Wildlife Photography - Humpback Whales in Maui, Day 2

Humpback Calf with a big Aloha smile

Humpback whale making a BIG splash

Highway 30 is the coastal road that leads to the town of Lahaina, the 'Humpback whale capital of the world' is about a 45 minute drive from the airport. On the way there I was already greeted by at least 6 Humpback breaches in the distance but I had to keep my eye on the road.

This town really appeals to me. It is the essence of the Hawaiian way of life and spirit. The past few years I have made friends with this 'one man band' musician who performs in the local hangouts. He plays all the oldies and I have a blast seeing him in action while eating a meal and having some drinks after a hard day on the water.  You might say, 'I always have a whale of a time in Laihana.'

Saw quite a few threesome - mother, calf and a single male escort. No big comp pods so far. Missed a mother and calf double breaching - too far. No 'killer sightings' or brilliant breachings but the photo shoot has just started.
