Canon New Firmware Incompatible With 3rd Party Batteries

Canon LC-E4N charger and LP-E4N battery for the EOS-1D X camera

Last month, I have reported generally third party batteries do not last as long as Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) ones. See earlier post here.

Now some users have discovered both Canon and Nikon have built in incompatibility in their latest Firmwares, making third party batteries unusable. In the past, I have purchased high quality third party batteries and saved maybe 25% or so. Frankly, the cost savings is not worth the hassle and risk and I will never use third party batteries when I am on a photo shoot.

I have bought all Canon factory batteries because as a professional wildlife photographer going on frequent foreign trips, batteries and memory cards are so critical to a successful shoot. Extremely cold weather can affect the performance of batteries. When I was in the sub and high Arctic photographing wildlife in -20+ degrees Fahrenheit temperature, I discovered the LP-E4N battery in my Canon EOS-1D X came through with flying colors. My readers know I have been a Travel and Wildlife photographer using Canon equipment for 25 years. You can see my works on MichaelDanielHo.com
