF line of lenses

More rumors are coming out about the upcoming release of the Canon EOS-7D MK II camera, widely expected to be announced the early part of 2013. With the phenomenal success of the EOS-1D X camera and the praise it had garnered, including yours truly, Canon has decided to borrow some of the technology from its flagship camera to address some of the weakness of the EOS-7D.

The AF and high ISO performance technology of the EOS-1D X will be used to give the EOS-7D MK II unparalleled features and functionality for an APS-C camera aimed for the Sports and Wildlife photography segment of the market. You can read my EOS-7D post from a few days ago here to get an idea what the new camera may come with and take a look at my EOS-1D X review to see what kind of performance one can expect from the latest Canon technology and know-how. As usual, there are prototype 7D cameras out there and I would welcome anyone to contact me if they come across photographers who are using them.

Canon EOS-6D shipping early next week

Canon EOS-6D with EF 50mm f/1.4 lens

I have been told the long awaited Canon EOS-6D has finally reached our shores and will be shipping out next week to fill the pre-orders. Of course, I remember they said the same thing about the EOS-1D X camera a few months ago and I was one of the early few who placed my order as soon as they were taking the pre-orders. Check with your favorite online merchant or local camera stores for availability.

If the EOS-6D is really shipping next week, it will make a very nice Christmas present under the tree to oneself or someone else. I will be interested in getting hold of one and test it out myself.

Magic Lantern Alpha 3 for Canon EOS-5D MK III

Magic Lantern juices up the Canon EOS-5D MK III

The software team at Magic Lantern is very busy these days. Just yesterday they announced their team has successfully 'hacked' into the Canon EOS-M camera's operating software and will be coming out with enhancement to the camera soon.

Today, Magic Lantern released the Alpha 3 version of the EOS-5D MK III software. The new version comes with a few nice features :

  • Histogram and waveform moved to bottom
  • New experimental display for focus peaking (extreme sharpness)
  • 16:9 bars for anamorphic preview
  • Focus box moves faster (not yet customizable)
  • After taking a picture and pressing Zoom In right away, you can scroll through pictures
  • Saturation boost when adjusting white balance
  • Warnings for bad settings (e.g. if you set picture quality to JPEG instead of RAW by mistake)
  • Dim the red LED while recording, making it less distracting

You can download the software here and visit the Magic Lantern site as well.

Canon EOS-7D MK II specs

Canon EOS-7D MK II

Read the latest post on the EOS-7D Mk II camera here.

One of my most anticipated cameras coming from Canon next year will be the EOS-7D MK II. This top of the line APS-C camera is over three years old and although it was given a Firmware update a few months ago, nothing was done to improve its AF capabilities, frame rates or high ISO performance. The latter being its Achilles' heel. Although the camera is very capable and I have picked it as the best value in DSLR bodies on the market today, its AF functions are a bit dated and the ISO performance beyond 1250 is simply marginal, at best, in my opinion. When the light is good, this camera is hard to beat and the 8 fps burst rate and 1.6X crop factor make this body an ideal wildlife camera for me and I use it as a backup to my EOS-1D MK IV and 1D X cameras.

The EOS-7D MK II is most probably going to have the dual Digic IV replaced by dual Digic V processors. The camera will likely to remain as Canon's top APS-C model with perhaps a low 20 MP sensor, dual memory card slots like the EOS-5D MK III, an improved battery with more power and perhaps a slight ergonomics change.  We should expect an announcement sometime in the first quarter of 2013. Visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see wildlife photos taken by this camera.

Canon EOS-M will have Magic Lantern software

Magic Lantern hacks into Canon EOS-M

The guys at Magic Lantern has done it again. It seems they have successfully accessed the software code of the Canon EOS-M camera. They will be adding some new features to the camera in the near future. You can read about this development on their website.

I have no doubt Canon will be offering a new Firmware soon to correct the slow AF complaints coming from many EOS-M users now that Magic Lantern has cracked the code of the camera. Canon needs to stay one step ahead of these guys in order not to look silly.

Canon EOS-6D camera is available for sale

Canon EOS-6D with 24-105mm f/4L lens

The eagerly awaited Canon EOS-6D camera is available for sale in Asia already. My friend in Hong Kong has informed me of this because he has bought one. It will make a very nice Christmas gift to oneself or someone else if you can't wait. The price is $2,299 but since I do not endorse any retailers on my website or blog, you can contact me if you want the name of the seller.

The camera should be available in North America late this year but judging from Canon's delivery track record in the last few months, I would not be surprised the deadline will slip.

Canon EOS-M new Firmware coming soon?

Canon EOS-M with 22mm STM lens

* * * The newest EOS-M2 camera has been released by Canon * * *

See latest post on EOS-M Firmware Version 2.0 coming on June 27, 2013

The recently introduced Canon EOS-M has generated a lot of interest despite the fact that there is no viewfinder and the AF on the camera is rather 'slow'. The camera is small and perfect for those who want a compact body with EF lens interchangeability.

Rumor is Canon will introduced a new Firmware to redress the AF 'annoyance' before too long and there will be a new model of the EOS-M coming out in the first quarter of 2013 with a slightly bigger body, viewfinder and much improved AF capabilities.

Take a look at my newer post on the EOS-M camera. Exciting things are coming to the EOS-M lineup because Magic Lantern has finally cracked the Firmware code of the camera and they will be adding new features soon, thereby forcing Canon to react and play catch up or end up looking silly. New Canon EF-S Lenses Coming in 2013

A few popular Canon EF-S lenses available now

In addition to the anticipated announcement of the EOS-7D Mk II in the first quarter of 2013, Canon is also expected to come out with Series II versions on some of their most popular EF-S lenses, like the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 and the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5.

There may also be some new EF-S glass in the lineup, like a macro with IS and a fisheye lens. Canon has not completely worked out its new manufacturing processes in their new plants and their supply chains in the rest of Asia, especially China. This may partially explain the delay in the much anticipated release of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X lens. They are hoping 2013 will be a smoother year for them now that the Yen has been slowly dropping against most major currencies and Canon has plenty of introductions waiting to be announced.

Wildlife Photography - Tiger Safari in India

The Tiger is an iconic symbol of conservation. It is a heavily muscled, powerful predator that stalks and ambushes large prey, camouflaged by its stripy coat. Unlike other cats, Tigers are good swimmers and often cool off in lakes and streams during the heat of the day.  Nine different subspecies of this carnivore are recognized, three of which became extinct in the latter part of the 20th century : the Bali , Javan and Caspian Tigers. The remaining subspecies are the Siberian, South China, Sumatran, Indochinese, Malayan and Bengal Tigers. Their characteristic dark, vertical stripes patterning the body vary in their width, spacing, and length, and whether they are single or double stripes. The pattern and distribution of the stripes is unique to each Tiger.  Poaching and habitat loss have occurred throughout much of the Tiger's range and is now severely threatening its survival; as land becomes rapidly developed to meet the increasing demands of the Asian population, Tiger populations become isolated in remaining fragments of wilderness and will ultimately die out.

India is one of the most interesting and last remaining countries to view and photograph Tigers. It is a land of controlled chaos, teaming with sights and sounds, plus a profusion of cultures and races.  The country is also rich in other wildlife, with hundreds of species of birds, plus Leopards, Asiatic Lions, Rhinos, Elephants, Bears, Gaurs and Wild Dogs, just to name a few. Visiting India is quite an exhausting flight for those who live in North America. It takes about 2 days, including layover to get there by plane. From Western Europe, it is about an 8 hour flight. Careful planning is required in order to get the most out of this long journey.

The two central Indian National Parks of Bandhavgarh and Kanha offer the best opportunity to view and photograph Tigers in their natural habitat. The duration of time spent in each park should be at least two to three full days to maximize one's chances of seeing Tigers and other wildlife. Safaris in open top Jeeps, along with elephant-back rides, help track Tigers and other animals. The parks' regulations require a guide to accompany any vehicle entering. The guides are generally very helpful and is a resource in tracking and finding wildlife although it is recommended to bring your own expert guide, if possible.

Bandhavgarh National Park, famous for its 'high'density of Tigers, contains 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds, including Leopards, Jungle Cat, Muntjac and the only four-horned Antelope in the world, the Chausingha. Hemmed in by the Vindhyan mountain ranges, the Park is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Covering an area of 437 sq km, the Park encompasses dense forest, open meadows, wetlands and steep ridges. The Park is named after an ancient fort located in the area. It was once the hunting reserve of the kings of Rewa.

Kanha National Park, with its lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines, provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel, "The Jungle Book". The Park is located in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, came into being in 1955 and forms the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The Park's landmark achievement is the preservation of the rare hardground Swamp Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near extinction. Stringent conservation programs for the overall protection of the Park's fauna and flora, makes Kanha one of the most well maintained National Parks in Asia.

The parks are opened from November to June, although the best months to visit are between November to April. The temperatures in the earlier months are a bit more comfortable but to maximize sightings, March and April are the best, due to the warmer weather but May and June may be too hot for most visitors. Deer and other prey animals are forced to visit waterholes more often during the hotter months and this offers plenty of ambush opportunities for Tigers. Safaris start early with the Jeeps queueing up at the park entrance starting around 6 AM. Each trip usually lasts about 3 hours and the mid afternoon is a good time for the second safari. The temperature in the Parks can be very cold in the early mornings and gets warmer and hotter as the day progresses. The roads are unpaved, rough and dusty. Bumpy rides in the Jeep are guaranteed and part of the fun, with no extra charge.

No one is permitted to wander off on foot inside the parks and the Jeeps are small so a tripod or monopod is of little use. The vegetation is thick and the Tigers are experts in concealment. They can be almost 'invisible' in the thick jungle, just a few feet from you. I generally prefer to use a zoom lens since there is no telling where they may pop up but the best combo is to have two cameras ready. I use the Canon 7D with the 400mm f/4 DO lens and the Canon 1D MK IV with the 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS or the 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS lens. Visit the Equipment  page on my website to see these gear. Since the lighting is usually fair to poor, I set the apertures of the lenses wide open with ISO setting of 800 and going all the way to 3,200 if required.

It is truly a rare privilege for any photographer to come face to face with a Bengal Tiger in the wild. I came across this one year old cub and we exchanged eye contact for a little while before he disappeared into the bush. It was a very memorable moment for me and I will cherish it for a very long time. Visit the Tiger  page on my website to see more exciting photos from India and watch the slide show on my website as well.

Canon PowerShot G15 Technical Report

CanonPowerShot G15

The Canon Camera Museum has put out an interesting technical report on the latest PowerShot model, the G15 and it has a comparison chart between the G15 and the G12.  This is probably the best PowerShot model to date and for those who like to carry a point-n-shoot camera with some DSLR features and functions, the G15 is hard to beat.

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS II coming in 2013?

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS lens

The Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS lens is the last remaining Series I super telephoto lens on the market. All the other super telephoto lenses have been replaced by the Series II versions. The current EF 800mm is big and heavy, weighing in at just a tiny bit short of 10 pounds.

The rumor is the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS lens may be in for a remake. The recent release of the Series II super telephoto lenses is a big hit, especially with the weight reduction. Canon may be trying to take advantage of this lighter weight technology and come out with a Series II model some time in 2013.

Nikon will be coming out with their 800mm f/5.6 VR lens soon and it is supposed to be much lighter. Canon will certainly match Nikon in the weight reduction game. Before they do that, they still have to release the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X lens. I am getting a bit tired waiting for the official introduction.

Canon EOS-1D MK IV vs. EOS-7D analysis

I have been a wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for 25 years and often asked by photo enthusiasts, whether the Canon 1D MK IV or the 7D is a better camera and which body do I prefer. This is not an easy question to answer. First, a little background would be in order. I have been using Canon equipment for about 25 years. I started out with the Canon EOS-10 and the EOS-1 in 1989.  When Canon first introduced their D30 digital camera in 2000, I bite the bullet and bought the body. It was SO expensive but I wanted to experiment with the new technology.  Since then I have used every DSLR Canon has introduced, leading up to the 1D MK IV and 7D bodies, which I currently own.

First, let us get the major specs out of the way. The 1D MK IV has a 45-point AF system including 39 cross-type points, a new AI Servo II AF focus tracking system with improved algorithm combined with 10 fps continuous shooting. It has an APS-H sized 16.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors, an ISO range of 100 - 12800 (up to 102400 in H3 mode).

The 7D has an APS-C size 18 megapixel CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors, with ISO range from 100 - 12800 and speeds of up to 8 fps. It comes with the new, all cross-type 19-point AF system with improved AI Servo II AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF area selection modes. It also has an Intelligent Viewfinder, an entirely new technology, provides approximately 100% coverage and displays user-selected AF modes as well as a spot metering circle and on demand grid lines.

Both set of specs look impressive but how do they perform in real world environment? I add the Canon BG-E7 grip to the 7D to give it a 1D like feel and have taken both cameras out on many photo shoots under harsh environments. A few things stand out in my mind concerning the EOS 1D Mk IV :

#1 - MK IV beats the 7D hands down under harsh weather conditions because of its all weather sealing. I was soaked from head to toe inside a zodiac in the Sea of Cortez, in rough seas, a few years ago but the 1D MK IV with the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II kept working without any fuss.

#2 - The MK IV's superior AF focusing and lock gives it the advantage, especially under poor lighting and focusing on moving objects.  This can make the difference between getting the shot or a better shot vs. not getting it at all.

#3 -  MK IV's high ISO noise reduction is superior to the 7D, although I would not go over 3,200 and 2,000 respectively for either camera when photographing moving subjects. Can't wait for my 1D-X to arrive so I can put it through more real world tests to confirm Canon's claims for the new camera. This will be the subject of another blog once I get the camera in June, hopefully.

The APS-C sensor does have an advantage over the APS-H because of its additional reach. Normally I avoid using extenders unless it is absolutely necessary. This is why I reach for the 7D first when the subject is far away and I cannot get any closer.

Now comes the other specs. The 1D MK IV and 7D list for $5,000 and $1,700 respectively. This means the first camera costs almost 3 times more than the second one, does it take a photo 3 times better?  The answer is of course, no, but this is the wrong way to compare two different bodies. First, there are so many factors that enter into the equation to capture a good photo. Both cameras can produce excellent images but in my opinion, the 7D is the best value in a cropped-frame DSLR on the market today and is an easy choice for those with limited money to spend. If you photograph a lot of wildlife and can afford it, I would get both cameras because combined with the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II and 400mm DO lenses plus extenders, you can get an almost infinite number of focal lengths, ranging from about 90mm to over 1000mm, while handholding the package for maximum mobility. Visit my Equipment page to see how I deploy these gear on photo shoots.

Enclosed are 4 photos taken with both cameras.  Can you identify which photo was taken by which body? Visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see many more wildlife photos taken by both cameras.

I have bought the Canon EOS-1D X and have put it through many vigorous photo shoots around the globe and found it to be the best wildlife camera for my purpose, especially when combined with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS lens. Take a look at my review of the camera here and visit my website to see more wildlife photos taken with the new gear.

Canon Rebates on selected lenses and Speedlites

Just in time for the holiday shopping season. Rebate ends on December 1, 2012. Some of these lenses are very nice to have, like the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II and the EF 200mm f/2.8L II. Both excellent lenses and very good value with the rebate. You can see the images I shot with both of these lenses on my website MichaelDanielHo.com

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS and EF 35mm f/2 IS sample images

Canon EF 35mm and EF 24-70mm USM lenses

Canon UK has posted some sample images from two recently announced lenses - the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS and EF 35mm f/2 IS. They are high resolution photos and show very good details. You can see the images and read about the specifications of each lens by clicking on the links below.

I am excited by the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS and will postpone upgrading to the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II until I have an opportunity to try out the new lens. With the excellent high ISO performance of the EOS-1D X camera, having a f/2.8 lens over the f/4 may not be that big of an advantage for me anymore.

Canon files patent for two 4/3 lenses

Canon 12-28mm f/2-3.2

Canon 14-28mm f/1.4-2.4

Our friends in Japan, Egami, the photography blog has discovered two new patents filed by Canon Japan for two lenses with the 4:3 ratio. The Blog is written entirely in Japanese and the Google translation is not very good but this may suggest Canon is working on another sensor format.

This is nothing unusual. Canon is a big company and spends a lot in R&D. However, they are 'slow' in their product introduction. Case in point is their EOS-M camera, which came out after almost every camera manufacturer has introduced their models.

Canon to announce new products in February and March 2013

A new Canon EOS-M camera coming in 2013?

The long awaited Canon EOS-7D MK II?

The word is Canon is finally ready to make some 'major' product announcements in the first quarter of 2013. They have been battling natural disasters in Japan and anti-Japanese riots in China recently. These unwelcome distractions are taking a toll on their product introduction plans because they affect their overseas factories which are so critical in their supply chain operations. The most likely months for the announcements will be around February and March of 2013. There will be back to back introductions of new camera bodies and lenses.

One of the most eagerly awaited introduction will be the replacement to the EOS-7D. I have picked this camera to be Canon's best value in DSLR today but the model is almost 3 years old and desperately needs an upgrade. Take a look at my previous post on this topic.

The other announcement may be a new EOS-M model, with a slightly bigger body and a viewfinder, faster AF capabilities and new prime and zoom lenses to complement the new camera.

The last announcement may be the long awaited, big megapixel camera 'development' project. This will not be a EOS-5D MK IV and if it is another 1D series body, it may be called the EOS-1D S. The sensor will be over 40 MP and the new camera should contain 'revolutionary' features since Canon wants to leapfrog Nikon with all their big megapixel cameras on the market already.

Canon's plans for early 2013

New Canon megapixel camera coming in 2013?

Remember the rumors of the all the successor cameras to Canon's current lineup that should have been announced by now?  It seems Canon has once again been occupied by final design and production changes to their super lens - EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X, much like earlier this year when they were busy trying to finalized the introduction of the Series II super telephoto lenses.

The word is the EOS 7D MK II or perhaps the EOS-70D and of course, another new EOS Rebel may be announced in early 2013. The EOS 7D is almost three years old and desperately needs an upgrade. The slow AF speed of the EOS-M is attracting many criticism and Canon may introduce new Firmware and faster lenses to address that issue.

Finally, the talk about Canon's own megapixel camera to compete with Nikon's current lineup of big megapixel cameras. Canon is probably going to leapfrog Nikon with their own megapixel camera, much like their EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X lens has outdone Nikon's 200-400mm offering. The new camera may have a sensor of over 40 MP and will be packed with state of the art technology that may be revolutionary.

Why is the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X delayed?

EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X test trial in Africa

EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X test trial in 2012 Olympics

The Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X lens is probably the most anticipated lens in Canon's history. Its development was announced over 18 months ago and the lens went through extensive testing in many parts of the globe. However, the world is still waiting for its official introduction.

Rumor is the recent extensive tests during the London Olympics in August have produced many valuable feedback and Canon is working through them meticulously to ensure a problem-free production model. There is still a chance we may see the official launch of this revolutionary lens before the end of the year. I will try to be one of the first people to place my order when it is available.

Canon PowerShot S110, G12, G15 reviews

Canon S110, Canon G15 and Canon G12, side by side

For those who are in the market for an excellent point-n-shoot camera, Canon's PowerShot series is one line of cameras you should look seriously. The following articles should give you a good comparison of the three most popular models. The Canon S110 was introduced not long ago but the Canon PowerShot G12 was recently replaced by the G15 but there are still many new G12s out there that you can buy from camera stores.

Canon EOS-M review

The Canon EOS-M is now readily available in most camera stores. It is a good walk around camera with an excellent line of lenses available for almost any situation. The most annoying thing about the EOS-M is its slow AF speed but its versatility makes up for its 'flaw'. DigitalRev has posted a new review of the camera. You can view the video by clicking on the link above.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II review

Recently, I borrowed the Canon EF-24-70mm f/2.8L II lens from a friend of mine for a walk around shoot to see if it is worth my while to upgrade from the Series I model. My primary photography is Wildlife and Travel, in that order. Therefore, I have limited use for a zoom lens with this focal length.

The lens has an excellent feel, slightly shorter and lighter than its predecessor. It is fast, sharp and has great color contrast. It takes the 82mm filter, so for anyone upgrading from the Series I lens, you will need to buy additional filters unless you happen to own the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II lens as well. The improvement to the Series I lens is marginal but the price is much higher. At a list price of $2,299, I find it hard to justify upgrading to the Series II, especially when the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS is just round the corner at a list price of $1,499.

If you feel you must have the highest quality 24-70mm f/2.8 lens on the market and you don't already own the Series I model and can afford this lens, go for it. However, if you want to wait a few months until the supply becomes more adequate and the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS hits the market, you might save yourself some money. Visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see photos taken with both of these lenses.

Canon EOS-M review and sample photos

Canon EOS-M with 18-55mm STM lens

DPreview has a good review on the EOS-M, Canon's first mirrorless camera and they have just posted a big variety of sample photos. Although the slow AF speed of the EOS-M is well known, the camera still comes through with very good performance. You can take a look at the review and sample photos by visiting their website.

I have returned from my Polar Bear photo shoot. The Canon EOS-1D X and EOS-1D MK IV were my main equipment and they came through with flying colors under VERY cold conditions and temperatures. You can read my EOS-1D X review here see the photos as well.

Canon announces new lens caps

Canon announced a new line of pinch lens caps for their entire lineup. The newly designed Mark II lens caps incorporate a hook mechanism in the middle of the cover. Depressing the hook allows quick removal and installation of the cap, especially when the lens hood is in place.

The new lens caps will roll out starting January, 2013 and will come with any new lens but the caps are also available for purchase separately.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS and EF 35mm f/2 IS officially announced

Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS and EF 24-70mm f/4L IS

London, UK, 6 November 2012 – Canon today adds to its world-famous EF lens series with the launch of two models designed for enthusiasts and professionals – the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM and EF 35mm f/2 IS USM. Offering first-class optical technologies alongside highly compact designs, the new lenses are perfect for a range of creative purposes, including reportage, landscape, portrait, and travel photography.

Ideal for use alongside DSLRs like the new EOS 6D, both new lenses utilise the latest Canon technologies to consistently deliver superb results. Both include aspherical lenses and Super Spectra Coatings optimised for each individual element, Canon’s industry-leading Image Stabilizer (IS) technology and Ultrasonic Motors for superfast

Auto Focus (AF) – providing outstanding optical performance. The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM is also the latest lens to feature Hybrid IS, delivering shakefree shots at any distance, including at macro focal lengths.

EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM  –  US list price $1,499

The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM is the latest addition to Canon’s elite L-series, and expands the range of standard zoom EF lenses available for both professional and amateur photographers. Ideal for reportage and wedding photography, it combines an essential everyday focal range with a premium quality L-series construction, delivering consistently sharp, professional-quality stills in a range of different situations. A new macro function also optimises the placement of lens groups during macro photography, allowing shooting at a maximum magnification of 0.7x – reducing the need for photographers to carry a dedicated macro lens.

Its first-class optical system includes two aspherical elements alongside two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lenses, each with optimised Super Spectra Coatings to minimise chromatic aberration, colour blurring and flare. A constant f/4 aperture throughout the zoom range provides photographers with exceptional creative control, allowing blurring of the background of a scene at all focal lengths. A nine-blade circular iris also assists photographers in making their subjects stand out, delivering beautiful out of focus highlights (bokeh) in the background blur to add atmosphere to a shot.

The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM also features a newly designed IS system, delivering blur-free images throughout the zoom range. Canon’s advanced optical IS offers a 4-stop light advantage, while Hybrid IS effectively compensates for angular and shift shake during macro shooting for stable close ups.

Superfast AF performance is provided by a small, ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM). Working in combination with a high-performance CPU and advanced AF algorithms, USM technology enables accurate, silent and ultra-responsive autofocusing. Full-time manual focusing also ensures adjustments can be made even when AF is engaged.

The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM features a high grade, usability-focused design – both inside and out. The exterior features a high quality leather-texture coating, a revised shape ensures ease-of-use, and the focusing and zoom rings have been designed for optimal operation. Additionally, a dust and drip-proof construction is resistant to dust and moisture, a lock function protects lenses from knocks when travelling, while fluorine coating minimises the amount of dust, dirt and fingerprints that adhere to the front and rear lenses – helping to maintain superior image quality and reduce the need for cleaning.

EF 35mm f/2 IS USM  –  US list price $849

The new EF 35mm f/2 IS USM is designed to offer outstanding flexibility – allowing photographers to capture an even broader range of scenes and subjects in wide-angle. The lens is Canon’s first-ever 35mm prime to feature optical Image Stabilizer technology, which combines with high quality optics to offer outstanding performance from a lightweight, compact body. The 35mm focal length also provides the ability to capture everything from close-up portraits to wide-angle landscapes, making it an ideal companion for travel or general reportage photography.

Its advanced specification offers photographers great flexibility to shoot a wider-range of scenes and subjects. A bright, fixed f/2 aperture also allows photographers to employ a shallow depth of field, and optical IS offers users a 4-stop light advantage, allowing the capture of blur-free images in low light conditions when shooting handheld. Intelligent detection of panning motion is also supported, with Panning IS mode automatically engaged to enable photographers to capture movement with greater accuracy.

Designed to deliver exceptional image quality, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM features an aspherical glass-moulded (GMo) element positioned at the rear of the optical path to correct aberration for the entire optical system. Additionally, each individual element features optimised Super Spectra coatings to reduce ghosting and flare – ensuring excellent colour balance with minimal need for post processing. A combination of a ring-type USM and high performance CPU also provides rapid AF performance, with full-time manual focus also available for users who want to retain maximum control.

New Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 II on its way?

A replacement to the venerable Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens may be on its way. The upgrade is way overdue and this lens is one of Canon's best value. Its cost is a fraction of the EF 50mm f/1.2L lens and yet the performance is very close. The rumor is there is also a Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS lens waiting to be announced.

I am heading home from my Polar Bear Safari. Had a great time and the Canon EOS-1D X camera performed flawlessly in the severe cold and wind. Will write another review on the camera upon my return.

Wildlife Photography - Polar Bear Safari, Day 11

Sleeping Beauties

I just can't get enough of these guys. They are so cute and lovable we must do everything to ensure their long term survival. The environment they live in is complex and under threat. We must reduce the number of indigenous hunts for 'survival and traditional' needs and start reversing the process of the massive melting during the summer months of the polar ice caps and sheets that the bears are totally dependent on for their livelihood.
