Canon Executives Talk Strategies And Technology

Canon Japan headquarters, Tokyo.

Recently, a group of high ranking Canon officials received 20 journalists from Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The meeting was held at the headquarter of Canon Inc. in Shimomaruko, Tokyo, Japan.

Tatsuo Yoshioka, Senior General Manager ICP Strategic Management Planning Center – Image Communication Products Operations Canon Inc., said that the compact and video camera market decreased in 2013 but the DSLR market increased by more than 10%.

Ken-ichi Shimbori, Advisory Director – Group Executive ICP Group 2 – Image Communication Products Operations Canon Inc., head of the DSLR group, presented the market shares: 45% in the world and 43% in Asia. The merit, according to Mr. Shimbori, goes to three key concepts featured on Canon DSLRs: fast AF, easy operation and high image quality. Mr. Shimbori said the EOS-6D is the most compact and lightest full-frame camera in the world. The reason for the high image quality relies in the gap-less microlenses featured on Canon’s digital sensors.

Masato Okada, Executive Officer – Group Executive of ICP Group 1 – Deputy Chief Executive of Image Communication Products Operations Canon Inc., said that the supremacy of Canon DSLR cameras is related to the high quality of Canon’s EF lenses. Canon EOS-1D C Firmware For 25p In April

The Canon Germany website reports the EOS-1D C Firmware for 25p comes out in April, about the same time as the new Firmware for the EOS-5D Mk III. The software team in Canon is busy trying to code as fast as possible. You can read the article here and use Google to translate it.

However, there is still no substitute for coming out with new hardware, like the EOS-7D Mk II and the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X Super Telephoto lens. We are still waiting, Canon.

Canon develops feature upgrade for the world’s first 4K DSLR, the EOS-1D C

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 30 January 2013 – Canon today announces the development of a new feature upgrade for the ground-breaking EOS-1D C. The upgrade has been developed taking into account feedback from the European professional video community, and adds support for 25p recording at the camera’s maximum 4K resolution.

Designed for the motion picture, television and high-resolution production industries, the EOS-1D C is the world’s first DSLR to support 4K video capture. It offers a unique, highly portable package optimised for ultra-high quality recording, delivering exceptional low light performance and film-like dynamic range from a highly-compact body that can be used in a wide-range of shooting situations.

The EOS 1D-C captures 4K (4,096 x 2,160) video using 8-bit motion JPEG compression, with the ability to simultaneously output an uncompressed Full HD (1920x1080) YCbCr 4:2:2 signal to an external recorder via its HDMI terminal. Full HD video can also be recorded direct to CF cards at frame rates of up to 1080/60p, whilst Canon Log Gamma ensures video is rich in exposure latitude and dynamic range – offering outstanding freedom for video professionals during shooting, and for colourists in post-production.

The new feature upgrade will be available free of charge from April 2013.

This firmware update is to improve operational function in response from several professional
photographers that the Image Selection button was pressed without realizing and the image size had been changed. Also, this firmware incorporates quality issue fixes that have been reported from the market.

1. Details of Functional Improvements and Fixes

1-1. The function to disable the Image Size selection button is added.

1-2. Fixes Err 70 and Err 80 which may occur depending on the camera settings, shooting scenes, or the timing of releases. Also, some complained camera freeze when Err 80 occurred.

The above mentioned (1-2) phenomenon occur in very rare instances. In addition with the firmware update for 1-1, the fixes for these phenomena have been incorporated.

a) Err 70

In customization of operational buttons, there were errors in operational program for the exposure level display in the viewfinder when the Main Dial is set to change the aperture value in Manual mode, and may cause Err 70.

b) Err 80

Err 80 may occur depending on the distance to the subject, shooting scenes, or the timing of metering.

This phenomenon occurs in very rare instances due to the error in operational program for metering when shooting a subject at a distance with telephoto lenses with focal lengths of 300 mm or 400 mm.

New Canon PowerShot Cameras For CP+ Show

New PowerShot camera announcement soon?

Apparently Canon has decided to disappoint a lot of people by not planning to announce any major product introduction during the CP+ Photo and Imaging Show in Yokohama, Japan on January 31. Word is only new PowerShot cameras will be introduced. You can read this Japanese article and its translation to get a bit more information.

Can we at least get some official word on the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X lens and the EOS-7D MK II camera? The silence is deafening to my ears.

Canon EOS-1D X Firmware 1.2.1 Coming On January 30

Canon is expected to release a new Firmware, version 1.2.1, for their flagship camera, the EOS-1D X on January 30, 2013. I love this camera. You can take a look at my review here.

The following is from Canon :

We are releasing Firmware version 1.2.1 for EOS -1D X for service prior to the Web announcement. We are planning to make this firmware available on the Web for download in late January 2013.

In addition with the firmware update for 1-1, the fixes for these phenomena have been incorporated.

a) Err 70

Canon's Roadmap For 2013

Canon's EF and EF-S line of  Prime, Zoom and Super Telephoto lenses

There are rumors Canon will be introducing fewer new products this year than last. The long awaited EOS-7D MK II camera and the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4X Super Telephoto lens will probably be announced some time in the middle of the year. A new EOS Rebel (700D) and the EOS-70D cameras will apparently be first to come on the market followed by a new EOS-M mirrorless camera with faster AF and a viewfinder.

In addition, there may be three to four new EF and EF-S lenses coming. Perhaps, the much sought after EF 100-400mm f/4-5.6L IS II may be released finally. If these rumors proved to be somewhat true, Canon could be experiencing some manufacturing and engineering difficulties. They are behind Nikon on the mega-pixel and some high end lens race. The Nikon D800 camera with a 36MP sensor and the AF-S 200-400mm f/4 lens have been out for a while and have received raved reviews. It is time for Canon to answer the challenge and leapfrog the competition. The Japanese Yen has dropped dramatically in the last few months due to the new government's intervention. The business climate is superb for companies like Canon to export more. The time has never been better to rise up to the occasion and perform now.

We should know more as time goes by and the year is still young. Subscribe to my Blog and I will keep you posted on more news, rumors and further development.

Canon EOS-70D Camera Coming Next Week?

Canon EOS-70D camera with its advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology is available

The CP+ Photo and Imaging Show starts in Yokohama, Japan on January 31. Still no word on what Canon will announce during the show. There is a decent chance the EOS-70D may be introduced and the news from camera dealers around the country is the EOS-60D's stock is getting low.

The EOS-70D is rumored to have a sensor of 18MP, Digic 5+ processor and built-in WiFi and GPS, much like the EOS-6D. Canon is way behind on new product introduction this year. I hope they are not experiencing manufacturing and engineering setbacks again.

Canon Interview Talks EOS-7D MK II and EOS-1D C

Japanese dc.watch.impress published an interview with Canon’s Managing Director, Mr. Masaya Maeda. The article is long and in Japanese. The interview touches on many aspects of Canon’s strategies. You can read the original article here, and the machine translation by Google is also available, although it is rather poor and missed a lot of the original meaning.

The interview topics include the following :

  • Cinema EOS and video features of DSLRs
  • EOS-1D C
  • EOS-7D MK II
  • Mirrorless Camera strategy
  • PowerShot N

Apparently, EOS-7D Mark II will not be announced at the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan next week. Instead, Canon may announce the development of the MK II with a later date for official release. Also, there may be a Firmware update to the EOS-1D C camera coming very soon. Canon EOS-7D Mk II and EOS-70D cameras

Please read the most current post to get the latest news on the EOS-7D Mk II

It is about one week before the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show starts in Yokohama, Japan. Canon is still playing its cards VERY close to the vest by not leaking any new camera announcements for the show.

The EOS-70D is expected to have WiFi and GPS, following in the footsteps of the EOS-6D camera but the EOS-7D MK II is expected to have a new sensor and perhaps dual Digic 5+ processors to keep this camera as the flagship model of the APS-C cameras for Canon. We should hear something soon, by hook or by crook. Someone, somewhere will leak something before the show opens.

Canon EOS-6D Body For $1,899 Shipped

Canon EOS-6D with EF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens

The Canon EOS-6D body is now selling for $1,899 on the Internet, including free shipping within the United States. I am not surprised. Although the EOS-6D is a good camera, it is still an entry level full frame DSLR with some gee-whiz stuff like WiFi and GPS, etc. To me, that is less useful than real features like more AF points, better ISO and frame rate performance, like its big brother, the EOS-5D Mk III.

You can read my comparison of the two cameras and decided for yourself. The EOS-5D MK III has also come down in price as well and one can find good deals on the Internet either new or refurbished. Visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see photos taken with both cameras.

Canon Fights Counterfeit Cameras and Accessories

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., January 15, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has rolled out a consumer-safety initiative that will promote awareness of a consumer electronics industry-wide issue: the risks of using counterfeit accessories for digital cameras and camcorders, especially batteries and chargers. Counterfeit products are fake replicas of the real products, designed to take advantage of the superior value of the real product. These fake accessories are produced in a manner that is increasingly more difficult for average consumers to identify. Purchase of these products can lead to potentially dangerous results. Unlike genuine Canon products, counterfeit accessories may not meet government and industry safety standards and may overheat, smoke, melt, ignite and may cause bodily injury and property damage.

In support of this initiative, a digital campaign, with the tagline, “Play it safe. Power your Canon with Canon Power” was launched on January 8, advising consumers to avoid counterfeits by purchasing products through established retail channels. In addition, the Canon USA Website has been enlisted to educate consumers on the Canon batteries and chargers most frequently counterfeited and to provide helpful tips to spot them.

“Canon takes safety seriously and, as good corporate citizens, we want to inform and educate so that consumers are aware of the risks counterfeit products pose,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “We will be rolling out an initiative over the next few months, encouraging consumers to help play it safe with genuine Canon power when making an investment in a camera or camcorder and its accessories, so that they may continue to enjoy the quality experience they expect from us.”

Canon Patent To Reduce Noise and Aliasing

Canon EOS-7D MK II coming soon?

Canon Japan has filed a patent to reduce the noise and aliasing in small pixels, as reported by our Japanese Photography Blog friend, Egami. This technology will greatly improve the image quality and high ISO performance of sensors, especially the APS-C cropped frame cameras. The EOS-7D is my pick for the best value in DSLR cameras today except its mediocre high ISO performance. This new patent may dramatically help the ISO performance of the MK II version in the future and you can read my review of the current camera here.

You can also read the translated article on the new patent here and visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see photos taken with the EOS-7D body.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Review

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS lens is avaiable now and I have used it for a few days and found the lens to be a delight. Overall, the image quality is excellent. The 4 stop IS performed flawlessly, chromatic aberrations and vignetting are well under controlled, on both full and cropped framed bodies but the real pleasant surprise is the beautiful bokeh the lens creates, when used wide open. There is some softness around the outer corners but stepping the lens down by one stop increases the sharpness dramatically. This is common on almost any lens and not a concern to me.

For those who need a wedding or landscape lens and is contemplating or not willing / unable to buy the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II, this lens is a perfect choice, especially if one has the EOS-1D X body as well. This piece of glass reminds me of the choice between the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS vs. the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Both are excellent lenses but I chose the latter, at the time, because I needed the faster aperture. Had the EOS-1D X been available, I would have purchased the f/4 lens instead, and save some money and weight in the process.

Visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see photos taken with both lenses.

Wildlife Photography - Whales In Baja, Mexico - Day 7

A Tail Of Two Cities

Film crew and photographers working for production companies and magazines have a budget to work with. They can charter vehicles and boats, stay out much longer to get the proper shots without having to compete for space with other people to get the right angles for that spectacular photo or film clip.

Once in a while, I will charter my own vehicle or boat if the situation calls for it but in order to cut down on expenses, I generally go with commercial wildlife touring companies catering to the public. I pick these companies carefully for their professionalism and integrity. Most of the time, it works out well but once in a great while, one comes across a self-centered moron, bent on taking a 'great' photo with a point-n-shoot camera and blocking everybody else's view in the process. I met one of these rare individuals on this trip.

When I was in the Canadian tundra a couple of months ago, we were traveling in a small bus one day. Suddenly, we spotted a Polar bear mother and two cubs far off the road. The bus came to a quick stop but the bears saw the bus, paused and gave us a momentary look, before deciding to make a run for it. The only open window available to me was about a 6 x 9 inch opening. The guy sitting there already had his video camera pointing through the opening and shooting. He saw me grabbing my camera equipment and graciously let me have the window, saying if he can't get a good shot of the situation, at least one of us will get it. Such courtesy is greatly appreciated. Thanks, David.

The human eye is the best camera and the human mind is the fastest and most vivid memory card one can own. There are many times I do not try and chase a photo when it's futile to do so and just let my eyes and brain do the recording.

I photographed this Humpback in Cabo San Lucas. It looks very familair to me because of its all white fluke and I am almost positive we have met each other in Laihana, Hawaii before. When I return home, I will check my photo library to confirm it.

More Canon EOS-M Lenses Coming Soon

I am still on a photo shoot in Baja, Mexico but rumor is there will be more Canon EOS-M lenses coming soon, perhaps three new ones - a new prime, a longish zoom, perhaps up to 300mm and an even longer zoom lens may appear later with another EOS-M body, most probably with a built-in viewfinder.

Wildlife Photography - Whales In Baja, Mexico - Day 6

Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful and happy to do what I am doing but it's just human nature to try and top one's last best encounter with mother nature and that's not easy to do, thereby setting oneself up for disappointment. One must temper one's expectations and take things as they come.

Mexico is a relatively 'young' country by comparison to some Asian or European nations' history but it has a rich Mayan heritage and culture spanning thousands of years. The richest person in the world is a Mexican by the name of Mr. Carlos Slim. He has surpassed Bill Gates a few years ago as reported by informed sources. In all fairness to Mr. Gates, he has given away billions of dollars to charity already but is not contemplating renouncing his remaining wealth and joining the Order of Franciscan monks in Asisi, Italy.

The country of Mexico has not been involved in whaling in its history and has passed laws to protect whales since the 1960s. The United States passed legislation in the 1970s to stop large scale whaling but a small number of whales are still being killed for reasons deemed legitimate and necessary.

Came across this Humpback mother, calf and escort. The escort is a male who accompanies the mother in the furloin hopes of mating with her. The calf is perhaps only about a month old and seems to be exploring its body parts. I watched it playing with its flippers, then its tail and the little guy got tired already. But it put on a good show for me before it was all over. Looks like I am destined not to see any breachings on this trip. As you can see from the photos on my website, I have no right to expect to see any more breachings after I have caught so many of them already.

Wildlife Photography - Whales in Baja, Mexico - Day 5

Weather improved quite a bit, so did my health. No more aches but still low energy level and the whale action is still nothing to write home about. Maybe it's because I am spoiled by my many other whale encounters in all my years of wildlife photography. It takes a lot to get me excited now.

Came across quite a few pods of Bottled-nosed and Common dolphins hanging around the Humpbacks. The whales are not particulalry enamored of these cetacean friends. Also came across a small number of Grays whales but mostly Humpbacks. On the bright side, I am getting quite a nice tan.

Wildlife Photography - Whales in Baja, Mexico, Day 4

Just below the State of California in the United States lies Baja California, a part of Mexico with a very long, 'thin' peninsula stretching south for a few hundred miles. The Pacific Ocean is on the right and the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) is on the left. Along the southern part of Baja lies many lagoons and Gray whales have been visiting these waters and giving birth to calves for generations. In addition to Gray whales, Humpbacks, Minkes, Blues and even Sperm whales visit the sea and waters around the peninsula, although the most common species of whales one encounters are Grays and Humpbacks.

I didn't feel well yesterday. My body was aching all over and I felt very tired. Feels like I am coming down with something. The day did not start out well. The weather was dreadful, the whale action is, at best, fair. Saw only Humpbacks, no breachings, a couple of head lungeings, some flippering and flukes, that's all. To add insult to injury, I came down with motion sickness on the small boat. It doesn't happen often but once in a while I do get seasick. This happens to be one of those times. However, I saw something new on this trip - Rough-toothed Dolphins. Although I was too sick to do much photography. Let us hope my luck turns better and my body improves soon.

Wildlife Photography - Whales in Baja, Mexico

Humpback whale breaching in Banderas Bay, Mexico

I am off to Baja, Mexico for a great whale photo shoot this weekend. Every year around this time, Humpback and Gray whales come down from the frigid waters in Alaska to the warmer seas around the west coast of Mexico. The Gray whales give birth to calves and nurse them there for a few months until they are ready to make the return journey back to Alaska in the summer.

The America Cetacean Society reports seeing Gray whales and calves passing by southern California on their way down to Mexico. Usually the calves are born in the lagoons in Baja but it seems some whales have already given birth along the way. This is good news because it will give the calves more time to nurse and get stronger for their grueling return journey.

The action is generally good and I have taken some great photos in this area but wildlife encounters is always unpredictable. I will try and keep in touch and post some shots when possible. In the meantime, you can visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see plenty of whale shots from my previous trips.

Canon First Among Japanese Companies In Patents

For the eighth year in a row, Canon ranks first among Japanese companies in terms of patents filed in the USA. In 2005, Canon filed 1,825 patents (2nd in the world). And the patent filings continue to grow till the end of 2012, when Canon was awarded 3,174 patents.  It is important to note not all patents turn into a product or product improvement. In fact, most patents end up nowhere other than protecting the company's intellectual property rights but it does show Canon is committed to heavy R&D to keep their technology one step ahead of the competition.

Canon Experience Stores Coming

Add caption

Canon Japan has decided to take the next step in marketing and customer experience by opening Canon Experience Stores. The stores will be open around the world, eventually, but will start in North America first, apparently. The official announcement may come next week.

This is not a unique concept in consumer photography or marketing. Leica, Apple, Sony, etc. all have stores featuring their own products. Canon's stores will give the customers a hands-on experience, replete with dazzling HD computer screens and audio visual displays. This is an expensive approach to marketing and may hold the imagination of customers for a little while if Canon showcases some truly state-of-the-art concept equipment. Ultimately, a company must consistently produce high quality and advanced products to keep the loyalty of its customers in the long run.

Canon EOS-1D C Camera Revealed

Canon EOS-1D C hybrid camera

The EOS-1D C camera is the first Canon hybrid DSLR to offer onboard 4K motion imaging and full HD motion imaging on CF cards. It comes with the compact EF mount lenses and facilitates 4K image origination in the tightest and most challenging environments. With onboard 4K recording at 24p or HD recording at a range of frame rates up to 60p, and Clean HD via HDMI, the EOS-1D C offers additional capabilities to filmmakers and TV production teams as well as specialty image acquisition applications.

This camera features an 18.1-megapixel full frame CMOS sensor with a wide range of image acquisition options, including 4K (4096 x 2160), HD (1920 x 1080); or 18-megapixel (5184 x 3456) still images. The 4K is recorded as Motion JPEG; the HD is recorded as H.264; and the still images are recorded as RAW or JPEG. It is essentially the same camera as the EOS-1D X minus the 4K video functions and a few other cinematic features. The 1D C has a more robust heat sink to allow for better cooling of the circuitry during video operations. The two cameras share many of the Firmware codes except on the 1D X, some features and functions are 'disabled'.

So why does the EOS-1D C lists for $11,999 and the EOS-1D X lists for $6,799? In one word, scarcity. Canon knows there will be limited demand for the EOS-1D C hybrid camera so they limit it to a smaller production run. The development costs of the specialized software codes for the EOS-1D C are spread out over a smaller number of cameras as well. Therefore, the list price is much higher than the EOS-1D X. For those who are interested, you can download the Instruction Manual and take a good look at the camera's features and functions.

Sigma Launches 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM

Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM lens

Generally, large aperture lens like the 300mm f/2.8 have been loved by professional users due to their brilliant capacity of depiction and bright aperture value. It is one of the essential focal lengths in the world of professional photography. Based on the concept that turning a 300mm f/2.8 lens into a zoom lens would enable photographers to further expand the scope of shooting, Sigma has introduced their 120-300mm f/2.8 lens and announced it during the CES in Las Vegas.

Canon has taken this concept even further, and about two years ago, announced the development of their EF 200-400mm f/4L IS + 1.4X lens, with a built-in extender. This lens should be officially released some time in the first quarter of 2013. The Consumer Electronic Show is going on right now but Canon seems to be holding back their major new product introductions for now. There is a Camera and Photo Imaging show coming up at the end of January in Japan and the Focus On Imaging show will take place in the UK in March. The photography world is eagerly waiting for some major launch events from Canon soon. Take a look at my earlier post on the Canon EF 200-400mm lens here.

With a sleek and distinct design, the PowerShot N measures 3.09 x 2.37 x 1.15 inches, making it ideal for quick on-the-go shooting. The camera’s 28mm wide-angle 8x optical zoom lens and shutter are both operated on the camera’s dual-ring lens. In addition, the PowerShot N offers a new ECO Mode, a feature that provides approximately 30 percent longer battery life when enabled, by dimming the screen and eventually shutting off the display after the device has been idle for 10 seconds, allowing users to shoot more and for longer. Adding to its portability and convenience, the camera features USB charging through a computer or traditional charging by the AC adaptor, allowing users to power-up from virtually anywhere.

Canon EOS-M Sensor Rating By DxOMark

Canon EOS-M line of mirrorless cameras

DxOMark has released their sensor score on the Canon EOS-M mirrorless camera. It is rated slightly higher than the Rebel T4i/D650 but lower than the Olympus OM-D and Sony NEX-6 cameras.

Frankly, I pay little attention to these laboratory ratings, replete with charts and graphs but I bring it to my readers' attention for those who want to know. My rating for any camera is out in the field, on a photo shoot. I make my judgement on the equipment from how they perform and hold up there.

Canon EOS-6D vs. EOS-5D MK III Analysis

Canon EOS-6D with EF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens

Canon EOS-5D MK III with EF 50mm f/1.2L lens

Read my latest post on the Guide to Canon's best DSLR cameras

An interesting video comparison of the EOS-6D vs. EOS-5D MK III cameras. A bit long but worth a look. For my money, the choice is simple, I will choose the 5D over the 6D, independent of price. If it is a price dependent choice, I will buy a clean, refurbished or slightly used 5D MK III from the Canon Store or a third party.

The EOS-5D has been my pick for the best value in full frame DSLR camera today. It is an overall better camera than the EOS-6D, its newer, younger brother. Save up your money and buy the EOS-5D MK III, especially when the new Firmware comes out in April 2013. It will further enhanced the features and functions of the camera, including AF down to f/8. Up to then, only the professional EOS-1D bodies have that capability. Canon is giving away the store by putting so many goodies in the EOS-5D MK III body.

The EOS-6D is not a bad camera but is designed to be an entry level, full frame body so Canon has to withhold features to keep the price down. The EOS-5D MK III is designed to be a semi-pro camera and Canon has priced the camera too aggressively low. If one looks around on eBay and acts fast, one can buy a new MK III for about $2,800 vs. about $1,900 for the EOS-6D.

Visit my website MichaelDanielHo.com to see photos taken by the two cameras.
