Wildlife Photography - Humpback Whales in Maui, Day 7

Humpback whale with bloodied tubercles suffered from fighting

A beautiful tail for all seasons

Somewhere over the rainbow Humpbacks fly

Came across a competition pod that fought or an extended period of time. The male Humpbacks are fighting to mate with one single female. The battle was long and the combatant above had bleeding tubercles. The fight lasted for about an hour and involved about 8 whales. After the female selects the winner, the former combatants will cease hostility and may even frolic with each other, if they still have energy left in them.
